At least he has a cab. I picked many acres with an Allis D-19 and a two row picker shelled covering 300 acres for about three years before we got our first combine. We actually kept ahead of a neighbor who was using an International 315 two row combine. Made for some very long cold days, but we got the job done.

Seeing the corn on the ground reminds me of my youth with our scout troop on a few Saturdays after harvest following a wagon picking up those ears of corn from the ground and tossing them into the wagon so the scout troop could fund some camping fun for the next summer. Usually damn cold and picking corn that stood all winter meant there was lots of ears to recover so we did it in the spring and winter. I don't recall benefiting from all that work but it must have helped those farmers we worked for.

The picker had to run more than 100 yds into the row before finally settling down to start gathering the corn. Before that the corn was not feeding in with the gathering chains and half was left on the ground. This is where you hire high-school kids if your area has high-school kids who are not too valuable to use in ground picking. But America is not it what it was when I grew up and you could make 80 or 90 dollars in a week picking.

Very cool to watch. I’ve never actually seen a picker in person before. That was really fun to watch it go. And the wagon train, that’s awesome. 7 in a row is pretty crazy. @@boehmfarm4276 Looking at how much trash was coming out the side of the machine, I'm not surprised... Lot of the stalks going through with it, so that's probably a big part of it... plus the worn husking rolls you mentioned. Those 20 inch tires look WAY better on that machine, particularly when you're picking in the mud... BUT I noticed a big hairball of mud and stalks and stuff over on the RH side of the machine, so you might want to weld on a piece of angle iron above the tire as a mud scraper to keep that crap out of that header drive chain, which IIRC looked like it only cleared the 20 inch tire by a couple three inches or so.... don't need that crap in your chain! So for us city dwellers, the corn picker machine cuts the stock somehow separates the cobs. Does the whole cob go in the wagon or does the machine somehow separate the kerbals from the cob. Used for feed ?
@boehmfarm42765 жыл бұрын
A corn picker puts the whole cob in the wagon. Word on the street is that ear corn is the best cattle feed.
@lukestrawwalker2 жыл бұрын
The corn picker works like a corn head on a combine... a pair of gathering chains pull the stalks into the head directly behind the snouts, the stalks are pulled between a pair of steel plates with a gap in the middle of them for the stalks to pass through. The stalk rollers underneath the plates mesh together as they rotate to pull the stalks downwards through the slot, popping the ear off the stalk, as the stalks are crumpled up under the machine. The gathering chains then push the ears up the snapping plates until they get tossed under the cross-auger. From there the ears are passed up into the picker's husking bed, which uses rubber rollers pinching and rotating together in pairs to peel off the husks from the ears, which is all the trash coming out the side of the machine as it augers the husks out the side. Loose kernels and the ears are delivered to the elevator which carries them up and tosses them into the wagon. Later! OL J R :)
