The song is about time :) Not about climate change or current war (the song had been written long before the current war in Ukraine started). It’s just about time that’s slipping away. We can’t stop it, we can’t hold the very best moments of our lives on pause. That what makes them so precious. And it’s about our imminent death. We all pass this way - from the birth to the death. After us there still will be the very same world - again without us, as it had been before we born. Everybody’s time is measured. And once Time will come and get us. That’s what is shown in the video. So different lives but the very same ending.
@Living_Dead_Girrl2 жыл бұрын
It’s much more explicit about the darkest parts of humanity with a line like “cast shadows without light.” Think about what that actually means. Atrocity itself. People stealing lives they have no right to take. Images of Partisan/resistance fighters in the woods are being misinterpreted as “War.” It’s taking the lives of the killers/oppressors - Guerilla resistance that’s saved the sovereignty of people and nations far outnumbered & outgunned historically. Also touches on children being indoctrinated for war and violence, a theme Rammstein has touched on but never focused on this closely, showing soldiers reflected back in opposition, simultaneously turning into younger versions of themselves, where it started with them playing with sticks in the woods pretending they were guns, to being child soldiers fighting on the side of the grim reaper, until what’s reflected back is the completely helpless newborn we all once were… and now the grim reaper takes hold showing it laid claim to these lives before they even had a chance to decide what they wanted to be. Grieving the lives we never got the chance to have. Everything with Rammstein is layered 3-4 times in meaning. It took me over a year and easily a couple hundreds viewings of “Deutschland” to crack every single scene, the combined meanings, context, subtext, and the overarching story being told in the specific non-linear format - and that was after already knowing the lyrical meaning and most of the historical references inside and out. Did anyone notice the Spaceman in the DDR Headquarters? THIS is film language showing the “Space Race” was actually driven by the “Germans” in *both* the US AND the Soviet Union (see: Nazi war criminals like Wernher von Braun, head of NASA; all thanks to *Project Paperclip* - who makes an appearance at the camp scene in the music video. That program was also implemented in the UK & Soviet Union even earlier than it was in the US). First they fooled both sides into the Cold War immediately after WWII, and further, into the multi-billion dollar insanity behind the ridiculous ideology that “we can win the war by getting to space first, totally giving cause to us secretly giving citizenship & scrubbing the identities of our imported Nazi scientists who we ‘saved’ from being put on trial at Nuremberg.” Plus the Google Translate English being referenced by everyone before Rammstein even released the official English translation, and no Germans are bothering to translate it for everyone with proper sentence structure in context, has Till’s poetry all mixed-up looking like a bunch of ironies & oxymorons. EDIT: Also, *the Russian war on Ukraine started in 2014* !! That’s over 7 years, bruh.

As a German, 41, I already decided this will be the song on my funeral. As a father who witnessed birth two times: your reaction was not just mature, but I can assure you the that what they show is accurate. And the lyrics... well, he (Till) plays with words. For example "Augenblick verweile doch" is a segment of Goethe's Faust. He uses this sentence to commit to Mephistopheles - althoug he never says it, only the "konjuktiv", a conditional clause (if he would use a certain sense, his sould would be damned). For a native speaker this song is so *DEEP*... Anyways: good job!

Beautiful just beutiful...great interpretation..i never thought about it having to do with the earth and us destroying it and killing ourselves and eventually mankind dying off and earth being as it was before we came...my initial thought was time goes on like a continuous cycle and those rare occasions when we are truly happy of course we want time to stop. The showing of the sand and hourglass ⌛ time keeps going and them showing the scenes reversing to me meant a desire to go back in time either to the moment of birth and start our lives over or to before we're even born saying no i don't even want to be born i want to go back before i was even conscious of my own existence and mortality. Them being blindfolded to me was no one knows whats going to happen in the future we don't know what kind of lives these babies are going to have..the babies themselves are completely helpless and must blindly rely on his mother or another person to take care of it and help it survive but then when we're old enough we sometimes think why? Why bring babies into this world knowing all the pain and suffering and why am i here? Just to go through suffering both of physical amd emotional pain..then end up dying which is scary enough but then not knowing what happens after you die..is that it? Is there going to be another life? Hell? Heaven? Ok damn!😮 the different messages in the lyrics and the images in the video are like a beautiful tragedy...joyful pain..tears of joy and sorrow...feelings of excitement and dread for the future all yin and yang ☯ rolled into this one powerful song and video 😭😍😥😅❤🖤

