I left a post last week asking if I could use sports tape. It didn't work and it got horribly stuck. I just wanted to let you know that I soaked those stuck bandages for several minutes in olive oil and both slid off perfectly. Thank God! So if anyone like myself uses the wrong tape in a pinch, please try the oil on those delicate little baby legs. 😊

Oh wow, I used Walmart’s “equate” brand of “Self-Adhering Sports Wrap” on my chick 7 weeks ago, and she’s a feather-legged Marans but didn’t have any trouble with the wrap getting stuck together or pulling on her feathers. Maybe my adhesive was just a little less sticky because it’s Walmart brand 😂

Just hatched a SLC... EASY FIX!!! Take 2 bands (the little ones used on braces for teeth). Loop one through the other and make a real small pair of handcuffs. Slide one over one claw and the other over the other claw. Super easy, they can move and the results are almost instant. Just replace if they break etc.

I thought just weakness initially but it's able to eat and drink if I hand feed it - it doesn't seem lethargic, just can't use it's legs. Do you think I can treat it for splayed legs and keep it with it's mum and siblings? I don't want to put it in a brooder box alone 😢 and don't want to take a healthy baby away from mum for company either

We haven’t had chicks for many years and we never had or heard of spraddle legs or curled toes. We just got RI Reds and Dominiques. One Red had a spraddled leg and curled toes. Our vet wrap was old so we used a pipe cleaner. HOWEVER, the vet wrap Is a clear Winner. Sooo much easier as Reds are so tiny. Today I fashioned the smallest sandal and used medical clear tape to first get toes on thin cardboard sandal platform and used skinny strips of med tape to lightly wrap around cardboard and foot. Poor thing, as I straightened it the chick calmed down as though I took the pain away. I then took less than 1/4” wide strip of vet bandage and loosely looped around one leg below knee and then the other and pinch loop in middle. It was so much better than pipe cleaner. The inside toe on good leg tends to just overlap onto sandal at times, but I’m sure with each passing day the chick (Miss Penny) will get stronger. She immediately at least started to stand a bit on the bad leg. After we took off pipe cleaner hobble we did see a definite change in control of that leg with staying more inline. All I know is I’ve never had this problem with past chickens, but with all the helpful KZbin videos and the fact she has a healthy appetite and drinking I’m optimistic she will be fine. I play classical music on low and sometimes nature sounds. I was concerned she couldn’t see at night so I put a distant nite light on so she could see water and food. I do check on her frequently to make sure she isn’t tipped over and I gently put her next to water and feed every check-no more than 2 hours apart as it’s vital they don’t dehydrate and they need those added electrolytes and vitamins in the water. Do make sure there are none edible pebbles in drinking water so they don’t drown as tiny birds are not very agile no matter how light weight you rig them up. Using a temperature controlled seed heating mat and about a 14” box so she has room and paper towel on bottom with no lumps to get caught on and doesn’t need to go far for food and water. She chirps a good portion of the day and is a happier chirp since toes were taped down. 🥰

we have eggs that hatched in an incubator a few days ago, and i am worried that they are too cold. Is it a good option to fill a warm water bottle and put it in the brooder(we're just using a cardboard box for that)? I live in an apartment so we don't have that much resources that a farm might have for baby chicks. Also, what is going on if one of the baby chicks' feet is sort of twisted and turned towards the inside? How should that be treated? Thank you so much!
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Hello do you have a heat lamp or a radiant brooding plate? If not you must hurry and grab one, newborn chicks need heat at 90-95F or they could perish. The warm water bottle or a heat mat could work temporarily but not a long term solution. Thier brooder box should be large enough that they can be under the heat but walk away and escape it when they need to drink water and eat food. So the water doesn’t warm up. Also watch out for pasty butt when poop gets stuck in their bottoms, it needs to be cleaned off if it occurs so it doesn’t block them up and they can poop. For the foot, you can make a cast to keep toes straight with a bandaid. Or make shoes with a pipe cleaner and wrap vetwrap around gently not too tight. If circulation gets cut off that would be bad and the toes could die. A riboflavin vitamin B complex would help the baby’s legs. A good poultry vitamin supplement in their water. We are coming out with a video shortly on a full comprehensive guide to raising baby chicks all the way to their first egg as full grown laying hens, stay tuned. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

