I always think marzia is such a key case to look at. She never wanted a channel or dreamed of a KZbin career instead it was expected due to being the girlfriend of pewdipie, even having her channel named marziapie originally. She eventually left KZbin all together, not due to a lack of success but because she understood it was never her dream and wanted to pursue other things. I think it was incredibly brave and a great example of someone leaving despite still having massive success, good income and a lack of drama.

Marzia and PewDiePie are so interesting youtube wise- Marzia feeling like she HAD to start a KZbin channel just because she was the girlfriend of PewDiePie and the man himself, PewDiePie who is what you would call a youtube OG, and one of those few rare cases of an OG youtuber surviving and bringing in more success over the years instead like most, going on a slow downward spiral into what we would call irrelevancy. And the way he was able to adapt his content towards his audience + the diversity in age in his audience which I find really interesting since most people have a target audience with age.

I’ve noticed this thing with singers and actors too. They’ll hit a peak and then due to just the passing of time or other factors they’ll kinda loose relevancey then they go on to either still keep putting out music or show up on tv and people are like “why are they still trying to be relevant they need to go” like??? Just because a person isn’t as relevant as they used to be dosnt mean they should give up something they truely love doing and as long as their still able to support themselves then simply quitting their job because there not as popular is just stupid to me

One thing I've learned about myself working in a 9 - 5 is that I thrive in stability and enjoy a traditional office setting. I see so much "boss babe" and hustle culture rhetoric that makes working a 9 -5 seem like a bad thing when it doesn't have to be. Some people want to be entrepreneurs and be their own boss, others want an office job that gives a predictable workload and hours. Neither is bad, but right now people are really shitting on people who are working a 9 -5 and don't have a side hustle they're trying to make their primary source of income

So many people will bash you and call you a sheep, but maybe some people really want to work in, and are passionate about, careers like finance, accounting, pharmacy etc where you likely have to work a 9-5 since that’s where the jobs are. Not everyone needs to be an “entrepreneur”, and most entrepreneurs aren’t contributing anything that significant or groundbreaking anyway.

I've always suspected that Jenna Marble's departure from youtube was partially due to her feeling done with the platform or bored with her content. This way, her exit was more "graceful" than if she had fought through the controversy only to leave 6 months later anyways. She found herself at a natural stopping point and, though ending on a low note, took advantage of it.

Yes, absolutely! Anytime I see people saying they wish she’d come back (which is often), I fight the urge to tell them that Jenna probably doesn’t even WANT to come back. She was ashamed of her past mistakes, yes, but she had also outgrown the platform and wanted her privacy back. And she was smart enough to see her controversies as an opportunity to reset.

I’m glad you mentioned the lack financial literacy that many creators have, especially when you began making an incredibly high income within weeks, months, or even days. It can be incredibly jarring and I wish KZbin offered more support for lower-income/younger creators on budgeting + financial longevity. This reminds me of glitterforever17. she went from making videos for teen girls like DIYs and funny videos about school, to making weird videos about period life hacks, to faking a mental illness, to finally admiting that she was broke and had no money left. She explained that when the views started going down she made those weird life hacks videos and then started faking emotional breakdown on live (she made 10k$ with this lives) to finally having to admit she was broke and had been doing what she did for atention. She was then evicted from her house. I feel bad for her but it's also an interesting way to see how losing your fame may affect you.

I grew my channel doing reaction videos, when I made original content I didn’t get even close to as many views as I would doing a reaction video. I felt like I grew an audience that didn’t really like me, for me and it was hard to process. I still get comments about having a dying/irrelevant channel and it used to bother me but not many people actually put themselves out there to fail. I just try to ride the waves now, and enjoy it while it’s happening.

Idk if this will make you feel better as I dont watch ur vids but a pov from a consumer of a lot of reactionary content. It's not the original content I find funny. I watch reactions as I want to see the creator react to some balls to the walls content. To me, reactionary content makes a boring tv show funny, I'm there for the reactions and the person, not just for the original content. So they dont dislike you, it's likely that they just prefer the way you bounce off something that's already there. To me those kind of videos are just more charismatic than someone just alone in their bedroom. I would almost describe the OC as a comedic lubricant, to help bring out the funniest version of you

I don't know how long ago you started doing more original content, but it could just be that the viewers who enjoy that stuff haven't found you yet, and all your current subscribers are the ones who love reaction videos. Like maybe it will just take time for the right viewers to find you, because in a way, you're almost starting from the beginning again. So in that sense, it wouldn't make sense to compare your channel now with how it was before, you should think of your channel as if it were a completely new channel.