Estian, I like your deep thoughts on this new song. The hooded figure holding the babies is the Grim Reaper, within the sands of time. Time being cyclical. Don't think it's about current war, as it was written during lockdown. To me, I hear Till, who is near 60, as a man of age, writing about regrets of a life, perhaps still unfulfilled, despite all the time (years) he's put into both family and career. This is a great song. And as always, has interpretive lyrics.

Glad you could upload this and it not being blocked. This is a masterpiece when it comes to the lyrics, so very happy you got to analyze them. Of course an English translation will never be perfect but it works well enough. Great analysis, I definitely agree with the song being about both the world and the band itself. As for the video I think the black clothed "people" represent death / the reaper of some sorts yeah. As can be seen in the video, already from the moment we are born death is present, and it will inevitably happen. Death is present from day one, and the classic; "only time can tell". Same thing goes for everything really, including how long Rammstein will keep going on, we all know from the day they started, at one point, time will have to win and they will have to stop.

@@kaisander939 I'm thinking of the term as a play on words as you had stated, the "spirit of time." So being symbolized and represented in a figure that is present as birth and death. You cannot watch both at the same time. It kills the flow. But a great reaction as usual. Ok. Let´s start: 🙂 „Zeit“ (time) Three creatures of destiny are named: their names are Urd (fate), Verdandi (that which is to come) and Skuld (guilt; that which should be). Their names are considered to be Norse equivalents of common medieval notions of time in the form of personifications of the past (Urd), present (Verdandi) and future (Skuld). The song deals with the theme of death and the transience of life. These motifs are expressed within the video through various images and metaphors. At the beginning, when the band members are drowning in the sea, Lindemann sings about the river of time, in which all people are trapped. This metaphor is visualized by the drowning in the video. In the war scene, where children first play war and later a battle actually takes place, the band sings about the inability to stop the future: "You can't summon the future, you don't tolerate a stay". In the same place where children used to play, they now die in war. The song expresses the wish that the beautiful moments as children should always last. The women who give birth to their children at the Sandstrom represent the cycle of time. In the same place where the dead daughter will later appear, children will also be born. The farmer and his daughter are separated in a moment that seemed perfect for them. The father tries to stop his daughter, but fails. Accordingly, he mourns the moment. The character in the video is clearly identifiable as Death by the black cloak. However, the video also equates it with the concept of time, as the passage of time means everyone has to die at some point. Referring to the band, some fans and journalists suspect that Zeit could be Rammstein's last album, which could be another meaning of the album and song name. For Rammstein, I think, you should change your strategy to react to lyrics and the video at the same time. It is too clumsy. But you´ve tried. Read before or subtitles.

In the old Norse-Germanic mythology, three women of destiny (Norns = the murmuring) are named. They are called Urd (fate/past), Verdandi (that which is and is becoming) and Skuld (guilt; that which should be). Their names are considered Norse equivalents of common early medieval concepts of the time in the form of personifications of the past (Urd), present (Verdandi) and future (Skuld). Even if these three names correspond to more recent ideas, they seem to go back to an old Germanic idea of a nameless trinity of women of destiny. According to Mela Escherich (* January 31, 1877 in Munich, † September 26, 1956 in Wiesbaden, was a German art historian and writer), the old mythology only knew one norn, namely Urd.[3] According to the Völuspá - (isl.), Old Norse. Vǫluspá - "Prophecy of the seer (völva = seer + spá = prophecy / the Völuspá is considered the most important poem of the Nordic Middle Ages. ) - the Norns live at the root of the world ash tree Yggdrasil at the Urd spring, the source of fate, named after the Urd is. Urd has the figure of an old woman who steadily looks back over her shoulder into the past. In return Verdandi has the figur of a young woman. Skuld always looks into the opposite direction of Urd into the future. The Norns knitt the string of life for every human being and if the string is cut, the person dies. The Norns also direct the fortunes of humans and even the Æsir (Nordic/Germanic gods).

