Being involved with a project in Africa I fantasized about buying a used picker from the US and shipping it, having watched with a sinking heart the rebuilding of your picker I decided that employing local labour added a certain rustic charm to the harvest and would make a more socially inclusive video.

Hope it starts and works like when was new after fighting the picker, Just shows there is no need for new expensive machines to make a go at farming. Great work ethic that has become lost by so many whinny people who expect large paychecks for doing nothing. Enjoy this channel keep posting video's and the get it done attitude .

Your video gives me greater appreciation for my dad who spent a life time assembling and repairing farm equipment including extracting farmers from equipment like you are rebuilding. Mangled hands, arms and legs not uncommon those many years ago. And as a former Northwest Iowan, I appreciate your tolerance to the severe cold working on complicated and close tolerance machinery. Damn good job!!

Yeah corn pickers were especially bad about grabbing folks. My BIL's dad got his hand caught in the husking rolls one time but he got lucky-- the safety clutch popped loose and he managed to reach down and kill the tractor. He didn't get mangled but it sure was a wakeup call... A lot of others weren't so lucky! OL J R : )

@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ham68229 What p!sses me off the most is that the new stuff has so many kinks ENGINEERED INTO IT... from planned obsolescence to designing stuff to have a specifically limited life (just out of warranty) to fail so the dealership makes a killing on repairs. On motorized equipment, they add all the pollution garbage which COSTS you extra money to buy, maintain, keep supplied with expendables (like DEF), repair, and it reduces fuel efficiency and shortens engine/component life... and RETURNS ABSOLUTELY *ZERO* IN VALUE to the farmer having to pay for it! Not for me, thanks-- give me a brand new tractor tomorrow I'd trade it for two older ones and keep the rest of the money in my pocket, and be in better shape in the long run to boot! Then there's all the electronic "bells-n-whistles" GARBAGE which is all "ooh-ahh" when it's new and working good, but give it a few years of dust and vibration and heat and cold and moisture and it all gets full of gremlins and goes to h3ll and then you're screwed... Again, thanks but no thanks... I prefer a cable or lever or just using the old mark 1 eyeball and the computer between my ears to run a machine, those things I can DEPEND ON... not some push button touch screen crap telling one of the computers to check with the other computers and activate a module to switch on a relay to power a solenoid to move a valve or whatever... The more complex they make 'em, the easier and worse they fail. Later! OL J R :)

I know you aren't a big John Deere fan but are you ever going to love that picker after all of those replacement parts and hard work ! Not running down your previous pickers but this is now really top of the line ! May have to raise the price to your ear corn customers it'll be so clean ! Lot of work there but it should last you a long time ! Gonna run that with the 2plus 2 ? Thanks for the video !

LOL @ 9:18-- "Spring rolls"... making me hungry for Chinese food LOL:) Think you meant roll pins... @ 32:50, a "straight sided" punch is a pin punch, for driving in or out roll pins or other stuff stuck in a small bore. The "tapered" punch is a "drift punch" used to align holes in parts so you can drive a roll pin (or bolt or whatever) in without marring it, or getting it partway in and it stopping because the the inner hole on one part and outer hole on the other aren't aligned. Driving the tapered drift punch in will pull the two holes into alignment. Nice vid... people act all snooty about it being an "old machine" but when you put new parts in it, you're basically making it "like new" if you're doing it right (new bearings, bushings, wear parts, etc). Make it work as good as or better than anything "new" you can buy, and while it costs a bit to do it right, you'll get a lot longer service life out of the machine and do a MUCH better, cleaner, and faster job with it when it's done. Bravo, kudos, and keep up the good work! OL J R :)

I know that this is an old posting, but when setting the pressure springs, If you compress them too much, you eliminate the space between the coils, thereby eliminating the spring's ability to compress. That makes it impossible for the rolls to move apart. So, you've defeated the purpose of having springs in there.

NOT as good... I'll take an American bearing over cheap Chinese junk any day, but a lot of times you're stuck with what they have, which is almost always the cheap Chinese junk. Their steel is terrible-- soft as cheese so it deforms or overhardened and just shatters under load. No in between. Their quality control SUCKS. BUT it's REALLY hard to get good bearings anymore, American or otherwise... I've got original US bearings that have lasted 40 years, and replacements that do well to last a few years, depending on the severity of the service they're in. Hipper bearings do good to last a season. Later! OL J R :)

I like your channel. Sixty years ago, I was a kid on a farm just a few miles west of you--near Dallasburg. We used to harvest a LOT of ear corn (it was either ear corn or silage--no combine). We put the ear corn thru a hammermill and fed the ground grain/cob mix to the cattle. Some folks had machines which would shuck the ears, but we did not. How do you use ear corn today?
