I am now retired. I was a commercial flight instructor / flight examiner attached to a large pilot training organisation. We trained crew who went on to fly for major airlines all over the globe. I occasionally watch videos similar to this and wonder if the guy or girl at the controls was one of my young hopeful students or flight test candidate, ten or more years ago.

What's the typical pitch you aim to maintain on the B787 after rotation, on other aircraft it's 15-20 degrees nose up but looks significantly less on the 787s, is there a reason for this also?
@xentroide2 жыл бұрын
I don't know whether the 787 is underpowered or the takeoffs are highly de-rated but I always see 787s climbing much more slowly after takeoff than the narrowbodies such as 737 or a320.

Thanks ! :) I turned them off to do some manual flying. It's fun and it's to stay proficient. Taking off without them is not a good idea on the 787, in case of engine failure. That's why I took off with them ON and then later asked to turn them off ;) Hope that makes sense

@pilotmax2 жыл бұрын
It's unfair to compare as the 787 is a much more modern design. However it does have its drawbacks too. The 787 is so complex and full of software, the 737 is a basic design and I feel like I know how it works, compared to the 787. @hairyman15442 жыл бұрын
8:06 does the 787 have an emergency chute that deploys out the back? 🤣 After rotation you see there is not much runway left to make a safe stop in case of aborted takeoff just before V1.
@Marix4982 жыл бұрын
It seems it was enough runway to stop at V1 speed. Automatic rejected take off brakes are very powerfull... About runway left after VR and while taking off... It doesn't matter, continuing is the only option after VR... V1 speed is calculated according to runway lenght, actual conditions, weather, aircraft configuration etc. It must be possibile to stop the aircraft at V1 everytime.

“Flight Directors off” on takeoff, shortly after departure, with your HUD (heads-up-display, clear glass in front of pilots sight) still down! What an incredible misuse of today’s modern technologies. I am a 787 Capt for a major US airline. 40 years of aviation experience tells me that this act of a “professional” pilot does not align with today’s SOPs. If you want to “feel the need for speed”, don’t put your HUD down! Fly your aircraft as you’d like without the HUD. That is fine. However, if you want the absolute, most efficient, safest, manufacturer’s and company’s best practices available to you, use the HUD. Maverick would be proud, but he never flew an airliner!

I hate when airlines make captains put their hands on the throttle until V1! My flight control means my flight control! If were pilot flying I’d keep my hands on the throttle all the time, even after V1! It just doesn’t make sense to me.
@Hk-uw8my2 жыл бұрын
This rule is not from the airlines.But from boeing themselves. The captain is the one who decides to interrupt the take off or not. So it makes sense .
@pilotmax2 жыл бұрын
Yes, As Hk416 said, the captain is the only one trained to the reject decision and maneuver, that's why he/she is holding the throttle.
