BED isn't really about cravings. It's using food as a coping mechanism. That's why they teach us to pay attention to how we're feeling around the urges to eat. A binge can be any food, any quantity. It can be eating a whole loaf of bread or a package of sugar free candy. It's all about the mental.

@@snickerdoodle4067 I’m not trying to minimize your experience, but respectfully and kindly - a binge isn’t a bowl of cereal (unless it’s a gigantic mixing bowl, maybe). Maybe you overate, or had a big portion, but *A* bowl of cereal is not a binge. There is an actual medical/clinical definition as to what constitutes a binge, as well as how often people do it to be diagnosed (by a qualified medical professional) with BED. There’s waaaay too many people self-diagnosing and hopping on the “I have BED” train who don’t have any effing clue what it’s really all about. I’ll never understand why someone actually WANTS to have BED, but it sure seems to be the thing people who overeat sometimes, or maybe even have some legit disorder eating behaviors (versus a full fledged eating disorder) want to do.

I went from 184lbs to 124lbs in 15 months. I was just at the top of the overweight category(bordering obese.) I didn't go at it aggressively. I only lost 1-2lbs a week the entire time but it was sustainable and I've kept it off(with normal fluctuations and muscle gains) for 14 years. So, definitely needing to lose triple or more it should come off much faster.

In my opinion, intuitive eating ONLY works if you aren't eating processed foods at all. All these fat food, highly processed, super palatable foods are designed to make you crave them and be hungrier. If I start out my day with sugar/carbs/fast food then I am super hungry all day long. However, if I don't give in my inner child and actually be an adult, I intermittent fast and when I do eat I prioritize whole foods, primarily protein. Then, I'm not ravenously starving later on and my body is actually getting real, good nutrition.

@alisond4794

It always makes me so sad to see how people struggling with BED use intuitive eating all wrong. As you said, it's about basing your diet on whole foods, cooked at home, and honouring cravings when they come, but also after you eat food and see how you feel. If they did that, they would realize that eating sugar-laden carb-bombs just makes them crash and get super hungry over and over again, and over-eating consistently makes them tired and sluggish.
@sarahburrier9123
@sarahburrier9123 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. This is what I did and it gave me a solid foundation to now work on weight loss! Also came back to add that I have started wegovy to help in my weight loss. It's not for everyone but it has been a huge help to me. Before, my intuitive eating lead me to effortless maintenance. But to eat in a deficit, even small ones left me hungry and feeling almost panicked about having to go hungry. This medication makes me stay full longer and my hunger and appetite are reduced. But, if I hadn't changed my thinking to primarily eat to satisfy physical hunger (intuitive eating), then the medication wouldn't have helped. Because I would still want to eat for reasons other than hunger. Does that make sense? I really think this whole mess of obesity and treating it requires both mental health/eating disorder thetapy AND healthy weight loss/nutrition guidance.

The issue with eating while also struggling with depression that I experienced is that I stopped caring. I didn’t care if I woke up next day so I definitely did not care of what I was eating and if it was healthy. I couldn’t really afford takeout so I was eating frozen pizzas literally everyday. When it comes to mental health issues it is so important to take care of those first too, be on right medication and then take care of the body- as if you don’t care whether you live or not u wouldn’t care to go gym and workout either. And I’ve been there; I was forcing myself to go gym and I was leaving after 20 min crying as I was so low mentally. So I do understand the ‘laziness’ part of not cooking- that people from the outside see as lazy but it is the actual mental health issue and it really needs to be cured properly.

When I get “hungry” I tell myself I can go have some spinach and cucumber. If I don’t want that, I’m not hungry. When I’m truly hungry , I’m happy with veggies for a snack. When you have disordered eating, sometimes logic is the beacon of light you need to be successful.

