He does not sing "with a knife in my hand", He only sings/wrote "I sleep away with a knife". Most of the time, you have such stuff under the pillow (for all in certain books), In his case I think, he has it in his heart! Because, you know, it is Till. Thanks for the reaction.

This is Rammstein's version of "Romeo & Julia". But with an older couple who no longer love each other. So that in order to escape from the relationship, she sees only the path of suicide. After she dies, he realizes that he can't live without her after all and kills himself as well. - I hope this theorie is not too dark and sorry for my bad english.

Here is my idea about the line "all clocks have stopped". They say you feel that time runs faster when you experience beautiful things. "Time went by way too fast." If he now feels the opposite, it also means the end of the good time for him. In Germany there is a saying " Laughing keeps you healthy". Those who enjoy life have more of it. PS: Falling asleep with the knife, could indicate a suicide. Death is also called the eternal sleep. PSS: Now I also have an idea for the line with the "light". Can this mean the light that you supposedly see when you die?

My take on the light theme "Jemanden hinters Licht führen." (To fool somebody, literally translated "guide somebody behind the light" (, and then leaving them there alone in the darkness)). She fooled him, and he looks for her real self under all the lies and betrayal he had seen in their relationship.

I think it's about his ex who outwardly pretends that everything is fine (laughter and warm hands) but since she doesn't love him anymore and her hands are cold, the laughter she wears is fake and no longer healthy. He can't pretend that they have a connection anymore because he doesn't recognize her love and the person he met. Therefore... Where are you? Where is the person I once loved and who loved me.

In the end, maybe, love has turned into hatred? So he searches for her to use that knife? Till kind of likes flipping the script sometimes - you hear the beginning and think that he still loves her, longing for that lost connection, but then it turn into complete opposite of love.

Thank you for your reaction and interpretation! One aspect has never been mentioned in all these comments from reactors or reviews of this song and I think this theme could fit very well: stalking! After the break of the relationship, the one part is still stalking the other. I think in the song the perspective changes between the stalkers feelings and the victims thoughts and anxiety - thats also why the victim is searching his stalker behind the light (in the shadows) and falls asleep with a knife for protection just in case… If I ever meet Till, my first question would be if this was a further meaning of the song… But even if not, this would be still one of my favorites from one of the great modern poets alive.

the idea in the first sentence is that you think "i love you no more" is the whole messege but in fact its only the first half of the sentence. It plays with the listeners anticipation.

Yeah, no. The light he is going to look for her behind is the light at the end of the tunnel. She only no longer loves him as she is no longer alive. He misses her so much that he is going to follow her, only wondering where he'll end up(or down). He doesn't say he falls asleep with a knife in his hand. He says he "falls asleep" with a knife. As in... Using one. Warm hands become cold. You know... That happens when there's no new blood reaching them.

Well, my view of this is that he met a wonerful, beautiful girl, at least that is what she seemed like in the beginning... but later on she showed her true colors, that's what the part: "I look for you behind the light", meaning he's looking beyond her physical beauty to find a beautiful person that she seemed to be, but is not... Now for the last part, confusing indeed, he could be metaphorically looking under every stone to find her beautiful personality... also, just to be aware, the word "stein" in german actually has another meaning: Gravestone... Till uses it in some other songs... and sleeping with a knife,well, might be litteral because he's afraid of her, or a methaphor for his fear of her... my opinion anyways. Keep up the good work, man ;)

My thought on this is he is using some proverbs in the parts with "It's no longer healthy to laugh" and "I'll look for you behind the light". The first proverb is "Lachen ist gesund" and it means something like while you (can) laugh and you have humor, you feel better. In his case, laughing and humor doesn't make him feel better at all, even if how they and their relationship is a laughable matter. The second proverb could be "Hinters Licht fuehren". Means to lead someone behind the light or deceive someone. So in short, he feels the situation is not a laughable matter even if it looks like it from the outside and that he was deceived, maybe even she cheated on him

I'm sry for my english, Here are a lot of good interpretations What you Think about that: Maybe not she has died. I get the Feeling of the lyrics, that he dies, and cant understand why he cant See her anymore. In the beginning of the song he talks about a relationsship in the past, maybe as a Person Who died. He cant See her, because she is still Alive, but he thinks that she died, and so he will search her behind the light. The Last line with he falls a sleep with a knife in his Hand, Could be about the fears in his afterlife.

