My husband recently retired from teh USMC and I remember him coming home telling me that they would compete with each other to see who could do the most pull-ups. He said that that was the worst part for most of them, the rest "wasn't too bad." The idea of a 3 mile run for me is nauseating, how he thought it was easy is beyond me.
@Mac_visions_5 жыл бұрын
Still watching the video, but as a U.S. Marine, I'd like to point out that chalk or any other kind of supports on the pull ups aren't allowed. Still good though, you guys obviously have more weight on you than the average person though so anyone who faults you for your low pull ups or run time is ignorant. For the crunches, you both forget the most effective technique for success: having your partner count by 2s (1,2,4,6,9,10,12,13,15, etc...) Good job on the run though boys. I know overweight, cigarette smoking, alcoholic Marines who can beat that easily, but 3 miles is a bitch in itself, and theres not many people who can complete it. It's interesting to see bodybuilders who I follow (Mike, I watch a lot of your content, good stuff) step into my world for a bit, and I think you guys did an awesome job! If you guys were based in the US, I'd tell you guys to try getting access to a Marine Corps base and giving the obstacle course for a try; it would make for a good video. Peace!

Just ran my first full PFT as a poolee. Usually we run a IST but we ran the PFT and I really embraced the suck😂. I did my 3 miles in 23:14, finished with 92 crunches and 14 pull ups starting at a complete dead hang. I'm much lighter than these guys though I'm 5,9 amd weigh 150lbs. Do you think this is a pretty solid score or what could I focus on before basic training?
@Mac_visions_5 жыл бұрын
@@mattwood1225 Most run times aren't spectacular either way, and when you get to boot camp you'll be running all the time anywa, so I would work on your pull ups and crunches. It's easier to progress with those exercises and easier to max out your points in each category. That being said, if you have time for it, definitely work in running too. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to improve all three at the same time, but I'm saying you're closer to maxing out with pull ups and crunches. And being able to max out your pull ups gets you respect with the drill instructors and the other recruits. Now that also means they could put you as guide or squad leader and fuck with you more, but at least it puts you in prospects for honor graduate. Just depends how far you wanna progress in this gun club.
@ChiefPapi5 жыл бұрын
I remember when I was in, some of the best runners ate burritos and smoked cigarettes the morning of and ran 17s... these guys definitely wasted energy slowing their descent during the pullups and crunches... pullups work better than chin ups to max imo... also if they had a bigger belly they wouldn't have to move as far for crunches. I've always been a crappy runner, usually coming in last at 23 minutes... so..... I feel good about myself🤣
@Superevilfrog5 жыл бұрын
Support isn't allowed, but when I ran my final PFT (long ago... enough that' I'm not confident it hasn't changed), a perfect score was 20 pull ups, not 23. And you are allowed to switch grips too, as long as you don't come off the bar. So if you're arms are worn out, you can get a few more from those fresh back muscles.
@ronfelix65075 жыл бұрын
Always started my 3 miles with a good smoke first. They should have brought their arms lower. Less distance to go up. Plus your buddy doesn't count by one.

To put the run in perspective: 18 minutes/3 miles = 6min/mile = most varsity high school cross country teams 14-15min/3mi = 4:40-5:00min/mile = elite marathoners (over 26.2 miles) 12:37min/5K (3.1miles) = men's world 5K record Most 5K races (3.1 miles) for amateur runners finish in 18-35 minutes. Your time of 26:24 corresponds to an 8:48min/mi pace, which is respectable for an "average" runner and very respectable for two guys who don't run! Great job!

Per the Marine Corps Order (MCO 6100.13A)- “A certain amount of inherent body movement will occur as the pull-up is executed. However, the intent is to avoid a pendulum-like motion that enhances the ability to execute the pull-up. Whipping, kicking, or kipping of the body or legs, or any leg movement used to assist in the vertical progression of the pull-up is not authorized. If observed, the repetition does not count for score.” The order also says- “Legs may be positioned in a straight or bent position, but knees may not be raised above the waist.” HOWEVER- “The bar must be high enough to allow the tallest Marine’s legs to hang straight without touching the ground, when arms are fully extended.” But they’re obviously not running it for promotion or entry into the Marine Corps lol. They did a pretty good job overall! The run isn’t easy for anyone unless you’re one of those physical freaks who runs in their sleep (aka-NOT ME) They should do the Combat Fitness Test (CFT) next!

Best advice I could give anyone on increasing their pull ups. EDIT: Cardio is easily the most important aspect of a Marines physical training, which is why we run all the damn time. It sucks, and most of us hate it, but were damn good at it. I only ran over 19:00 twice in 5 years. Once in basic training on a broken foot 21:37, and the other 5 months later 19:52. @askaboutRudyV5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that will kick their ass, but I know they will do better at the CFT than they did on their PFT. The CFT uses the energy system that makes us secrete alot of lactic acid because of the added resistance and hiit type runs etc., and bodybuilders are used to using that energy system, their lactic acid thresh hold/recovery is very high/fast. They should kind of thrive on the CFT.

advice from a marine trainee: pull-ups- when u get ur chin above the bar, just drop to dead hang. u are using a lot of extra energy controlling ur drop. dont stop, just go. if u stop u will get more tired if u think u can't get any more pull ups with ur grip in the one direction then switch grips. at boot camp they will have u switch grips if u don't think u can do more I have to say that i am happy to see that u did ur research on the crunches because they aren't normal crunches crunches- so the minimum for crunches is 55 to pass not 70 how u were holding his legs is exactly how u have to hold others legs for crunches in the marines when doing crunches dont stop, u will get even more tired if u stop u both actually passed the crunches and the pullups 3 mile run- let me say first that u have to finish a 1.5 miles in 13 minutes and 30 seconds for men and women have to finish 1.5 miles in 14 minutes and 30 seconds besides what i mentianed u guys both passed and did a fairly great job

Do a Marine Corps CFT at some point!!! You guys did great, especially for doing it without training for those specific events. Marines are notorious for having some of the worst health habits yet somehow have the ability to max out a PFT/ CFT. There's people that smoke half a pack before the PFT and sweat alcohol during it. We pass our fitness tests because there's a lot of little thing we do to improve our scores. Not that you're ever going to do a USMC PFT again but. . . Pull ups: You can't come down from the bar or use the sides for support, but you are allowed to switch grip when you want. Relax your muscles on the decent; your muscles get more tired quicker if you're using them to come down instead of doing a controlled drop. Also tilt your head backwards and don't go up as high. You just need to get your chin over the bar, not your whole head. Crunches: One thing I do is the same as the pull-ups; relax your abdomen on the decline. I don't use any energy coming down so I can do a lot more reps a lot faster. I max out with half a minute to spare and look around at all the struggling males. And, if it makes you feel better, not a single one of Mike's crunches would've counted. His arms where raised off of his body and to count for score, they have to be flat against your torso. His counter would've been like " zero, zero, zero. . . " Run was good. I'm garbage at running so I have nothing for that.
