hi hi!! welcome to the new year! I'm back with a discussion of buccal fat removal, plastic surgery, and body 'trends' -- let's discuss! (with compassion lmao)
@darrellm9915 Жыл бұрын
This type of procedure is usually only recommended by surgeons if their fat pads are larger than normal, and don't change much with weight loss or aging. The problem is, most that undergo this end up looking gaunt because they aren't the right candidates in the first place. But I think if people really want it, then a partial removal would look much more natural than taking the entire thing out lol. That's why it makes some people look old.

"Oh you're a bad feminist" 15:51 I think the popular show Fleabag hits it on the nail (Although it takes some thinking from the audience to get there) feminism is choice. If you chose to change your looks for you that's your business. I know you said you're well aware of it really but I wanted to make it clear this is an opinion from someone in your audience who enjoys your content. End of the day cosmetic surgery or fillers are body modifications. The same as tattoos or piercings. Obviously they have a different world around them but I think through these comparisons it helps normalise the other side as most people are okay with at least one of them. I think prejudice makes us feel guilty for wanting a type of body modification as well as women wanting to set an example for other women. I digress lol

The idea of a body trend cycle reminds of me of Bernadette Banner's videos where she talks about how in the 1800s people conformed to fashionable silhouettes by changing CLOTHES (corset shape, strategic padding, hoop skirts, etc.) while nowadays people conform to those trends by changing their actual BODIES
@littleguy8714 Жыл бұрын
true, it was about the silhouette and still is.. yeesh
@frankie1233 Жыл бұрын
I remember another historical fashion youtuber (can't remember who atm) said even though wearing corsets and padding etc was more uncomfortable physically than modern day clothes like leggings, she was a lot more comfortable mentally as her body wasn't on show and when her weight fluctuated she could still fit into the same clothes and would just modify padding or her corset. But now clothes don't give room/leeway for changing bodies or weights, even though it's perfectly natural, so people resort to diets and surgeries, like you said. It's not a surprise cosmetic surgeries are more popular because of what you said - we now expect our constantly changing bodies to fit into constantly changing trends, without the help of clothes.

I have to admit that this Buccal fat removal trend only recently reached me. And it really really triggered me. When my aunt was dying of cancer and completely wasting away, she was still cracking jokes to try to lighten the mood. She was joking about finally getting the cheek bones she always dreamed of. But the truth was that her body was so consumed that she didn't have any fat left, even in her face. She died within a month. I truly can't look at these gaunt "snatched" faces without grieving her.

you could definitely talk about orthorexia and the "gym bro" obsession with "health" (which is actually just disordered eating in many cases.) as a dude ive watched it basically ruin the lives of a few of my friends, with how much time they spend working out and obsessing over how they look. I feel like that gym culture of extreme "health", along with the whole pilates-and-green-juice-that-girl-aesthetic thing doesn't get talked about very much but its so harmful
@juliee593 Жыл бұрын
You're right, it's so worrying how steroid pumped bodies are somehow presented as healthy and achievable, and dystopian to see people obsess over their body fat % like it's a character stat in a video game. But the worst thing about this is that almost no one challenges this mentality.
@verticalboom6894 Жыл бұрын
Agree, me and my boyfriend loved going to the gym together but it spiraled for us both. I forced myself to eat way too much to gain muscle and he would take an insane amounts of pre-workout which increased stress and decreased his ability to sleep. We both had to back down and realize that we cannot be this obsessed with reaching the ”perfect” sculpted body. We also compared old pictures of ourselves to newer ones, the difference was insane. We were both much more buff and defined but we were MORE insecure than ever. People need to talk more about the whole gym bro trend, everyone always dismisses it as it’s supposedly good to go to the gym and build muscle..

I've been seeing it a LOT on Instagram of usually men standing next to a video someone who is usually (not always) a feminist, gay, or "ugly" as in they wear a lot of colors or seem like a child, with the caption saying basically "go to the gym". Not only are these individuals harassing other people, they make jokes about not seeking therapy or having friends, and the gym is the only thing they have, or that chicken and rice start to taste like gravel (in a joking sense) which REALLY worries me for these ppl.
@marymurphy1877 Жыл бұрын
as someone who wants to have a child possibly one day, I always think about how if you've changed your whole face or gotten rid of your insecurity (like nose or chin or something) if you have a kid they can very likely have all those features that you've gotten rid of. just perpetuating that cycle. how do you explain to your kid that you had their nose and you hated it so much you spent thousands to get rid of it? I think when we look beyond ourselves and see that same feature on those we love- we can better learn to recognize that those features connect us in so many ways. my round face connects me to my mom. I have tiny eyelids that you can't do any eye makeup on, and its just like my sisters and my grandmas. faces are more than aesthetics.

