UPDATE! I'M NOW OFFERING CONSULTS AND FULL STYLE ANALYSIS REPORTS!
Click here to book your analysis! www.elyssaaesthetic.com/servi...
Hey guys......this one was a true labor of love!!! I know it's long, but I just had to include as much info as possible!! I hope that this gives you some more insight into the archetype system that we all know and love! And if you're new here, I hope that this video opens your mind to the possibilities of exploring personal style. And I'm so curious to see what archetype and system you most identify with after watching this video!!
In this video I take a deep dive into the history of the main body types / style archetypes (Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Romantic, Gamine and Ingenue). I feel like there's so much more to the style archetypes than what's currently be discussed and we owe it to keep the founders relevant and highlight who's currently carrying on the methodology.

UPDATE! I'M NOW OFFERING CONSULTS AND FULL STYLE ANALYSIS REPORTS! These are not "Kibbe" style analyses, rather a completely personalized evaluation of your body yin/yang balance and essence. So I still use familiar terms such as Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Romantic, Gamine and Ingenue.....but my evaluations are 100% custom; they are not designed to assign you an archetype, rather offer you a clear outline of your unique characteristics and total balance. CLICK HERE for more info! www.elyssaaesthetic.com/services/

Elyssa, this is a treasure trove of information! I've been studying Kibbe body types for about a year and you're the first KZbinr I've found who has covered McJimsey and Northrop. Thank you for educating us about these amazing female pioneers of fashion and style. All your hard work and research really shows in your presentations and I'm so looking forward to more!

I believe Merriam Style has mentioned them, but hasn't gotten into the details. I agree though, I'm happy about this video and how it presents the history of the body type/essence/image ID idea, not just the latest contributers to the idea/system.

i like that romantic and classic were paired as intermediate by McJimsey because i feel i have both characteristics, but Kibbe’s spectrum made that feel unlikely, so i’ve been super confused. haha laughing a bit about Jared Leto and “The Daring Pirate Angel”

Thank you for making this informational and understandable. I've seen others talking about Kibbe, and thought, finally a realistic approach. Then went on to the Kibbe page and was like: This is nothing of the things I heard about his work so far. A little frustrated because I still couldn't figure out what I was. But then I went back to the Pears and Apples, and the easiest is basicaly, when you don't let others dictate you how you are supposed to look. For example: I have a thick neck and need a v neck or a shawl optic around my neck or else I look like swollen. Then I have wide shoulders, that means, no tank tops or they look even wider - and definately no frills! All that stuff. The easiest way is to google exactly for your needs: How to dress big hips, how to dress short legs, how to dress small chest, how to dress small waist, etc. And than puzzle all the information together and make it your own style.

Wow just found you today your attention to detail is inspiring. Taking this all in likely will reach out for personal services when I’m clear on my goal aka “why”. At 62 my style has evolved by workplace needs and body changes not having a waist anymore has been quite a style adjustment but in hindsight a good growth opportunity.

I'd just like to say that although we may be the star of our own life in our POV, so is every other person. Most people are only thinking of themselves. This is a good thing. You don't have to worry so much about what other people think. But also I think it's bad to think this way and get too caught up in your own personal image... You should have fun with this stuff. No pressure :)

Wow I really needed this today! I was very frustrated, I was kind of bullied for saying that I could probably be TR and after that I started thinking " he's just one person why should I take his ideas to 100% ? " Kibbe method has certainly helped me to understand my lines but I don't fit in any of his boxes 😅 I consider myself as a longer TR which kind of sounds like McJimsey's Romantic. I was feeling pretty bad because he seems to be very strict when it comes to height. I'm 5'7, I don't really have the SD/D bone structure so I can't really pull off the structure, the sharpness.. R lines fit me nicely, ankle lenght jeans are actually flattering and dont cut my linea, at the same time I can still work with some length specially if the fabric isn't too heavy. I'm very delicate, even my voice is yin so I really can't wait to watch more of your videos about the other methods ! I feel more included 😊

I cannot begin to express how happy I am for you!!! It sounds like you know what works for you and are now able to make nuanced modifications as you continue your style journey!!!! That’s what it’s all about imo 💛💛 And I actually really love McJimsey’s spectrum of yin/yang and it makes total sense that Romantic is more central. I’m so excited that you feel included 💕 We’re all so a unique mixture of yin/yang that it’s best to just start with identifying yin/yang and move forward from there😉 Baby steps towards a well curated personal style!

Wow, you're amazing! I love the way you gathered together all the systems and then gave your clear personal interpretation of all of them. I've been into these body typologies for the past couple of years and you still showed me some new takes on them! I'm going to be coming back to your channel often :). Totally made my day with this video. Thank you! Btw, to answer your question, I mostly relate to Dramatic, Natural and Gamine essences in most systems. I'm definitely a yang person in build, I have length and width (that's what Kibbe said based on my photos) but I feel my inner essence, or personality, is closer to a Gamine as I'm neither poised and dignified, nor very open and expressive, but rather inviting and mercurial, for a lack of a better word. It's an interesting vibe to dress for sure :D. I'm having a bit of trouble getting it right now that I'm in my 30s. Exploring all these different systems has been a huge help and a huge maze at the same time, but I love every moment of it :).

