Riding my motorcycle and touring the world is my plan for retirement. In this video I talk about some options for riding my motorcycle during retirement. Will I be able to spend most of my time touring during retirement and live the motorcycle dream. Motorcycle trailer, Toy Hauler, Camper are all options. My plans and thoughts need some help. Got to say I was fortunate to have sold my business in 1997, at the old age of 46. Picked up my first bike in 1998, softail custom. As the years progressed and my bike got bigger, in 2004 I took a road trip with two friends, on my new Electra Glide Classic. We did 6 weeks from the state of Maryland to San Francisco, with numerous side trips along the way…up the pacific coast into Canada and back into Montana. Again with numerous side trips exploring. We did 11,000 miles on that adventure. Do it as soon as you can. Your health can change overnight and squash your dreams in an instance. I like to say…”Don’t stop. Keep moving.”

I've been retired for the last 6 year's and my wife just retired this past June, we have tossed the idea of a toy hauler and a travel trailer, and a diesel pusher for the past 10 year's now, but we have figured out what we really wanted to do, so this past October we drove up to Wisconsin and bought a RV to pull behind our Tri Glide, so no more tent camping or hotel's expense for us anymore lol, air mattresses that go flat in the middle of the night and no more wet sleeping bag's lol, I do have a video of it that will be released about 5pm today, great topic brother, 💯

From a financial standpoint, I haven't been able to retire when I had planned. A few sad and very unfortunate life events have kept me from retirement in as much as I'd love to retire at now 64. When asked when I'll retire, my response is usually...I'll probably work till lunch time on the day of my funeral, lol No shame in trailering your bike. The ones that usually make those snide remarks about not being a real biker if you don't ride are usually the "Wannabe Badass Biker" types, that are fair weather weekend warrior types. Like you mentioned, there are many a reason that some trailer there bikes, especially long distances. I have ridden bikes all my life, LITERALLY". My late wife wasn't able to ride long distance but loved to ride with me. I would trailer my bike to rallies and different events so we could both enjoy the time riding and being with each other at different places we've never been before. I had thought of selling my bike because medical expenses were difficult to handle. She got mad at me for thinking about it. She said, the bike was hers too and I can't sell it without her permission, which she wasn't giving to me. She said she wanted to ride with whatever time she had left. Ride like we did when we first met as teenagers. Twenty years since her passing, I still have HER bike.....doubtful she will give me permission to sell it, but I would never now!!

At 61, I've found myself in a spot where I can go after it now. I just retired, my wife passed from breast cancer a few years ago and our only son is off to college. I have 23-foot toy hauler that my kid and I have used to haul dirt bikes, quads etc. but I don't think I'm going to use it much because.... once the expense of hauler and unit is done, gas mileage is terrible, set up and down is a pain, they lose value faster than a speeding bullet, you have to store and winterize it ( G.R. Michigan), and on and on. I figure the expense of these things would be more than a nice hotel/motel, with no hassles. I have an "11 Blackline FXR now but thinking ultra-limited this spring for retirement touring. Nice work BoDean

Retirement takes a lot of planning. I am still working for a couple more years because I signed a contract. Mrs Geezer has some good investments so we plan on eventually getting an RV to tow the Road Glide. I will probably still do something as a consultant when I'm fully retired. Great video & talking points. I am retired for 6 years now & approaching 70. I have been riding motorcycles since '70 & love it. When you retire, keep yourself busy & stay in decent shape. I ride a '16 FLHTK & have ridden all over the country & bike suspension is key. I looked at toy haulers & decided that they are mass produced junk & a money pit. I know people that have issues with them & dealer support sucks after the sale. When I travel I stay in hotels or rent a place. It's cheaper in the long run than headaches with an RV. Plus you don't have to put up with obnoxious, noisy, drunken neighbors in cramped RV slots. Trailering a bike is a logical solution & makes sense for various reasons. Retirement is great & it has given me pure joy & relaxation. I can go where I desire. I used to live in MI & enjoyed it but not the winter. I live in S. Ga. now & can ride year around. Love it! I enjoy your vids & just wanted to share my thoughts. Ride safe!

I like to travel dry hate when I have rainy long day trips and then have to stay in a motel room only to travel and or hope for no rain the next day been there done that for many years of riding and now that I am older nope!!! Wow. I could use this entire conversation myself!! With the exception of when we're planning on retiring, I have gone through every bit of this, verbatim! I love the idea of riding everywhere, and on trips I take without Mrs. Motoramblings, I will, but, I think we'd both be happier in the long run if we bring the bike on longer trips. We used to camp in travel trailers, and it was a good way to save money when traveling with the kid. We sold the last when Mitchell stopped going with us. The tough part for me is deciding which way to go. Toy hauler, Class A with a trailer, I've even seriously considered pulling a camper with the bike. I do believe a Toy Hauler is in my future, but I'm not committing until I know exactly how the finances, and Mrs. Motoramblings are going to be when I'm done working. I plan on retiring spring of 23, I'll let you know how it goes! (I'm 55 now, with nearly 35 years in the P.O.)