“It’s not hard. You just do it.” Okay stop. Lol I totally agree that we shouldn’t just give in all of the time. And it’s actually great to hear you say that you have cravings but you just don’t give in. But I also question if you experience cravings the same way. Not that it means you have to give in because it’s a certain level of difficult, but it is extremely hard if food is what your body resorts to as a trauma response or if food is the only interesting thing you have in life or if it’s the only thing you feel you can control. Unfortunately it can be that you consume a lot or very little. Again, I do appreciate your words saying that you struggle and that you experience cravings that can be hard to fight but you just keep focused and get through it. It’s nice that that’s your simple solution and there’s no special thing you’re doing. However, for those that find it agonizing to get through…we’ll, honestly I just think they need more therapy. The more therapy I’ve gotten, the less attached I’ve felt to food. The food choice is heavily processed maybe because they’re used to poor eating habits (especially in the US). The hyperpalatable nature of fast food, how sort of drug-like it is…it’s addictive. It’s a vicious cycle. Salt, sugar, fat combinations makes you crave them more. If you’re a fit person who’s more used to being fit and having a certain mindset or certain habits, it’s easier for you to make healthier adjustments. Basically, I’m saying I understand wanting to have these people make healthy options, but try to have more conversations with these people to help you understand. You seem more frustrated and confused rather than understanding to why at least some of them repeat their patterns. You may struggle to understand what they’re thinking, but they struggle to understand you and healthy diets as well. **Just because something is simple it doesn’t mean it’s easy.**

Totally agree. She’s coming from a bodybuilder mindset with a focus on protein as a food ( it’s not and 120-150g of the macronutrient a day IS a lot unless you’re an athlete etc you don’t need more than .75g per kg or something like that) and weight loss and low body fat which is probably tied up with a past eating disorder. Can’t relate to people who have easy access to cheap processed foods as the norm. As far as my past knowledge goes it’s about reducing the number of binges etc not hitting a protein target etc.

@Sam She isn’t telling her that she isn’t recovering. Recovery is not linear. And everyone’s journey is different. You’ve hit the nail on head really, the way that this girl is going about her recovery isn’t wrong or right. But she is 1000% feeding that addiction. I have struggled with binge eating/emotional eating for all of my life. I don’t know my own hunger cues, once I start, I can’t stop. I can’t eat in front of other people. It’s a fucking tough slog, because at the end of the day it’s just bloody food ain’t it? But it’s not that simple. And not many truly understand. But if you really want to overcome it and lose the weight. You have to suck it up and say no. You have to start over and relearn everything. So both ILiona and you are kinda on the same path. And both have correct opinions. It’s not about saying that what she is doing is right or wrong necessarily, but giving objective and observational tips about how to improve. Its important to think beyond your cravings & think how will this make me feel after. Stop thinking about the immediate satisfaction because that goes away in a matter of seconds or minutes. That's helped me- thinking beyond my craving and preparing meals beforehand. For me the more sugar and carbs I eat the hungrier I get. Listen to your body & find things that work for you. I have to say, i'vee been following a high protein diet for a bit now and feeling great, pretty much no cravings, have normal to low appetite, good energy. The other day i had 2 birthday parties almost back to back and ate more cake than intended and was sent home with leftovers, and let me tell you, this week, after that event my cravings are through the roof, my IBS is been way worse, i have lower energy and my appetite is bigger. I've been learning by experience how overindulging in sh*t food (especially suger) makes me feel worse and in every aspect, so when i see people eating nothing but fast food and indulging, it makes me think of how bad they must feel but dont recognize it because they dont know any better and never experienced it otherwise

Awesome on your weight loss. I used to WANT to eat a "whole ass cheesecake" but I absolutely do not anymore. I know exactly how I'll feel after two bites. It took awhile for what I want to eat to change. For a time, I had to consciously focus on remembering how I would feel after eating X, and choose my foods extra mindfully. Now, thankfully eating better is just habit.

As someone who has done a lot of the different meal delivery kit services in the US- hello fresh, home chef, blue apron, and every plate. The pasta portion is pretty accurate. The pasta “meals” are always usually higher volume than potatoes or rice dishes. And it’s consistently hard to get a good portion for any of the “low carb” options.

