The C-17 is a great plane its a shame it's the last one rolling off the line but knowing that Beoing has plans for the C-17 is great.

CJets Planespotting™ at YYC It's sad,true, but the C-17's primary customer, the US Air Force has stopped ordering them. What's Boeing got to do with that?
@CJetsPlanespotting9 жыл бұрын
navy57 Because Boeing is the one who builds the C-17.
@navy579 жыл бұрын
CJets Planespotting™ at YYC Thanks for sharing that with me. I'd have never guessed who builds them on my own. Let me try this another way ... If the Air Force won't fund building any more of them -- and the plane's foreign purchasers don't want any more, either, Boeing has NO reason to build any more of them.

I remember watching a C-17 being put through its paces at the "Wings Over Sonoma" air show in Santa Rosa, CA in 2006. I was amazed at its maneuverability, with the tightest turn radius I've ever seen on a transport. Of course, it was quite a novelty to watch it back into its parking place following landing, and was open for public tours within 15 minutes. Incredibly large cargo bay - sorta reminded me of the old C-5 Galaxy, but somewhat smaller of course. Still, I suspect C-17s will be flying for many years to come, since their short takeoff and landing runs almost rival the C-130's but with a much greater cargo capacity. Nonetheless, it saddens me to know that such an efficient aircraft will no longer be manufactured. Job well done, crews, well done!

I used to build these ... starting ONE YEAR (Dec '85?) before "production" began at Bldg 54, when the C-17 was being built by McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Co., There is much I could say, but suffice that I was there then, doing that ... as a Development Production Supervisor for Aft Fuselage Assembly. I fondly remember So MANY of my co-workers, pulling 12 hr shifts - 6 days a week & 8 hrs on the 7th day, the Senatorial & Congressional "Dog & Pony Shows" when they came around to "review production progress" ... the Harley I bought with mjy (Mgmt) Bonus, Romantic Liaisons & battles won & lost with enemies ...

+Boeing Next they could have moved some 737 production here.. but it's being closed and land sold off to developers. The Long Beach McDonnell is merely just a shadow of what it was back in the hey day. The last aircraft to be manufactured in California.

After the merger when things got on track the C-17 actually became the plane envisioned. It's just too bad there couldn't be a 1-for-1 replacement of the C-141, as there is so much demand for airlift.