Loved loved loved this video. So interesting! I look forward to your future videos! I went to Rachel's website and I finally feel like I found my perfect fit in her system where I would be "natural classic". From the Kibbe system I have always felt like I'm a classic (I've also done the test where I mostly answer C to everything), but didn't know exactly which one. However sometimes some of the classic examples feel a bit too stiff for me, just slightly. Not all of them though. But Rachel's view on "natural classic" describes perfectly the types of clothes I feel the best in: "The Natural Classic woman's best look is expensive and polished, but also relaxed and comfortable." and can be shortly be defined as "Casual elegance".

Wow, just WOW! How incredible you are doing this for us all ladies! Thank you so, so much Elyssa! This is really a MASTERPIECE! I love every think about this knowledge of style types. I also didn't know that Kibbe wasn't the first one, but he's the one that do this in the "modern" time (would love to know, if someone will write a book about this in 21st century ;-)). And that's both cool and good to know. It's important to acknowledge all of these people, especially the lady Northrop. I actually did a style type with Rachel. She nailed it! I bought other course also, such as finding the perfume and make-up, but most of them are quite outdated. Because many of the products didn't exists anymore, half of the perfume in my charged were discontinued.. and the make-up were off, for example: she wrote many time about a color in a palette... if you buy a palette, you should be able to use all of them, not just one. And this was many time in the color charge. The lipsticks were good though. I have a question for you my dear; I came up as a mix, 3 mixes to be exact. Which is 50% classic - 30% dramatic and 20% natural. It's actually perfect for me. I sent her an e-mail and asked some questions after the analyst, but she never replied me... so the aftercare are non existed. So I hope you could help me. Am I a dramatic classic with a little bit of natural OR a classic with more of dramatic and just a little bit of natural? As the percentage shows, seems like I'm a classic, not a dramatic classic from Kibbe. What do you think and will you please explain a little bit for, so I could work better with my style type? I really hope you could help me on this :-D

Not in the sense offered by Kibbie's sub types, but I feel that some of us could be mixtures of any type within his spectrum. Rather than being a soft classic, I consider myself a romantic with some classic and gamine features that need to be considered in my style. This mainly stems from having classic ingenue facial features and a romantic body. I feel that individuals who find it hard the type themselves, or who are not completely happy with their types' recommendations may be mixtures of more than one type. I also find Olga's ethereals very useful.

Dear Elyssa, thank you so much for these videos 💛 And oh my god this about figure and type is so true...It is exactly what I've been noticing- Since I saw that I am a romantic, I started buying romantic dresses and although they fit perfectly and my body looks amazing and lush, something had been very off. I realized that although I should shop romantic LINES, colors etc.- It is the CLASSIC, put together(but still feminine) style that I prefer. In those kind of clothes I feel the most like myself, like "ready to go". 😎

Hey Elyssa! I was diagnosed by Olga Brylinska's great method 3 years ago. It was life changing event for me. It helped me not only to find my own unique style of clothing but also to find out why I chose these particular fashion pieces and why people see me in a certain way. It is really liberating!

Maureen Branham wow, I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate this comment 🥺💛 It really is such a hard yet rewarding task😌 Creating this channel has proved to be a HUGE opportunity for personal growth and there’s been plenty of times I’ve questioned if I should change my format, if my content is boring and if I should just throw in the towel and do whacky editing and over-the-top personality to appeal to the masses (which would be easy BUT would not be concise and valuable information would get lost in the mix). But I’ve always been a teacher at heart. And although I do have sides to my personality that aren’t highlighted in these types of videos I decided that I value the information over entertainment for my videos. So your kind recognition of my efforts is appreciated beyond words!

That was so well done!!!! And omg it's like you had a window into my mind (and secret Pin boards) over the past few years 😂 I was geeking out hard!! I'm so excited you took it all the way back to "Mama Belle" and all the way up to Olga, and you even included Kitchener. I was doing internal happy dances! I cannot wait for your more in depth videos on each. I personally really like the McJimsey approach of composite types, that doesn't limit you to simply a yang or yin leaning of one archetype, which is the way it is handled by Truth is Beauty (whom I Pin-stalk), as you mentioned. It has always made sense to me that you could be a Classic-Natural or a Natural-Gamine, or even a third essence in there. Olga's approach make a lot of sense to me too, giving a high priority to the face, and then layering your essence over your base archetype lines. For me I think that's the only way I can make Kibbe work, because by all rights my body seems to align most closely to Soft Dramatic, and those lines seem to be the most flattering ... but then I have this ethereal looking face, and not much vixen essence to be found. If I layer Luminous and/or Mermaid everything seems a lot more harmonious. But honestly, this is all quite tricky to put together and actualize, so I'm really REALLY glad you're examining these philosophies deeper, and I'm hoping it leads to more harmony and practicality in how we can implement and execute our styles! I love this direction!!! 💜

NerdyByNature ahhhh I’m glad we’re groovin 🤙🏻 Yeah I feel like composites are the way to go for sure! And it’s definitely hard to develop an intuitive sense that these systems aim to provoke. But yeah, I can’t wait to make more videos so we can all start to pick up on all the nuances!