Another thing that came to my the babies being put back in to the mother to be born again on earth and also coming back in a sense they died on earth and are now being born in the other world and their birth or rebirth on earth is them already starting to die because as soon as your born your dying..your dying to live or as Rammstein put it "Wir sterben weiter bis wir leben" "We keep dying until we live" because in a sense what we perceive as dying is us actually being born again into the other world that's why the girl in the end seems happy when she dies because she knows that her death here means her being born over there..if that makes any Sense? This is art at its finest..a true Masterpiece!!

Great analysis. I think they are trying to escape Death/the future. That's why the women have blindfolds (won't see death), time moves backwards, trying to save the children from aging, etc. Death is a sentient being who doesn't approach people; rather, people inexorably come towards him despite how hard they try to fight it

Greetings from Germany o/ I really enjoy the way you interpret the song(s). Rammstein doesnt explain their lyrics and leaves it up for interpretation for everyone. The song is about time, it's that simple. When we're born, all we can really say that we have is time, we just don't know how much. Rammstein are certainly in a reflective moment with Zeit, taking stock. The guys are all at a point in their lives when they can look at what they've achieved but also look at what their achievements have cost them in time they've missed perhaps. Time is a precious commodity for us all, we should savour the perfect moments because they don't last, set aside the stupid quarrels because at the end of the day, they just don't matter. We all leave this Earth at some point and it doesn't matter who was right and who was wrong about things. Make the most and the best of every day because nobody knows what tomorrow brings. We wish we could stop or reverse time but we can't, time marches onwards with or without us. It's a stunning song that tells a truth that is painful to hear. The video is so beautiful in all of its aspects. Rammstein have simply done us again. They've caught us off-guard with the simplicity and passion of the song . Simply genius.

By the way, I don't think it's a reference to the current war. Cause to produce such a video takes too much time. Months maybe. I get why some people say this may refer to the band itself, but I get the feel of a way more universal message. However. Everyone can relate to this.
@Living_Dead_Girrl2 жыл бұрын
Or, it follows the theme Rammstein has been building towards in recent years commenting on WAR ITSELF. Just because it’s not about ONE specific war, doesn’t mean it’s not about war - it’s about the social construct and brutality of war. That’s only one small part of the extremely layered meaning to this song and the video. The universal message is about the depravity of humanity and trying to survive the mechanism of war still being conditioned into young males from the moment they’re born. From sticks in the woods pretending to be shotguns, to actually pointing guns at eachother for both sides of every single war and atrocity that goes against humanity itself. Time is irrelevant. History repeats, unless you stop making the same mistakes. Rammstein has clearly made this point in the last 3 music video releases - plus there’s Till’s solo work that builds upon this urgent theme even more overtly. ALSO this Russian war on Ukraine *started in 2014* - that’s more than enough time. Again, one of it’s primary themes is about war itself, and it’s release is timely so yes, they are including this war in order to make the message all the more urgent: that man must stop taking lives they have no right to take in the name of self-appointed rulers who have no right to rule. FYI, this video took, AT MOST, 1 month to make - from pre-production to post-production. Most music video shoots don’t last more than 4 days at the *MOST* . This is my Industry, I know firsthand. With a high-budget like Rammstein gets - cut that timeframe in half. Actually having financing and enough crew and equipment, everything gets done very quickly. The feature film “Spun,” Directed, Produced, and Edited (completely on is own in only 2 weeks) by the brilliant Jonas Ackerlund, whose also filmed at least two Rammstein music videos - was filmed in only *21 days* . And that was on a shoestring budget.

