I have been struggling with my weight since I graduated university in 2018. The last 2 years have been especially hard, with lockdowns and motivation issues. The set point theory really doesn't make sense from a physiological perspective because your body has to constantly adapt to changes internally and externally. If things were set, you wouldn't have such large fluctuations in weight. I love videos like this because to someone with a background in human biology it seems like common sense, but sometimes you just have to have someone spell it out for you to remind yourself how the body works.

This is exactly it! Love it! thank you! I was a “chubby” kid in my head. I was very athletic and was the tallest girl in my class all through elementary school, 5’2” in fifth grade (which actually is my current height now, not so tall anymore 🤣). But all through middle and high school I never felt like I was skinny. Even when I was a size zero and weighed 105 lbs. now I’m postpartum one year after my fourth kid and even though I’ve lost all the baby weight, almost. I’m 3 lbs away from my weight before my first baby and I still feel like that chubby kid and that I can never get my body back and struggle with seeming to not loose any weight. Then I decided to focus on addressing my stress and sleep and just establishing a better routine and I’ve lost 3 lbs this month. Just trying to take care of myself and not trying to loose weight. Once I can establish a good daily routine for exercise I will focus on strength building and not weight loss. It’s all about mindset and our internal dialogue plays a big role in our overall health. Thank you for another great video!

Same thing goes for me i over train i do ton of cardio sessions and heavy weight lifting and I always feel guilty from eating a bit more by training even more my body aches almost everyday, and i look even puffier and bloated all the time im so stuck in this mindset 😭 the idea of resting or even reducing the intensity frightens me 😣😣

@@sukab995 i totally understand. it took me ages to make the leap of faith of fueling my body. but honestly, i am so much happier with how i look now than how i did back then. i have so many fewer “bad-image” days. i will say, it was difficult for me to stop underrating and over exercising. i couldn’t believe anything people said. i seriously thought that they were lying when they said they ate at least 2,000 calories. not to mention the girls who are 3,000…i was in shock. i promise that there is so much freedom in it. keep doing research and you will see that you need to fuel your mind, body, and soul❤️

I love the informed commentary. So many on KZbin just preach to you what works for THEM but she always makes to back up her statements with science. I lost a great deal of weight but I know it was through stress and I’m mentally preparing myself for my journey of getting in shape again- knowing good and well I’ll gain weight but trying not to get in my head about the number on the scale. What bugs me more is how many ppl tell me how great I look when I know in my head I’m malnourished. It messes with my head!

Lots of love from MI! 💗 I've gained a ton of weight within this last year and haven't done much to get it off. I got out of a bad situation that stressed me out and moved into an environment that allowed me to be much more happier, sedentary as well as eat more. I plan on changing my routine as I can't allow myself to stay in a sedentary lifestyle and also to reign in my food consumption as my mental habit has always been not to waste food. Those are my personal dealings with food, lifestyle, environment, mental and stress of late. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and growth in your journey! I'm happy that you were able to know more and grow to know your past self was rightfully changing due to your environment, family loss, etc.

I didn't know I needed this so much. So I used to be a shubby kid as well, later on in life I started to workout and be more active in general and I lost all of the weight and kept it off for many years. Ocassionally struggling with small increases due to stress and whanot but I always got back to my ideal weight. Fast forward to 2020, quarantine happened, I went from walking 6km everyday and working out to not moving at all during the day... I gained a lot of weight and I've been struggling so bad to loose it... I started to workout again, I've been doing weight lifting for a whole year now and I have built muscle and I feel strong and I love that but I just don't know how to loose the extra fat... I feel like I look bulky and it drives me crazy... I'm eating at a calorie deficit (wondering if I might be eating too little), I'm doing The Full Body Fit guide to stay consistent and I'm trying my best to stay active in between workout days (going for a long walk, doing some cardio videos, rope jumping) but I still can't loose the weight :( sorry, I kind of wanted to let it all out as I started to do more cardio and changed my diet in November and my goal seems to be so far away, it's very discouraging.

I've read articles about the concept of a "set point" that was established by an individual maintaining a specific weight for a long period...not that it was "pre-determined" but that it was something established through habits. They observed that the "magic number" seemed to be around 100 days...that is, after maintaining a consistent weight for a minimum of 100 days it would be easier to bounce back if weight was gained. My own experience has been pretty consistent with that idea.

I'm glad that you talked about set point theory. When I was reading about it, I had the same questions about obesity and also the fact that I always noticed when my activity levels (walking to work or school vs driving) changed, so does my weight. However, my food intake I typically have to make a conscious effort. Stephanie Buttermore seems to think set point theory was at work with her all in journey. I would be interested to see what your thoughts are on that. If it is set point theory at work, would it have to do with her leptin/ghrelin levels being a little messed up 🙂

It’s definitely an interesting topic! I’ve loved digging more into the science of metabolism and weight loss these past few months to even better understand my own body 💛 Everybody is unique but I think that’s the cool thing about settling point theory. You can be “in balance” with your body at various points, depending where you’re at on your journey.

I lost 25lbs a few years ago even with a diagnosis of hashimotos and on top of discovering my love of running, I was also doing an autoimmune protocol to address some food allergy issues. I was not counting calories at all. I was intuively eating whole foods. Fast forward two years later, a pregnancy and a now toddler, I do notice my diet has been off and steps have decreased and I'm right back to that 20 plus extra pounds... You're definitely not doomed. My body has been focused on feeding a baby for two years and the extra calories and fat were needed.

I know that pre- and probiotics are healthy. Unfortunately they make my digestive problem even worse, although I took high quality products. What really helps me is a metabolic diet for six weeks a year including L-Carnithine on a homeopathic basis. Then I can keep my weight for more than half a year. It's good to do this diet once or twice a year because it is very healthy anyway (detoxing etc,)

It sounds like that from around 8:00, there may be psychological factors at play as well. Like the brain subconsciously rewards itself with things like parking closer to the shop rather than further and in order to keep the energy in vs energy out thing going, we need to try be a bit more conscious of the little every day movements and actively make the decisions rather than subconsciously. 🤔Feel like what your saying in some of your videos can also be tied in what the guy from Better Ideas says in terms of getting out of ruts and creating better routines.

the flaw in your thinking here is that you seem to refuse to accept the idea that some people's set points are labeled as obese. obesity is not a thing in nature, it's an arbitrary category that we've created. No one is "born obese" because we don't apply the obesity category to newborns. Some people are just naturally heavier, even if you don't like it.

While you do cite a scientific theory, most of this video seems like your commentary and it’s apparent that you have a bias based on your ability to lose your “stubborn 20 lbs”. Body types absolutely do exist. Two people can exercise and eat exactly the same and have very different bodies. I agree that healthy habits can prevent obesity, however body fat and muscle levels can vary significantly despite two people practicing the same habits because of their genetics/body type.