My biggest beef with plastic surgery is when people deny getting it, and then use their artificial appearance for social or financial gain under the claim that it came from something else, whether it's genetics or a product. We still don't know the extent of how fake the Kardashians are because they refuse to confess to more than 1 simple procedure each, and their looks are their brands so they wildly profit off the dishonesty. I can't blame someone for doing something that they believe will make them happier, but I fully blame them for muddying vulnerable people's connection to reality.

That's amazing! I think every plastic surgeon who does elective surgeries should demand the patients to go to therapist first, at least for couple sessions to make sure the issue is not deeper, because we see people who isn't happy with their looks ever and don't look even human anymore and if they had had therapy before every surgery, at least some of them would have been preventable! And it's sad that young and beautiful people are cutting themselves surgery after surgery and nothing is enough, that is not adjusting your appearance, it's trying to fix your mental problems/body dysmorphia/insecurities by plastic surgery and it just can not work! If you do it for right reasons it can work and it can make you happier.. and I 'm not trying to say loose skin removal surgery wouldn't be totally needed for some people, because too much extra skin may cause health issues too, but many many other plastic surgeries are totally unnecessary for most people and can not fix the deeper issues that causes the feeling of need for the surgery. I'm so happy for you that you had a good doctor who thinks about their patients wellbeing and not only the payment for as many procedures as possible. And it makes me really happy to hear that both have helped you and you are happy! I would be really happy to hear more stories like yours! 😊

There's a recent video by Dr. Gary Linkov on KZbin that talks about how buccal fat removal is a bad idea as buccal fat actually makes you look youthful and removing it can make people look gaunt when they're older. Honestly, there's only one person it looked good on and that was John Legend's wife (I forgot her name - and idc to know, so no need to remind me). She didn't just have chipmunk cheeks, but also a super wide face that distracted from her other features. I can see where buccal fat removal makes sense for a FEW people with disposable income, but for the majority it's unnecessary. Also, most take out too much, despite there being an option to remove only a part of the fat out. There's also mandibular fat removal. Many people end up regretting the buccal fat procedure they'd done, only to realize what they should've removed was the fat behind the buccal area. The buccal fat is what makes everyone look youthful as we age - - it's actually the jowl fat in the jaws (mandibular area) that makes everyone look older, no matter what their age. On me, they jut out when I smile and make my face look square. I plan on keeping them tho, bc they go away when I lose weight and will probably appear less severe if I ever plan to do a (subtle) face lift in my 60s, which btw is the only surgery worth investing in if the goal is to look youthful (according to Lorry Hill). Until then, I wear my hair around my face. Cheap and simple.

Beauty standards remind me of the 2005 film “Robots.” The bad guy wanted all the robots to be modified to look flawless and basically striped of individuality. All the robots that did not do this were to be seen as less than. Honestly the fact that Ratchets slogan “why be you when you can be new” matches our current relationship with beauty is terrifying.
@Meta.Empress Жыл бұрын
Yeah - it's profit-driven
@SeymourDisapproves Жыл бұрын
There were much more dire consequences in that movie than the stripping of individuality. Robots in that movie were actively prevented from accessing older parts or other alternatives to the newer ones put forth by the status quo. Robots who could afford to conform did so, and those who couldn't died without intervention from bystanders and activists like the main character. This is a better analogy for being disabled, elderly, or impoverished under an unsustainable capitalist and consumerist system which demands the maximum amount of people's labor and money to function. Maybe the "beauty" reading rings truer for people whose looks are inextricably tied to the way they make money (actor, model, influencer, etc.), but that's just not most people. The movie is fundamentally about the dangers of corporate entities controlling people's quality of life. For many people, that has more dire consequences (barriers to medication, food scarcity, etc.) than whether or not strangers on social media covet your appearance.

I think the reason why buccal fat removal is trending in particular is because it doesn’t necessarily go from unconventionally attractive to attractive, you just go from a cute youthful aesthetic to a dark mature aesthetic. Like we’re literally the sneetches going from star bellied to empty bellied depending on what’s trending.

Yes, we went from heroin chic in the 90's to methhead sexy in the 2020's, the glorious evolution of beauty.
@maebandy Жыл бұрын
Heroin chic was a cultural response to the "give a shit hyper-success focused" 80's and methhead sexy is a cultural response to the food abundant, obesity plagued 2000's. A tan was a negative implication in the manual labor age, until Coco Chanel popularized it in the industrial age as a signifier of wealth and ability to travel to sunny locales. Heroin chic meant you didn't give a shit about corporate success and selling out. Skinny as skeleton face is a signifier that you have the self-control and money to starve yourself and afford healthy food in an age of food deserts and fast food only essential dining options. Grubhut and Ubereats wasn't delivering farm to table y'all.