I think it's simply about time and the motivation to make the song is the band members are getting older, the perception of time is different. Of course, there is probably a lot more to it. But I don't think a breakup of the band is one of the meanings. Good thing about the song, it can "speak" to so many people in different ways. Older people about the time they lived and they have left, Tod someone who lost somebody beloved about the time they spent together and now the timeline parts away. Even someone who loved and had that perfect moment. And of course to people worried about tht current war in Ukraine, who lose their beloved one, lose themselves and in the end maybe we all lose ourselves.

Hey :-) I like your reactions. ;-) You have a true reaction and not a artifical. This song is about time "Zeit". You can say livetime "Lebenszeit". You have seen the big figure at the beginning. Thats the death. "Wir sterben weiter bis wir Leben" (We´re dying until we live) "Sterben, lebend in den Tod" (die, live unto death) "dem Ende treiben wir entgegen, keine Rast, nur vorwärts streben" (we are drifting towards the end, no rest, just striving forward) "am Ufer steht Unendlichkeit, gefangen so im Fluss der Zeit" (on the shore stands infinity, so caught in the flow of time) Now you see, its our time. We llive and we die. The Scene in the woods, you dosn´t see the meaning of the words you read! It starts with strong mens and ends with small babys! But, we hear: "Warmer Körper ist bald kalt" (Warm body is soon cold) "Zukunft kann man nicht beschwören" (You can't summon the future) "duldet keinen aufenthlat, erschaffen und zugleich zerstören" (does not tolerate any reverberating, creating and destroying at the same time) "Ich liege hier in deinen armen, ach könnt es doch für immer sein" (I'm lying here in your arms, oh it could be forever) "doch die Zeit kennt kein erbarmen, schon ist der Moment vorbei!" (but time knows no mercy, the moment is already over!) It means the great time as a child. A child can be everything. This moment is to short. No child has time in their life. Who can childs be a child? In the video you see the death took the babys back through the sand (in german we say "Staub" / dust) back to the beginning, the birth. The last scene, i think one of the hardest scenes, we see a couple sit in the nature and the woman knows its her time to go. But we hear: "Wenn unsere Zeit gekommen ist, dann ist es Zeit zu gehen" (When our time comes, it is time to go) "Aufhören wenns am schönsten ist, die Uhren bleiben stehen" (Stop when it's most beautiful, the clocks stop) "so perfekt ist der Moment, doch weiiter läuft die Zeit" (the moment is so perfect, but time goes on) "Augenblick, verweile doch, ich bin noch nicht bereit!" (Wait a minute, I'm not ready yet!) This means, in every life there is a moment that should never end. illness, old age or love. Every moment of our lifes are important for us. We don´t have enough time for everything we want to do. This lyrics have such a deep meaning, but it is hard to understand when you don´t speek german. "Zeit" Time is such an expensive commodity, of which little is available. This song means this. We don´t have enough but we need much more of them.

Not sure if it was mentioned already: It would be easier for you to turn on CC (yes, they are in German), then go to Settings and turn on Auto Translate, pick English, und voila, English Captions. ;-) (Function not available in KZbin Apps though)

Sweet heart, you should know better with Rammstein, watch first then look up lyrics. I feel you missed out so much by trying to do both at the same time. The video is so captivating and i feel you missed out on it's true impact on your perspective by not watching it completely frame by frame

