Love the video just a few things I could add for context. 1) Santos and Gusto weren’t able to be brought into the squad in January for actual reasons. Lyon only agreed to the transfer when we said we’d loan him back and Santos couldn’t get a work permit. However both are massive talents, Gusto had Real interested and Santos was the U20 Sudamerica joint top scorer as a DM of all things. Also captained them 2) Cucurella and Koulibaly were played ahead of Badiashile as he couldn’t play in the CL as we could only register 3 new players and registered Enzo, Felix and Mudryk 3) We actually have a Gvardiol type CB ready. Levi Colwill is on loan at Brighton and has been pure class for them. 4) Cucurella isn’t a LWB at all and has put in some MOTM performances at LCB, his real role where he relentlessly won back possession 5) We had that Hojlund/Ferguson role in Armando Broja. Essentially a perfect super sub, as he’s rapid, powerful and explosive, he then had an ACL tear in our friendly during the WC Vs Villa. Now out for the rest of the season 6) Potter couldn’t really afford to stamp his impression into the squad as by the WC we had already had 10 injuries (Kante, Kovacic, James, Cucurella - got really ill then had a child, Fofana, Koulibaly, Loftus-Cheek and Chilwell). In total we’ve had about 20 injuries this season, and not like Liverpool’s case where they have their useless backups like Keita and Gomez injured, instead we had Kante injured from the start of the season. Every time a player hit form, they got injured or suspended’ (ex: Felix, Chilwell, Zakaria) Reece James is the prime example of this, he was the best RB itw before his injury Vs Milan, and has now injured himself 3 times this season

Colwill comes back next year and with him, Fofana and Badiashille, you don't need to spend the money on Gvardiol. Biggest needs are a DM to partner with Enzo and a striker who can put the ball in the net. More importantly, they need a manager who can bring a structure for all of this young talent to fit into. They've been playing aimlessly for months with no compactness in the midfield and no patterns of play on offense.

@@daniel5534 Not saying he's as good as Gvardiol, but there's going to be a limited transfer budget for the summer, and having Silva, Fofana, Badiashille, and Colwill as your top 4 CBs makes it one of the stronger and deeper positions for this team, so I'd prioritize other areas before thinking about a top of the market CB.

As a Chelsea fan, I've consumed a plethora of content about what's gone wrong this last year or so and what a proposed solution could be. This is the most well thought out breakdown and analysis I've come across so far. We'll done. I'm not that surprised as your content is generally very good. I like that there are no hot takes, there is no hyperbole, and (politely) nothing you've outlined is particularly groundbreaking. You understand that it doesn't need to be. The most frustrating thing about this season is that despite how dismal its been in the short term, long term, there's plenty to be optimistic about. There's plenty of young talent in the squad, and plenty of players with good resale value over the next transfer window or so. I would tentatively recommend you do more club analysis in tandem with your player specialisations. Keep up the great work, pythagoras

Lol good timing after another loss. I agree with pretty much every point in this analysis. Caicedo makes much more sense to me than Rice or anyone else, because he is the most defensive minded. If Chelsea want to win they need to create and score, thus Enzo needs to play higher and ofcourse we need a more direct striker. Gvardiol would be solid in defense too (although actually paying for him might be an issue). Colwill is good, but I haven't watched enough to say that we should hedge our bets on Colwill.

I agree with every point in this video, potter is a process manager, and they did play some nice football. But even the most clueless chelsea fan can make a better starting 11 than him and even make better subs. Both of those characteristics made Potter look inept. Next season, they need to offload on all of the deadwood and bring in the players you mentioned or strengthen up in those areas. But I doubt they can / or have enough money to go all the way.

I made a line up on Friday to play against Brighton regardless of poor coaching by Lampard. Sterling Aubameyang Kai Kante Enzo Mount Chilwell Badiashile fofana James In a possession football but mixed with direct counter attacking mindedness... Don't sleep on the ball,... Sterling should stretch the pitch.... Kai as the inverted winger but major as the second striker. Mount and kante as box to box. Tilt the defense to 3 man defenses occasionally to allow Chilwell or James function as wing backs or as centre backs occasionally.

Too many ‘technical’ players who just aren’t that good or suited to the premier league, not enough physically dominant players. Need a fine mix of both to get success! Average players who have just signed, like Cucerella and Koulibally. Like you said, why hasn’t Zakaria played more? He’s looked good every time I’ve seen him and he’s the exact profile we need in midfield. Toney uptop for me sounds like a no brainier! The deadwood amongst the squad need clearing out as well, but they’ll probably go during the summer. The right signings and right manager are paramount over the next year or so!