I would also imagine it’s popular with younger people because there’s a real pressure and desire to look or act more mature for your age. The only acceptable ages to look in modern beauty standards is whatever you currently aren’t.

@kf5338 the "empowerment" narrative around cosmetic surgery, to me, is just industry pink-washing because they present it as a choice when in reality, they're subliminally pressuring women into it. Despite having it for health reasons, the facial dysmorphia I have been feeling since is not something I would wish on anyone, and despite me having spent years researching the surgery, I did not see it discussed at length anywhere. It was all people being "super glad they got it" and wishing they had gotten it sooner. So it really hurts my heart to see people jumping and eager to do facial surgeries without being informed about this possibility, or even taking it into account. Facial surgery is almost impossible to hide. Mirrors are everywhere, and so are cameras. The discussion of how big of a whiplash your brain gets from seeing your face look so different so suddenly should be much bigger. Editing just to add: just because the odds of a procedure going wrong are small, doesn't mean they don't exist! I lost feeling on my chin and lower lip, and will need revision surgery to attempt to correct this.

In my childhood I never cared how my body looked, because no one commented on it and I wasn't reading teen magazines or other atrocities of that kind that basically exist just to destroy women. How good or bad I looked never crossed my mind. You bring up such a good point about 'unlocking' these perceived flaws as trends keep changing. It reminds me so much of the pathophysiology of Body Dysmorphia Disorder. People with this disorder are shown in studies to have actual differences in visual processing, where they will automatically focus on the details of an image instead of viewing the image as a whole - not seeing the forest for the trees, if you will. Similarly, on social media, we are so focused on parts of our face and body that we can't actually see the whole of what we look like. And the focus on these parts will shift and morph, so one day it might be the nose while the next day its our cheeks, etc. It doesn't end. As a more personal aside, I've been so self-conscious about aging and the look of my neck recently. The other night some dude who was about ten years younger than me called me "mom" at a bar and it sent me into a tailspin, thinking about all of the things I could do to make myself look younger. And when I first saw you in this video, I absently focused on how 'young' your neck and chin looked and wished I could look like you. Imagine my shock when moments later, you said you were considering changes to your neck/chin! Ugh. This is really a no-win game, I'm afraid. :{

I'm never going to forget the time when I went to get 4 units of botox in my chin at a certain clinic. While she was preparing, I was chatting with the nurse about my lower face, as I've considered getting just a drop of filler in my chin to address some distortion. And she said to me: 'You should go to Thailand to get lower face surgery". So say that my jaw dropped, is an understatement. I've never ever considered doing that before, it hit me like a truck. Since then, I'm not gonna lie, the thought of getting surgery at some point came up in my head several times. It is WILD. Not only was it extremely unprofessional, but it unlocked something in me that I wasn't prepared for. Never EVER suggest ANYONE that they get plastic surgery, unless it is the topic of conversation and they ask you for advice. Jesus Christ!

OH my god my tiktok is in a tiffanyferg video. my life is complete. tysm for making this vid essay, i was hoping you would have something to say abt this!! i fully identify with your personal feelings….sometimes, esp as a woman navigating a patriarchal society, it all just feels like constant interrogation of my choices, whether or not i’m bending to or resisting or perpetuating the societal standards we live under. hating oneself or other folks for the choices they make is definitely not the answer to addressing body negativity. but tbh i don’t know what is. another point: the part of plastic surgery that makes me leery about getting it done is knowing that once you step into certain procedures, you’re pretty much roped into a future of maintenance. that’s a very big monetary expense that will only grow….stuff like migrating filler, “filler fatigue”, “pillow face”, collapsing implants, etc…again, you can really see this in korea. korea’s plastic surgery industry has been decades ahead of the curve, and im seeing where korean celebs are now, 15 years after even the most expensive, high quality surgeries. if i did end up getting anything done (something i’ve seriously considered tbh, thanks for being open about your thoughts too) you best bet i’m giving it ENDLESS research and serious thought about how it “ages”, risks and complications, if there are any steps down the line for me, etc. great video ^^ happy new years!!

At the time it was a new thing and women weren't aware of the consequences. It looks really nice right after the surgery, but after a few years many of these women started showing us how it made them look gauge after just a few years. I've seen pictures of it, it's not the same for everyone, but it truly ruins some people's faces. I'd never do that. It's not worth the risk. We call this surgery "bichectomia", so if you type it on places like tiktok or google, maybe you can see the pictures too if you're interested. People got so shocked with this, that now I don't hear about anyone wanting to go through it.