Time never stands still, its floating and we float within the stream without anything we could do against. These three tall black figures aren´t death or time, I believe they are the `Nornen´, three female figures in the nordic mythology. One of them is the main Norne (named Urd), accompanied by the two others. Simplified they stand for past, present, future. They live at the Weltesche Yggdrasil (a kind of World-Tree - the kind of hour glass in the video for sure can be read as Yggdrasil, with roots and treetop), at the spring of fate, and they accompany us from birth to death, spinning the rope of our personal life and fate. No thing and No one can fight or escape them, not even the gods. The girl doesn´t. And in the end, the Nornen are cutting the rope of life. You saw the rope, gliding from Christophs neck - its `his´ rope, cut and frayed and its is leaving him `cause he is fading away. This is so beautiful, sad and comforting at the same time... And I liked to see more of Paul and Ollie. And Till´s voice is getting better and better. So epic! Oh, btw - the vocals refer to Goethe, "Faust", and to Platons Höhlengleichnis. Worth to check out!

Possibly Rammstein's best music video, and this band's vids simply cannot being interpreted while being glued to a smartphone screen half of the time. Also, you cut the vid before the end. This was quite painful to watch.

this song, makes me feel, that we need to stand up against evil, such as immigration from outside of europe and protect europeans like ukraine.
@wolfgangengel48352 жыл бұрын
Wow, what a messed up and evil comment. Nothing learned. But yeah, we got to protect Ukraine. The rest of your comment goes down the drain, and doesn't reflect Rammstein at all.

@@wolfgangengel4835 yes. We agree refugees from ukraine. But not from syria or afganistan. Only bad people come from them. And no matter what, in Finland we hate those people and dont want them here.

Have the Germans already forgotten about the 27 million Russians destroyed?And about the 6 million Jews burned in crematoriums?
@wolfgangengel48352 жыл бұрын
Why such a comment? Did you ever hear of the word "Vergangenheitsbewältigung"? It's a german term and means something like "coping with the past". That word was born after WWII. Germany is a multiethnic country of immigration today. We have very strict laws against the "forgetting". Nazisymbolism, flags and stuff are forbidden in germany. Denial of the holocaust is forbidden in germany. We put 95 year old men and women in jail, who are still Nazis, for crimes like "denial of the holocaust". We have tons of WWII documentaries on TV, and they are shown in school, calling out the evil nature of these events, tesching children that history never shall repeat. There is no patriotism in germany. At least not for regular people. Have you seen Rammsteins video for "Deutschland"? It's an antinationalistic song, about the fact that germans are in a love and hate relationship with their nation, because of its horrible past. Because of our own history, it's even illegal to deny genocide in other countries. You can't deny in germany that turks killed millions of armenians during WWI. So if every country would go through the same process of historical reappraisal like germany, the world might be a better place. Russians still have lenin and stalin statues everywhere. Americans are still celebrating heros, which could seen today as mass murderes or slavers.
@arnodobler10962 жыл бұрын
No! Watch "Deutschland" by Rammstein and visit the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Concentration camp memorials like Dachau Bergen-Belsen Flossenbürg... maybe google "Stolpersteine" or en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolperstein they are everywhere And how does your country deal with the dark parts of its past? Don't say they don't exist.
@wolfgangengel48352 жыл бұрын
The only reason I could imagine you're making such a comment is, because of misinterpretation. The song isn't about the wish to turn back time. Even though the reacter kinda suggested that. The song is about the wish to keep perfect moments, like being happy with your children, or lying in your wifes arms. Very basic things. It's about that in the moment we're born, we're already dead, cause that's what time does. By the way, there's more history to germany than WWII and not everything was dark. So if you really would like to turn back time, you might find other nice places. But then you gotta say, only because it's Rammstein, it doesn't mean that everything they do has to be german-related. As I said in an upper comment. The message here is universal. Literally timeless. 😉
@IGotNoJam2 жыл бұрын
We literally talk about this topic regularly in school. Its impossible for Germans to forget about it. What's even your point? Germany does a better job of actually owning up to the faults of their past than any other country that has also done horrific things and still does. Tell me any other country that shames itself as much as Germany does! Gtfo here!