I did the countdown thing myself and got an app for my phone. Unfortunately, I had 99 working days till I retired and then "The Burn" came.😒 When all of this is said and done, I've been looking at a 6X12 enclosed trailer to haul the Spyder and it will be easy to pull the trailer with my 2015 Ford F-150. It has a towing package included. (Has a trailer brake connection) It will serve a duel purpose. I can drive the Spyder in it for storage and shelter. I hope I will be able to get "Miss Sallyann" on the road maybe late January or Early February.

I had purchased a new Ford F-250 in 16, and that was going to be “All the truck I’ll ever need.” Until my wife fell in love with the XLR, at 16,000 pounds dry, it required the 401K to take a serious hit. I’m fixing to retire in March. As of staying busy, well we’ll see how much my beautiful wife has me to do. We are building a shop now to work on bikes. Light work nothing heavy ( not motor rebuild ). As of toy hauler, I had one I’ll never do that again. Once you get somewhere ( most places) you have to back into your spot. Now your bike stays out for all to see. Side note In El Paso I had to protect my bike with force, because it was out and I couldn’t get it in the trailer. To pull the trailer with any efficiency I had to buy a diesel truck $$$. I killed 2 gas engine trucks. so it’s a lot to think about. Today’s (epa ), Diesel engines are a no no.

I did shop for a trailer and by the time you upgrade the truck I have the F150 also get the right size truck F250 minimum an a mid size toy hauler you are looking at 160 Gs plus the Add on’s there is equipment necessary to use it ie hook ups cables hoses generator solar panel’s. Plus the costs of traveling fuel food camp sites. Something else is health care it needs to cover you where ever you travel like going out of state or even south into Mexico. I understand why some people might trailer their bikes. The only time it really just drives me nuts is when they are younger, healthy, trailer it everywhere, and then act like a badass when they ride it 15 miles, from the trailer park they're camping at, into town and try to give the impression they rode it all the way. That one drives me up a wall....without a trailer. Hahahaha. Brother, if I were rich I would indeed travel all over the world on a bike. When I got to a different country, I would buy a new ride and then find someone that it would really make a huge difference in their life, and give it to them when I left. Y'all be safe.

Bob, I just retired Nov 1 at 57 years old. Last day of work mid-July. Rode my Road Glide Limited to OK then WI then CO and back home to FL. 19 States over 5K miles. I have been looking at toy haulers for a year and still have no idea for a Class C (like the Thor) or a fifth wheel (would have to buy a truck) or trailer. Just not sure

Very interesting because I am in the same boat. I will retire / retire for good in 4 or 5 years. Haven’t pegged a date yet like you but I am ready. A lot of things to consider. Do I keep the house here in Michigan or sell it and move. I have nothing to keep me in Michigan at all. I’m here just for the job. A good friend of mine was a professional motorcycle rider for HD years ago. She raced flat track for them. Years ago the Air For e hired her to be a MSF instructor on Okinawa. That’s where I meet her. Her and her husband both ride. They sold their house and bought an RV / Bus and they trailer their bikes around. They chase the seasons. They have no hard address. Right now they are in Arizona, they left Florida a couple months ago. In May or June they’ll be in St Claire MI. They pick up side jobs in the rv parks they stay at to put some change in their pockets. Once the get the rv set up they are off on their bikes. Another option here in Michigan that a lot of folks do is the snow birding. I’m not really a fan of this but I don’t own the house here. A bunch of my friends from the Legion here do this. Right after Christmas, here with their families, they take off for Florida and don’t come back till April. Of course they trailer their bikes there then ride in Florida. A lot of things to think about for sure. Check out Bob & Tam’s Excellent Adventure KZbin. They are full time trailer campers. Another good one is We’re the Russos, they are full time RV / trailer campers. It’s a thing now it seems.

Thanks my friend and I actually do watch their channel. Are used to think the Snowbird thing was for old people until I got older and realize that’s genius. We have actually talked about getting a place in the Carolinas as a second home but think we may just end up renting a place for like a month or two at a time in different places.

Long story short I got financially ruined and was forced to early retire at 62. Being retired and poor is no fun. So I say plan plan plan and set aside some funds for emergencies and other unexpected's. But setbacks are NOT going to stop me. I had worked since I was 8 years old so I enjoy not being busy. I pick my spots and I go ride. Also I volunteer for the Patriot Guard. If you or your followers are not familiar with them I plead with everyone to check them out and volunteer if you can. Thanks for posting and take care.