I knew thinness will be glorified again when I felt I might relapse into my anorexia but did not know why. I actually started feeling like this at the start of 2021 and I don`t know exactly what triggered it, but I remember it had something to do with how my head looked so small with my new non anorexic body and how I did not care about this for 3 years that the fit/curvy/BBL body type was glamorous. And I think I started analysing my proportions when I began seeing more pictures of skinny girls looking pretty and more celebrities loosing weight as a departure even from the healthy looking body that was popular before. Until then I used to look at runway shows and think : ``poor girls they have to be so unhealthy ``but I could sense the trend tide turning and I relapsed in only 2 months. I suddenly wanted to become emaciated thin which I never did before, because when I was growing up it was beautiful to be thin, but to look healthy and plump as well, now I was on a whole different bandwagon, I did not live through the heroin chic years even though I was born in 98 and when I was anorexic at 18 Bella Hadid was a lot fuller than she is now, even then I knew I still had to look healthy to feel the beauty I wanted on the inside. If some of you think thinness has never gone you are wrong, this thinness has not been seen and glamorised outside of tumblr pro-ana feeds and k-pop cirlcles in the past 10 years , people used to look with concern at runway models and victoria secret`s diets . When I was in high-school I wanted to look like Gigi Hadid in How deep is your love, look at that video and see what thinness really ment in 2016, she is now a lot skinnier than in that video and she had a baby. People with eating disorders can sense this changes immeditely because we are used with analysing small details about our bodies, we will perceive somone else getting skinnier , maybe just a size skinnier. I have this thing about analysing other girls` knees in comparisson to mine, I will know when they lost weight and I will take it as an absolute necessity to not be fatter than them .

By 27, if there's one massive life lesson I've learned when it comes to beauty, it's that you'll never really feel beautiful or "worthy" enough until you genuinely invest in loving yourself. Of course, this also means unlearning the ways of thinking society has placed on us, and realizing how body trends, makeup, and such, exist not to "fix us", but to make money for companies. Once you realize these things, it's much easier to accept yourself for who you are, and love yourself for your unique qualities and features. In my early 20s I was so hyper fixated on getting a nose job, being skinnier etc. Now I wouldn't ever want to change the way I look 🥰 💕

The Overton window around plastic surgery is definitely shifting at a crazy pace. Channels like Lorry Hill's are super important in educating us about different procedures and setting or limiting our expectations. She's also helped me stop comparing myself to the people she talks about, who have entire teams of doctors, dermatologists, aestheticians, makeup artists, hairstylists, etc at their constant disposal. An outpatient recovery for buccal fat removal or whatever else is not the same thing as having professionals monitor you around the clock to make sure you get the best possible results. Also, I do think that a person getting a procedure contributes to its normalization, and ultimately their decision can push others towards getting it themselves. I always thought I would never get anything done but here I am, recovering from a co2 laser treatment because absolutely no woman I know irl or see in any media ever has acne scars as bad as mine (were, hopefully).

@@toni2309 the above messages were along the lines of reminding people that teens are supposed to have an "awkward phase" and society use to know that but sm has literally erased teen faces/bodies and even children try to make themselves look like adults now. one well known parent (and probably many more) recently had even gifted their child plastic surgery vouchers for when they got older and decide what part, because there is aways one, they want to change about themselves. so insecurity will never go away and yes bodies do change but we have to do the inner work to accept the outer body we have to not get stuck in a loop of plastic surgery which is severely increasing in recent years with prevalence especially from celebrities weather they admit they had work done or not. i hope this makes sense like there is a really important message here and it's definitely not to make someone, who is going through more changes later in their young adult life, feel worse about themselves. mostly just that teens are impressionable and this is everywhere and its scary.

Even though I'm healing well, it's pretty painful and wouldn't want to experience this type of pain again. I was a G-cup at 5ft and losing 60lbs didn't help my boobs go away. So this was my last resort.

I’m not on TikTok so I’d not even heard if this trend- really glad you’ve covered it + body trends in general. Thanks for doing this work Tiffany!

the thing i dislike about the discourse around this particular surgery is the way people talk about the cheeks after the procedure as ugly, gaunt, only possible if youre starved, etc., when my cheeks are naturally like this and Im not underweight. I wish people could lift up one look without putting down the other.

as someone with hamster cheeks, aka a lot of collagen, i've been researching this since i was like 14 with a 'how the other half live' mentality. not that i was yearning to get it done the second i was old enough, but i genuinely couldn't imagine my face without my cheeks the way they are, even if they do give me an extra crease near my undereye and less defined jawline

Right? I feel my face itself is not something I have any insecurity about anymore, so it would be really strange to see it change at this point.
