I am an EMT and a granddaughter of an alcoholic who underwent such bad alcohol withdrawals that he had very bad hallucinations and was very sick. I am disgusted and enraged by how these EMTs treated this patient. There were no attempts to try and assess or help him and there is really no situation that you would ever put a patient especially a pt who has a high likelihood of aspiration (like a withdrawal patient) in prone position. I also don't think that he needed to be in restraints at all. This terrible situation really displays how health care workers' predisposed biases harm and kill patients. We need to really talk more about the presence of racial biases in medicine and how we treat addicts.

This is quite horrifying. As a nursing student, I have learned what alcohol withdrawal symptoms entails and it can be very dangerous going through it alone. To think that poor man was trying to better his life and when was so vulnerable in that moment and how he was treated by those vile paramedics truly breaks my heart. I believe the police officers should also be charged, standing there laughing and being bystanders.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me, except that clearly I lived. I was on the 3rd floor and couldn't walk, so refusing to carry me, they cursed me while dragging me down the stairs. Thank goodness for my neighbors who tried to prevent me from rolling downward. Believe it or not, the hospital staff was even worse. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life and gives me great comfort to see these individuals charged accordingly. This also makes me see that this probably happens way more than we think.

This is nothing out of the ordinary. This is exactly how Emergency Medical Responders always treat black people. You should've heard how a female EMS worker yelled at my wife when she was going into labor. She yelled, _"We are not toting your butt out to the ambulance! You can get up and walk out there yourself!"_ I even remember when I cut my arm after a road accident. An EMS guy handed me a few band-aids and said, _"You can put these on yourself, because I don't want to touch you."_

That's some cold blooded shit right there!! That EMT woman didn't have a tiny shred of empathy or compassion in her voice what so ever. She acted like it wasn't part of her job to get the man needing help into the ambulance. Apparently if the poor guy wasn't gonna get up and walk out to it he was just shit out of luck, because she was "not in the mood for this shit". The man was obliviously having some issues and needed medical help. I personally hope they make an example out of them for being so uncaring and then they strap the man down in a position that most anyone would know is wrong. IMO if you choose a career that centers around taking care of people that are mentally and/or physically ill, then you should probably have a little compassion and some plain old common decency for others.

how can you in any way, shape, or form, put ANYONE as an EMT, EMS FACEDOWN on a stretcher??? I have 0 basic training and unless it was 100% necessary due to something I knew would do more harm than good, its common damn sense to put someone on their back. Those workers had annoyance, disregard, frustration in their hearts and minds when they did this, even if just slightly, that persons life wasn't their #1 priority and it shows, they 100% better get some decent time for this, idc about the dead mans past, no one deserves to die like that.