@@BockBockBouquet Thank you so much for your quick reply! two of the chicks were very droopy and lethargic, and I thought they were too cold so we quickly filled a hot-water-bottle and put it in the brooder. They piled on top of that and we covered their bodies with a soft towel. After I fed them a little water and egg yolk they are now much better and very lively. The box is very big and they have space to go if they get enough of the heat. How long do they need a heat lamp or a radiant brooding plate for? If they can manage with a hot water bottle as a heat source before not needing one, I won't buy a brooding plate... Is it fine just feeding them millet? I'm sorry for all the tedious questions, and once again, thank you so much!! looking forward to your videos!
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
@@yanejz248 the easiest option would be to go get a red heat lamp, they are very affordable. They will ween off it by slowly keep increasing the distance between them and the lamp, but they need to be in 85F next week and by 3-4 weeks old they will be able to handle room temperature in 75F. The egg yolk is very good for them, that will give them a boost. The millet is a treat but they need more protein. Get some chick starter mash or crumbles and that will be their main feed until they are 8 weeks old and can switch to chick grower feed. Once egg laying age they will be fed layer feed

I've got a chick who came from a hatchery through the mail and I noticed that it couldn't stand on one leg. It didn't look exactly like splayed leg, but almost like a knee problem. After some research I found tendon dislocation problems and thought that might be it, but couldn't verify it. So, it's been a week now and after about 4 days of splayed leg treatment, the chick can stand, but is still very unsteady and something still doesn't look right with one leg. So, how long should this splayed leg treatment last and what else might be going on?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
You could be right, is it at the hock/knee or more near the hip area where the leg meets the body? They may be a special needs chicken that could live a relatively normal life. If the chick you think is in pain and won’t recover use your best judgment on what you think is the best call. It’s hard to make these judgements when it’s hard to find an avian vet. We can only do our best with research. If it was splayed leg I would hope you would see better results by now. Sorry for what your going through and hope your poor little one is okay
@davidgood8402 жыл бұрын
@@BockBockBouquet I really can't tell. I took the hobble off for several days, and the symptoms looked a lot like splayed leg, so I got some active wrap and tried again. From what I can tell, there is just some kind of instability in her legs. She can stand, but frequently looks to lose strength and balance and then flails around steadying herself with a wing. She is eating and drinking and I don't think she's in pain, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How long after hatch have they been in the incubator? If fully dried up and after 24 hours I would move them to the brooder and start with treatment immediately. Make sure you take the time to make sure you can right it if it falls on its back. Help guide it along to walking. Start with the brace wide and then after they have mastered that redo the brace with legs closer together. Take baby steps I should say. They hobble at first but quickly get their footing
@Amber-792 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen a lot of homestead channels where they have babies with this issue and I never understand why they don’t create this brace for them, and they all end up dying because they aren’t able to get around to get water and food and are even picked on to death from the other larger birds. I’ve even seen moms throw them out of their box.

Have you ever experienced a chick with Wry neck?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Yes the mother passes the deficiency onto the chick, the chick needs to be separated in their own brooder so they do not get trampled. It is easily curable though. They need to be on Vitamin E as the main cure but also Selenium because they need that mineral to absorb the Vitamin E. It can reverse quickly or in other cases take a few weeks just don’t give up on them. Keep them on treatment a few weeks after improving and before stopping treatment. Make sure you are gentle with them and assist them when needed. Don’t ever try to force their head to normal. It is scary to see a chicken like this but it is just a symptom of the deficiency and once corrected can lead a normal happy life. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. They have chicken supplements sold or you can use ones for humans at the local pharmacy