To the best of my knowledge -and knowing Rammstein, I don't feel like Till are afraid and I feel that the song is about lost love and that he want's to go back to his ex and/or that she passed away (due to the I search for you behind the light).. but the last part with the knife just makes me tumble that it's an abusive and obsessed person holding the knife and his search for his ex then takes a totally twisted turn.. or it could just be that he's planning to take his life because he've been looking everywhere and the only place he couldn't look is behind the light -and by taking his own life he might be able to search for her in heaven...... but with Rammstein you never really know.

My Personal Interpretation is that she died at a point the relationship got always worse and he thinks back and remembers her. He is missing, what he has lost. Afterwards he wants to see her as perfect. And looks for her or someone, who is like he wants to see her now, and can't find it. But he is desperate he dont want to be alone. Laughing isnt more healthy. For me its not happy laughing, He only laughs in ironic way, cause hes desperate. So he does suicide ( and follows her in the light) For me is to look behind the light a hint for the Death (Death light) . And sleep with the knife, not in the hand, thats never said, I imagine the knife in the breast, and he fall asleep means he dies. I love your way to try to get the meaning to Tills lyrics. You would be the only one, from whom I would watch an reaction video to Hallomann. I love this song about this heavy subject but couldn't endure to see someone laughing or cheering to this. Its unbelivable how Till manage to descripe in his poetry to show such a heavy shit in such respectful way. And the music answers the question better than thousand words could tell. The translation is a bit off. The line "[und bald] such ich dich hinter dem Licht" was translated to "[and soon] I look for you behind the light". More accurately it should read "I look for you PAST the light", as in "after nightfall / in the dark". But since most of Rammstein's lyrics are kept intentionally ambiguous, the meaning of course remains a bit misty.

It's a defense mechanism to being hurt. You don't want to show how much you love someone whom you feel is rejecting you as that's vulnerable. People don't want to present vulnerability if they feel like they will be shit on. That's just devastating when you're trying to be genuine but the other person could be doing the same thing but it's pretty fucked up to remain hostile when your spouse is offering you a sincere olive branch. I could be off base. Also, this can turn someone unrecognisable to you even though you know each other intimately and have been bonded through time if nothing else when the love is absent. It's an unfortunate situation when it seems like if circumstantial shit was different then they'd have less daddy issues and can't understand that not everyone is against them and most times they just fuck themselves over more than any romantic partner could. In the end, they seem so different bc they made you an enemy in their mind bc they don't know how to communicate their wants and emotional needs without getting overly defensive, maybe Till is insinuating that this lover had a protracted mental break that over time creates this homicidal resentment and intense paranoia of the other during the end stage of such codependent hostage relationships (hence the sleeping with a knife reference at the end).

It's the hurt pride, the feel of inferiority? Telling yourself 'i dont love you more then you love me' after breaking up, is just the loop in which your stuck, trying to make yourself less vulnerable, but the truth is probably, she can take it better, she does love less and there is no way back since now you are weak and will stay so in front of her. 'Looking for you behind the light' might be stalking behaviour, he is behind the light in the shadows, still longing for her still.

hm i took it as: i did not see the you in you i loved, that realization halted time and took away any potential joy - and i started looking for you in you/behind you (since the light is what we follow in the dark). the rest of the song is the stronger growing desperation struggle not finding her (inability to accept her current self as reality = lonliness). the pretty girls aren't pretty: usually you are attracted to your partner. but what if you can not see what you saw in the same pretty girl anymore? i took it as an objectification as sign of emotional distance.

I was a hard-core Atheist (borderline Satanist) and this song helped "bring me back" when I was listening to this song in the desert. Point. There is A God. In God, and A Christ. No Doubt.