🍔 🍩 🍟 I’ve seen Amber do this a lot, where she totally embraces the fact that she *hasn’t gained any weight* as a success and good enough to deserve a trophy. How I alleviate cravings for certain foods is by using herbs and spices that will give me the tastes for foods these women tend to just automatically cave in to. You can make any protein and vegetable and moderate cheese dish taste Greek, Italian, Tex-Mex, Indian, Asian, MiddleEastern, etc. by adding ingredients that will satisfy that “craving” for Dominoes, Taco Bell, Panda Express, etc. it’s not that hard.

I lost 135 pounds through diet and exercise nine years ago and have maintained it so I’ll think there’s a lot of having to have the ability to be completely honest with yourself that goes into losing weight making your health a priority and maintaining it. Re - cravings - FEELINGS ARENT FACTS. That also goes for whether you feel like doing your movement it not - it’s not what you FEEL it’s what you do 🎤

I feel called out. 😂 But I CAN see what she’s doing. I’m a step or two ahead of where she is. When my mental health is Awful, the urge to buy not just a few tacos but also chicken and also the other desert and Also the milkshake is HUGE. Sometimes you’re just focusing on getting the portions back to something manageable. While trying to figure out what your triggers are and Deal with them. I’m currently in the dealt with it stage. Figured out I had to treat my anxiety with medication. Therapy and constantly mentally cycling WASNT cutting it. Got that sorted. Now it’s MUCH easier to fix the urge And habit to binge. Like today I ate poorly. But if we went back six months, I’d be eating three times as much. I’d also just be feeling bad. Now I know I’m feeling over full. I need to stop AND the problem was I didn’t replace my sweets. I need binge friendly foods in the house. So I plan on going to the grocery on the way to work and buying a Crap ton of fruit. Pears and apples. The stuff that fills me up And gives me the sugar spike my brain wants. It’s slow going and I know if I’d been recording my journey online I’d be getting SO much push back. It’d be an added stress on top of the rocky road of recovery. The small victories would be mocked and people wouldn’t be able to see the progress I Was making. I’m not gaining weight anymore. My skin is improving. I’m getting back into walking places again. My heel injury is improving. But all people would see is todays bad decisions. That my weight isn’t Instantly dropping. That I’m not consistent with exercising. ANYWAYS, I hope the same goes for her. Slow improvement but improvement all the same. That she doesn’t get stuck in this stage of things. Cuz as you get older, this isn’t good enough anymore.

I don’t have BED but I know when it comes to sweets my self control is out the window. I keep those things out of my home because I know how I get when a bag of Oreos is within reach. Maybe Kels should do some behavioral modification therapies that can help with her BED. A change in her diet could do wonders for her mental health. I know in my masters psychology program we researched a-lot on cognitive behavioral modifications that can help with these compulsions. A good start would to note when her period is about to start and keep healthy snacks around during that time. Since she knows that her triggers are PMS related, planning ahead could be helpful.

So I'm gonna add some food info as an American. Most places that sell the munchkins/donut holes won't sell them in singles. Youre stuck with the number of them that comes out to same sugar and calories as a whole donut, and often times more expensive then, too. Additionally, a lot of the ordering of fast food depends on your area out here. I'm currently where the absolute cheapest options are bagels or donuts unless you go to a corner store for crappy pizza lol. I used to live where there were a ton of affordable options that also offered healthy and affordable foods alongside their junk options. Our food selections are vastly different from town to town, let alone state to state. Yeah, she'd be miles better off if she meal prepped, but one doesn't get to her size without forming terribly difficult habits to break away from, especially if they were formed through stress and supported by family as you saw her family members supplying junk multiple times to her despite (surely noticing) her efforts to work on avoiding those things. I struggle quite often and im not even half as addicted to food as she became. And for a gal who clearly was gaining rapidly, 56 lbs in 2 years LOST is pretty good when still trying to figure out how to eat well with enabling family and friends around you.