Been retired for a decade now, and I struggled with the exact same things you are going through. Ultimately we decided against the toy hauler route and bought a nice luxurious fifth wheel moderately sized so we could comfortably camp at state parks, which is what we like to do. We're not into the big fancy luxurious expensive glamping resorts. You might as well Airbnb it then. I guess I'm of the mind also that when I camp, I want to camp, and when I ride, I want to ride. Making the decision a little easier for me is the fact that my wife does not ride and we have dogs. And I'm like, what am I going to do leave my wife and dogs at the campsite while I go out on the bike? So yes, I have been very busy in retirement. And there are things that keep me from traveling more, such as taking care of elderly parents, having many pets, and having to do all the maintenance and repairs on my home and equipment due to limited income in retirement. I love retirement but it's not all fun and games. Everybody's situation is a little different though.

We like you have a dog that’s at the end of its life but thinking about getting another one that we could actually travel with us. I’m 63 and I’ve been retired almost 3 years now and it’s pretty awesome! I stay pretty busy, I have a second older home that I have been rehabbing, I work on it about 2 days per week. Have learned a lot of new skills and always have an excuse to buy more tools! Always stuff to do around my primary house. Like to fish, golf, hike, bicycle, in addition to riding my motorcycle. I say the same thing…. Don’t know how I ever had time to work! Nothing wrong with trailering. I’m thinking of spending a week or so riding the Black Hills next summer (NOT during Sturgis) and I’ll definitely be trailering. Got my “ride across South Dakota in the blazing heat of summer” merit badge many times over the years. Nothing left to prove, so if I go it will be in air conditioned comfort with my bike it tow! My wife and I aren’t big travelers, we are blessed to have a nice house right on a small lake. We figure a lot of people travel and spend considerable money to vacation in a place like we live in every day….

I have a toy hauler and good luck finding a motorcycle friendly campground. I pull a 28 ‘ with a 1500. I had a 3500 GMC with camper, then went to a 2500 with camper, and now to 1500 with small toy hauler. If your thinking about doing it don’t do it with a 1500 and compatible trailer. Diesel truck and what you can afford camper if you plan on extensive travel. I retired from the military and life sure is boring sometimes. Trying to stay busy is the hardest thing and staying healthy is the next hardest thing. Golden years? 😂 The drs get the gold. 😂 Good luck. Oh and by the way, what headsets do you and your wife use? I can’t find a single headset with good customer reviews.

Great advice and I agree, always been a F150 guy and when I switched over to the 1500, I was surprised at the ability to tow. I love the truck though so it stays. We use SENA devices for communication and have used them for years, love them. I use a Sena 10cPro for audio (both with wife and for videos) and she has a Sena 20s. Some people like others but these have been gold to me. Good luck and thank you for your service!

There is a ton to consider when purchasing a trailer for travel. It all weighs heavily on the capability of your truck. I was going to do the same thing. Now I’m looking at travel tent trailers to pull behind the bike. I’m single so I just need to please me. You however have the Mrs. if you go that route step up into at minimum a 3/4 ton. Or if need be a 1 ton single rear wheel. Stick with gas engines. The trucks are much cheaper. Good luck in your search.

Unfortunately I’m out for a bit because I was hit by a drunk driver on August 20th and my bike was destroyed but I plan on being able to ride one way or another by the spring time. We both love it too much from the riding aspect as well as the community and events that we would attend to just give it up because of the person who hit me bad decisions. Also, we like being the young ones at events because by the time we hit retirement we’ll have close to 80 years of riding experience between the both of us which sounds really cool to me.

Hi Bob… good seeing you yesterday on Coffee with HDR. As for me, I was fortunate in my career to receive an early retirement package on May 15th 2018. I was a 58 year old IT Executive for a Fortune 10 company. However after several months of retirement, I found that I was not mentally prepared from going full blast in my career, putting out fires 60 hours a week, to just laying around and getting fat, so I went back to work full-time, although I was only looking for part-time work at the time. The upside is that I am doing work that I love and there is ZERO stress as I am a non-manager now. And it’s really nice to work by choice and not by necessity. Having said all this, I will 62 in July and will most likely call it quits. Life is too short for sure! The GoldWing I just purchased is part of my overall retirement planning and I do plan on exploring this beautiful country that we’re lucky to live in. Best wishes with your decisions. (Rob)

All very good ideas. I feel the best way to see the country after you retire is to just buy a camper that you pull with your motorcycle and hit the open road? And I hope you know that even having a toy hauler is CAMPING? Yes, you will be out in a dirty campground someplace and dumping your flash tanks. We had a 25' trailer we pulled when the kids were little and you were talking about space in the camper. IN reality, you are really not inside much when you camp you will be at the pool or sitting by the campfire. My retirement I feel will be working on my home and watching Bob and Donna videos as they travel and bring us some amazing content. You can call them His and Her's 10 Wheels. Ride Safe
