Such a huge plane, loaded with people, food and fuel being pushed back by just hooking on to the front wheel axle...without stressing/breaking it ..too good!!
4 жыл бұрын
How about this ,the aircraft is the best part of 300 tonnes fully loaded,and it's only a difference in air pressure the gets it off the ground ,and it lands at 250 kmh on just and handful of rubber rings called tires ,the front stanchion that is being used to only push the plane not carry it is incredibly strong

Only takes maybe 15,000lb of force to move it. If you wanted to move it at takeoff speeds that would be different.

Fantastic video...So, does the tug driver have full authority over the nose wheel steering? If so, how does the tug steer the airliner?
@GlobetrekkerYYC
@GlobetrekkerYYC 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the tug driver has full authority over the nose wheel steering, we use a by-pass pin in the nose wheel that deactivates the nose wheel steering to the flight deck.

So, I just flew last week - and I got to wondering - during pushback, how do you coordinate steering to maneuver the plane? Is it coordination with the pilots, or does the tractor have the ability to alter the movement of the plane backwards? Is it kind of like backing up a vehicle with a trailer attached?

The tractor is very high power !
4 жыл бұрын
Very low gearing is what does the work ,the tractors are very heavy giving it lots of grip which you need in high torque /pushing and pulling situations ,the tractor may only be 300 horsepower ,which is the same as a lot of cars ,but notice how the tractor is only slow ,like a train massive pulling power but no real speed ,a formula one car may have 800 horsepower but would have great difficulty pushing that plane back ,not to bore you just to let you know how things work

how much horsepower is required to push back that much weight?
@GlobetrekkerYYC
@GlobetrekkerYYC 6 жыл бұрын
Actually the horsepower numbers aren't that impressive. I believe this particular tractor is only about 180HP however what really counts is torque and this one is around 600ft/lb at a fairly low RPM.