I mostly agree until you talk about banishing players into the reserves. Then there's a few problems: - Financially it's awful. If you banish 10 players into the reserves for half a season you potentially knock £10M+ off their value. That means you could be looking at £100M give or take just lost by undermining their value. - Long term you don't know who the new players will connect with best and which of them settle. So the only way to find out is give them time with everyone to find their places and connections. This enables the fullest possible data to get this crucial summer window right. - Contractually you also can't stick 10 players in the reserves as there will be clauses which result in paying them more or reducing their fees. This bounces back into the financial considerations. - Cohesion and maintaining a non-toxic atmosphere is vital. Ostracising so many leads to severe challenges with group dynamics and motivation. Some players who you try to keep may not an up very happy if they are about to lose the guys they link up best with on a team. So then players you want to keep may just down tools. - Good luck getting any ostracised players to make an effort for you if you are in an injury crisis of any kind and have to bring them in.

Right now the club is knocking millions off all of its players due to the bad results. Instead of having 30+ unhappy players, you would rather have 22 motivated players all of whom are being trained properly and have a proper role within the squad. The atmosphere is already toxic so this strategy of trying to keep everyone happy doesn't work. Footballers will always be unhappy if training is of a poor standard, overcrowded and they think the club doesn't know what it is doing. 23 man squad is more than enough to withstand a injury crisis. Any more is overkill.

Don’t think this is a problem we can afford to throw money at anymore… While I agree Cucurella seems like a poor buy right now, I feel there is potential in him playing in a back 4 and later inverting to form a midfield duo of him and De Paul/Rice. Then you have the remaining back line playing as a 3. With the other midfielders, preferably Mount and Enzo playing ahead of them. A 3-2-2-3 would be great for build up. Mudryk and Sterling/Madueke as wingers would be sound. Just need to make that Striker a priority for us right now. Great shout for De Paul btw, love that idea.

I’m all for the suggestions you mentioned but it seems like we’re going back to Tuchel’s tactical style and we know how predictable Chelsea got near the end of his tenure. Our recent signings have been made to move away from that and I just wonder what we could potentially look like as the finished product.

Well what we want is a upgraded Tuchel formation as well as a squad that can be used in a 433 too. So lets say you get Caicedo. That would allow you to play Enzo next to him or in a 433 you could use those two as well as a Santos... therefore 2 b2b next to Enzo. Front 3, featuring 2 proper wide players - something missing in Tuchel's lineup. A faster back 3. More depth at wing back/full back - Tuchel side got eaten up by injuries due to no depth. Also a 9 which fits into the squad dynamic and doesn't kill it.

1) CFC should buy both Amrabat & Caicedo in the MF. They're both DM/MC position & would both be great with Enzo. Rice would be at least 100M & he's not worth that much. Amrabat was amazing at the World Cup (probably the best DM/MC at the World Cup) & Caicedo has been excellent for Brighton all season. Caicedo is one of the major reasons that Brighton are doing so well in the EPL + FA Cup right now. 2) CFC should buy a number 9 who can score around 20 league goals a season. The chances are being created, but nobody can finish them off. With a goal scorer in the side, it would also help the ones who assist to get some goals too (give them some more confidence)

I agree with the points that a ST and number 6 is crucial to fixing the problem at Chelsea. Also feel the GK situation needs to be sorted ASAP, would love to see a video on Gregor Kobel from dortmund who has been linked. My choice for the next manager would be Naglesmann and would hope he used the 4231 variation he used at Bayern, using Mudryk in a similar role to the way he used Coman in that system just on the other side.

You are correct as always, often very solid takes I would have a bit more realistic approach to the changes though With colwill on the books, who already starts in brighton - gvardiol aint a priority We wont sell either koulabaily or cucurella (because noone will buy them) I think cucurella is "solid enough" with proper coaching, and a set strategy. And even if k2 has his issues, when partnered with proper players (like your argument for silva) he looks decent. As for mentioning badiashile over fofana (as a partner for gvardiol) fofana is our 2nd best defender after silva atm, but always injured

Agree that Colwill if he comes good, means Gvardiol less of a priority but just a reminder that academy graduate, on loan and expecting him to be the leader of your defence for title/ucl wins is a big step up. Not saying he can't eventually do it, but that is a huge huge ask... not many in the history of football can meet that level of expectation. Cucu for me offers nothing of substance but happy to wait to see if he can improve by season 2. Badiashile for me is the bigger defensive talent. His defensive IQ is higher.

