Its really interesting to see others progress who have already been through many of the stages of training, injury, progression etc. I started about 3 years ago but have also had long periods of recovery, laziness and general breaks but now my main goals are to improve my weighted calisthenics, particularly chinups and getting a better OAC and most of all. Thanks for all the great content you make and if you happen to see this comment id be interested to know what your weighted calisthenics pb's are if you have ever tested them, eg chin, pullup dip

I went to orthopedic doctor, sport physicians and even chiropractors(the desperation) Since two weeks i follow your routines every day and can finally squat pain free and deeper. I will definitely incorporate your routines as standard in my training. Thank you man🙏🏻 and congrats 🎉 You deserve it

You invite people to share their story here in the coments. Here is a small part of mine. I became disabled about twenty years ago. Multipple Sclerosis. Over the next few years, my life was turned upside down and inside out. In 2004 I realized I would end up in a wheel chair for sure, as I eventuallyd did, but I somehow managed to keep it on hold for a total of eight years by an extreme regiment of diet and exercise, my only two real "weapons" in this fight. But in 2012 I finally could hold that wheel chair back no more. In 2013 I DID find an experimental treatment for MS and literally bet my life on it. I had to sell my home to pay for it, but the treatment actually worked (the treatment is called HSCT, for those interested). By then I had almost died twice, one of which was a near death experience, and I kept going blind over and over too. My eye sight would gradually come back little by little every time, and then: BOOM, another relapse and I was blind all over again. All of this gave me PTSD in the end, it was stressful in the extreme. But at the beginning of 2014, after my treatment, I started my new life with my MS now finally dead, and the long road to recovery began. Long story short: I managed to learn to walk again but it took seven and a half years of extreme effort, and every expert I ever talked to told me it could not be done. They were proven wrong. So now, for the last few years, I am trying body weight exercises among many other things. I can do no squats at all or other leg exercises in the normal sense, but after several years I can finally do dips (five), push ups (about ten to twelve depending on the day) pull ups (three) and chin ups (six or seven). I do twelve minutes of slow jogging every morning (this is a crazy good exercise in my opinion, developed by Dr. Tanaka of Japan). I also noticed that you used the Thera Band flex bar btw. and I rebuilt my left hand in large part by using both that and grip trainers by Iron Mind. Great tools! I still use those just about every day. All of this is to say: you CAN rebuild your body too almost no matter what your situation is, so why not give it a shot? I could think of no good reason NOT to myself, so I gave it everything I had. And I pulled it off. Good luck to the rest of you too, and thanks for sharing your story, Tom. I found it inspirational. Ciao. Jan H. Maaso.

Started 2 years ago at the age of 16 from literally zero. I had no muscle, quite a bit of fat and couldnt even do one proper push up. Since then I pretty much trained every day (Calisthenics). I started out with simple push-ups, later then pull-ups and other easy movements. I also focused on my nutrition and therefore lost about 12-15kg of bodyfat. My first goal was to be able to do muscle up which i reached after about a year of training. I also started to eat more and gained more muscle. I currently weigh about 65 kg and am very happy with my weight and skills. My backlever is about 20 sec. My staddle front lever about 12-15 sec. and my handstand on paralettes can last up to a minute. I also work on weghted pull ups (currently 20kg for 6reps×5). Fun fact: today i reached my goal to get a free standing frogstand to handstand press and i feel amazing.

I can say that my frist two injuries were fault of my coaches, the others part of my journey. (Btw i have 18)

@@fernandosulantay what the hell. Mate you need to cool it down. That many injuries at 18 years old.... Whoever is training you like this is an irresponsible fool. You want to build your body up, not break it down with injuries that might stick around for many years or even life. Go back to the basics and stop training so hard (and stupid).

Wow, thank you. That was simply encouraging. I've been doing calisthenics for 4 years now and sometimes get into this mentality that I've got to push it because four years is more than enough time of doing the basics. So then I push it for a little while, then my body is at it's limit, & realise that I don't want any injuries - in fact, I'd rather progress over a decade, delighting in the simple movements without injury, rather than toil through pain for decades. So thanks for outlining what your progress has been like, the choices & consequences along the way; this has assured me that consistency for a decade is better than intensity for a year.

Hi Tom! I’ve been a big fan of your channel for a few years now and just rewatched this video. So much resonated with me! I’ve been training calisthenics for 5 years now. When I started, I couldn’t even lower myself to the ground from a plank or hang on a bar. At my best, I can now do a one arm push-up on my right side and two consecutive rings muscle-ups (I should say I am a woman in my mid 30s and work full time as an anesthesiologist, so there have been many challenges on this path!). My improvement has really plateaued in the last year or so and I’m currently dealing with a supraspinatus tendinitis that is so frustrating. Seeing your recovery from your injuries gives me so much hope!

First of all I would like to thank you for all the mobility and stretching videos you post. They helped me alot through my shoulders and back pain due to the sedentary lifestyle I have as a software developer. I am currently trying to achieve a handstand..I'm 6 weeks in but yet not able to get it right off the wall. So I'll keep building my way into it slowly but surely..Thanks alot !

I enjoyed this video for your perspective on training evolution. I too started on bro training . I have gotten to middle age and figured I should get good at running. This year I've not been running, rather learning bodyweight training. I like learning from your channel. Keep up good work and producing good videos and educating people like me as well as inspire us to try new things.

Tom Merrick. I'm new to your channel. 500K is wicked. Thanks for this video of the progress. Life's hard. Especially in the calisthenics "dark side". Love that it's a long term process. A journey. Awesome video. 🔥

I’ve been out with an injury for 8 months but you’ve inspired me to at least work on my body in the mean time, for example the stretching and flexibility aspect of stuff, so I’m still remaining strong and Scott.

I started training in March when the pandemic hit Los Angeles, and I needed to find a form of exercise outside of the gym. I'd heard of calisthenics, but never thought it was something I could do. For the past six months, I have used Tom's home workout and it's been great. Lately, I've been making some adaptations as I have been aiming for some more personal goals beyond a strong, functional body. I am so glad to have found this.

I found your channel under lockdown around March 21st, when you had about 340k subs. Congratulations on 500 k, you deserve it! I've been doing your routines on a daily basis, everyday before i go to sleep, which have helped me getting more flexible. I've got massive respect and admiration for your work. Love from Denmark!

Love this video, thank you Tom! It's super cool to get a better sense for your own journey, and I really appreciate your honesty about your mistakes. Seems really human to me! I can certainly relate, I got into weight training in 2015, doing Starting Strength for several months and making gains until a recurring low back injury while deadlifting and squatting put me down for the count. I think this was due to improper form, caused by muscle imbalances and mobility restrictions from constant bicycling w/o stretching. This led me to try to self-diagnose and treat; I did some of Coach Sommer's stuff for mobility and strength training (injured myself again with some weighted forward bends) and now doing some basic bodyweight rings for upper body strength, practicing handstands a few days a week, and following your beginner hamstring flexibility routine as well as daily greasing the groove as recommended in one of your videos. Pilates has also helped me a lot with building pelvic positional awareness and learning to properly engage my core. I'm excited to set some clearer goals - would love to get OAHS as well, and I'm close to my goal of palms to the floor pike! - and keep showing up. Thank you so much for your humility and willingness to share your journey!