Wonderful video!!! Thanks for your hard work! I'm Chinese. In our culture, men in general are considered as yang, and women as yin. Also yang means sun, and yin means shade. So that reflects some of the analysis. Just want to throw it out there :)

I think this was an amazing video and I think it was really important to put out there and few youtubers (if any I have seen) have really done a quick rundown like this, from an unbiased perspective -- I think it can really give people who haven't done a lot of background research but likely have heard certain words thrown around a place where they could search a bit deeper and see if one system really just suits them best or if, like I think many of us, some of our personal tweaking and finding our style and what works best for us, can be assisted with more than one system -- even if we might feel pretty confident where we are in one system. For instance, I appreciate that Kibbe has certain boundaries and guides for each of his types that get more clarified, but also there is more room for individual style and some things that work for one person of one type might not be the best or need modifications to be the best for another of that type. It's still pretty intuitive and requires a lot of self reflection and trying to remain unbiased about oneself even in the more straightforward aspects, which is hard for even the most analytical types who can be unusually neutral observers when they need to about to about themselves. I have the relevant books to the systems you mentioned, and will have to reread Norton and McJimsey (I have only reread bits and pieces more recently). Both my results (with John Kitchener and style recommendations from others that feel right to me, and what felt right in what I read, both in older literature and newer systems. Ingenue mixes easily with other essences, and even looking at it more singularly, from older literature and more modern systems, the types of recommendations (ignoring that people would have to individualize them) have a far wider range than what would consist of "dressing like a child." It's definitely not something that many people might not be attracted to, even in basic cuts, or would suit everyone, which is fine. But In Kibbe and other stylists who have dismissed it very strongly, I have often seen in outcomes/purchases made with him that have ingenue elements like Peter Pan collars, Mary Jane shoes, little cute fuzzy creatures attached to purses, other various things that would definitely count as "cute" and to me definitely "ingenue". I tink it's often so emotionally loaded without really dissecting it or thinking there is a spectrum and different ideas in people's heads. Sorry for that novel lol. I appreciated all of the rest of your discussion as well.

Bridgett Mahoney Yeah I think it’s very beneficial to at least be away of all the different systems. I personally take inspiration most from McJimsey, Olga and Kibbe. And yes, it’s kind of crazy that to have the most effortless effect in personal styling it takes quite a bit of refined intuition or deep self reflection/honesty. And I believe it’s an ongoing process as we age. Yeah so I totally agree in regards to Ingenue. McJimsey really knew what she was talking about when she said that it’s very rare that someone would be pure Ingenue, but we see plenty of people with Ingenue so it’s still a very relevant archetype in my opinion. I’m actually thinking of doing a dedicated video to Ingenue because I think it’s one of the most overlook and stereotyped archetypes. Once I really started to reflect on her garment and tailoring recommendations for Ingenue I realized what she was getting at. For instance, one of her recommendations is “rococo”.....and at first I thought “who the hell would actually wear that style these days” and it provoked me to take a closer look at rococo. Then I was able to see the exactly why she recommended it and I could do my own riff on rococo for Ingenue!!! I was actually super inspired. It’s far from dressing like a child and more about incorporating extreme yin (of course). But not in Kibbe’s way of extreme yin. To me McJimsey makes way more sense when it comes to the a Romantic archetype. And yes, I’ve seen the same outcome of elements being incorporated but why do they get dismissed as Gamine when they’re actually Ingenue 🤔 This is definitely a topic that has my wheel turning and I feel a video brewing for sure.

@@elyssa_aesthetic I, too, am inspired and take from a variety of systems. And I don't even know my Kibbe type, I still am inspired by the system, maybe someday I will decide, but I still find it useful. And I understand about the Gamine thing -- I am most likely R or TR in Kibbe, but would definitely continue to do my own take on it. But I have also had some personalized style and color consults years ago, that I deeply connected with, that I have been building on and using as basis since then. And a lot of the major tennets of Gamine wouldn't fit in for the most part and I LOVE GAMINE (and I can fit in little bits here and there that I like that don't detract from what suits me, I modify for petiteness as well and so on. But I don't have any real gamine essence or the combination of opposites or can pull off a lot of what gamines can. I'm just very unlikely a gamine in Kibbe, and I'm not elsewhere and so that's the end of it, aside from occasional bits working on me since we are all individuals. Despite being petite and small framed, I really never got assumed to be gamine often (this was years ago), even in Kibbe, when less was up to date. Ingenue characteristics were sometimes associated with gamine then, but also some R's... So, I fortunately didn't get too misdirected. I also like Olga's ethereals a lot! I don't know how much I apply it other than see what fits in my already existing style though. But I get inspiration from smaller aspects of it. A lot here and there fit into my style and colors. I would love to read Northrup but the book is too expensive.