Whenever I have a "low performing" video I have to remind myself that KZbin is not like other social media platforms. With Instagram or Twitter your post will get most of it's engagement in the first few days then it will be lost in void. With KZbin a video that was posted 4 months ago or even 4 years ago is easily found through a simple search. So even if a video gets low views in the first week it may still end up being my best video in a couple months. As a small creator I'm not making videos for my job so that stress isn't on my shoulders so I can distance myself from the views easier than a full-time KZbinr

That's why, if I were to pursue YT, ideally I would want to be one of those channels that create video essays or in a similar format. For example, the channel 'Oversimplified.' I had a hand on trying to live off being a Twitter artist. I quit my 9-5 and did a lot of commissions and had decent number of followers and engagement. But I never expected it to impact my ego and mental health so badly. You see it with how art youtubers would start beefs with each other to keep their relevance and how the internet can be incredibly hostile to the extreme. Eventually I went back to a 9-5 as a designer and I realized that a structured environment is where I thrive. The hustle and grind being an internet person is really not for everyone, you need a lot of mental fortitude to navigate that world.

this!! so much. omg i tried to do the online artist thing via Instagram, had a pretty solid following and fan base, but it absolutely killed my drive to do any type of art whatsoever. i ended up having to leave the account and move to a new one because i would get so much anxiety even looking at it. especially since i had this mentality that i had to keep posting “new” and “fresh” ideas all the time- it became more of a chore rather than something i enjoyed doing. i love making art and i am extremely passionate about it so losing that part of me, for a period of time, was very devastating. so you’re absolutely right that that kind of hustle and grind is not for everyone. all in all though, i’m happy to have my drive back with being creative again 💞💞

Interesting comparison while watching: Burlesque dancers of the 40s and 50s actually ended up in the similar financial situation (around 12:44). Similar issues with pelota/jai alai in places like Miami. The sport still has massive popularity in Basque Country but the issue is in the US it was pretty much only big with Cubans of Basque ancestry and Mafiosi. I can respect Bunny not trying to change her content and self to 'stay relevant' and 'please the audience'. In all honesty idk who she is however such creators are the best to me. They usually have the best fan base and truly do connect with their fans. For example my favorite youtubers are those that post content that is meant only for a specific audience, like say crime stories, and they make the audience connect together. Around 2013-2018 I had a KZbin Kids channel before this one that blew up, had several viral videos, and then completely died. (I made stop-motion short films with dolls, even worked with American Girl & Mattel Inc. a few times.) You PERFECTLY described the feelings of losing relevancy and the crushing defeat that comes with checking Creator Studio after you know you’ve peaked 😅 I basically accepted it and decided to move on as if I’d never done youtube- got a 9 to 5, am working on finishing up college, and am uploading on this channel on the side just for fun. I love your point that it’s integral to have a plan for when your “influencer” career ends!! It doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it just means your life is moving in a new direction :)

texan in tokyo literally decided one day they wanted a family and straight up put in their two weeks notice to youtube basically. They shut down all social media, Grace shut down her blog, and they completely ghosted the internet. According to their LinkedIn, they both now work in some corporate jobs in the US. I admire them a lot for doing that. They quit one of the most flexible jobs in the world, left Japan, and headed to the American corporate world just like that. That must have been incredibly difficult.

@@hwang9756 it was a rlly long time ago and i didnt follow it closely, i think i actually found the channel around the same time ppl were criticizing it a lot. basically from what i remember most criticism was just about grace not ryo (i think those are their names) mainly because she was doing a lot of begging/guilt-tripping ppl into giving them money, and the overall low effort some of her content seemed to have made a lot of ppl think of her as v entitled and lazy, and then ryo quit his job to help her youtube channel and ppl were like this isn't a good move. there was also generally some critiscism about her comic which i never really read so im not sure but i think ppl thought there were some racially insensitive things or like some racial fetishization on her part. i think it was generally wise they quit because looking back i think the situation might've been not super healthy w grace basically at home all day isolated in the country side some of the perceived "lazyness" ppl were getting might've been just depression.

I’m a content creator too. I’m not a youtuber, I make independent adult videos, but I find content about being a youtuber really relatable and validating, and I appreciate you for discussing it. Most people in my industry never publicly get personal because we have to put up this sexy image all the time. It’s so easy to get caught up in the numbers. I’m glad that at least it’s not public information how many clip sales I’ve made as opposed to the view count on youtube, so my metric performance can be more private. Love this video. I would really like to take it a step further and question exactly WHY "dying" channels are viewed in such a negative and toxic light. Why do people see channels that used to get more views and think "This person is a has-been" "This channel is dying" "This person is not relevant anymore" like those are measures of worth or success? What does it say about the people who think these things? What insecurities are these a reflection of? As someone with a channel that did sorta peak in the early days of youtube, hearing that kind of talk scared me from trying new things. Nobody said it directly to or about me, but I saw plenty of my youtuber friends who trailed off and moved on to something else being spoken about in that way. So then it's like, okay I used to get more views, but now if I put work into these videos and don't get more then it appears like I'm trying too hard, or I'm failing, or I'm embarrassing myself. Why do people see it that way? Why does relevancy matter to so many people and what even makes a person "relevant", and when they're not relevant anymore, why do people literally want them to just disappear off the internet and never come back?

Linking your value to your engagement is inevitable but it's really dangerous for your mental health. You need to be a little more detached from it. In terms of money, having several sources of income is always a good option, but it really depend on your career path. I'm not super old (turning 36 soon) but I've already changed career twice as an independent artist, so yes, a life is long and you do change as a person, the world is changing and the way you earn money changes as well.

Thank you for addressing this! I'm quite small so haven't really had a 'peak', but the obsession and sometimes demoralising aspect of the creator studio has already been felt.