I didn't mention GK replacement because I still think Kepa and Mendy deserve a chance behind a settled side before judging them. Colwill still remains untested at the very highest level and should be blooded in slowly.

You seem to have more hope for this project than I. Although in a football manager world someone can make an exceptional dynasty out of this exceptional talent, my reservation regarding that is the absence of winning culture that comes with that players. The only players in the squad, who are going to be there for the next few seasons depending on age only, with a past of going succesfully during a title winning season are felix and sterling. Then you have only Mount with a vast experience of living in a dressing room with crowned champions. So my point is that a lot of talent and no champion mentality= Tottenham places! :D Of course there is arsenal who has the same mix but arsenal do something very rare in football, they motivate themselves by enjoying all the elements of the game, which is the best. Why is nobody talking about Ndidi next to enzo?

I like your videos and analysis, but on this Chelsea one there's some bits I don't quite agree with -- particularly pertaining to what to do now in this scary dumpster fire situation. The lack of not buying a true CF is the biggest problem and quite disgusting considering how much was spent. Lampard is trying the 4 3 3 and it's not working well, particularly with Kante out and the player selections he has made. Also, Koulibaly actually has played decent recently.

I’ve asked for a proper Cf though! Also Kouli might be in a decent run of form but is not the long term answer. Can’t play 433 without two aggressive box to box mids next to Enzo and Chilwell a liability in a back 4, so need a left back who can play in a 4 and leave Chilwell for games where you’re using a 5.

I'd sell Kepa and get Onana and keep Mendy, any good coach now a days can get a system going to suit even Mendy when playing out the back. Then you have our manager, personally we need a big experienced manager but while balancing the need to not lose focus on what we want so De Zerbi (he is experienced, look back at Sassulo) Sarri (I'm serious) and a wild card, Diego Simone. Player wise we actually need to get rid of liabilities so bye Cucurella and quite a few others quite frankly. We need to purchase a Mitrovic and I'd like to buy Toney but he may be banned so Osimhen wouldn't be a bad shout. Midfeild wise I'd go for a brick wall so Palhinha, then give Matseen a chance next season in lb.

Excellent analysis. I'm a Chelsea fan and I said it from the start that the team should have found a way to transition to a 433 system as soon as they got Enzo. Your front 3 pick is perfect. For the midfield 3, I would go with Kovacic, Enzo and Zakaria. Zakaria would be key as his role would be to win ball and provide defensive cover for the back 4. Personally think that Chalobah can play that role as well (iirc he started out as a defensive midfield and has played the role fairly well in a few games under Tuchel). Back 4 is easy. Chilwell, Badashile, Fofana and James. Thiago and Koulibaly as stand ins for either of the starting CBs. More specifically, I feel that a Badashile/Fofana CB partnership is the club's future and has the potential to be one of the best in Europe under the right coaching and mentoring. GK - I would bring Mendy back. As much as I love Kepa and acknowledge Mendy's weakness with the ball on his feet, the fact is he's a tier above Kepa in terms of shot stopping. And quite frankly, Kepa has let in quite a few goals that I just can't see getting past Mendy. Most important of all would have been for Potter to fully stamp his authority and make clear exactly where everyone stood as far as the team was concerned. I also feel that regardless of how he felt about Aubameyang, it's a fact that Auba is the only one in the team with anything resembling a natural instinct for goals. Him consistently starting havertz over Auba in the striking role was the very definition of madness imho.

Nice video and cool breakdown but what I would like to add is I think the biggest problem with this squad is they have been drilled into playing a certain way for so long with this possession based systems and building up from the back that We are too slow in attack or we are stuck in our own half with 8 or 9 players. We need to go back to basics pick whoever is the best actual striker not false nine, midfielder or winger and then pick the best team to feed him chances. Get the goalie to play it long and move the defence forward to the half way and have your midfielders ready to receive the goal kicks and fight for 2nd ball get it the ball out wide attack the fullback to cross to forward and whoever else is in the box. Then rinse and repeat. When you lose the ball if your close press if not get back to our half. It might be old fashioned but it gives them something to build on but when things are rushed plan A is sorted and everyone knows their job. Confidence then builds and talent and ability comes out. Chelsea are team of very good players performing badly not a team of bad players they just need to try something new and work hard.
