If the -9X will be able to carry more than 400 passengers, the 747 program may finally come to an end. With today's levels of engine reliability, twins may take over the skies from quads for good. That would be a sad day, though.

I still wouldn't discount the A380...that still is doing pretty good. But on general most planes will be twins yes...

-9X carries 407 in 3-class config.... I reckon it will soon be their no. 1 selling long haul aircraft. I understand that they have just released the 78 and airbus the 350, but the 77X variants are just as fuel efficient and can carry a greater number of passengers.

As much as I hate to say it, this aircraft will probably phase out the 747. Although, the 747 would still be used frequently by cargo companies.

Also the 777 only has one incident related to engineering with this aircraft in total. Since it released in the mid nineties and there was no loss of life. Now I know one got shot down but you can't blame the manufactures for that

What I know is the B777 and B787 are superior to AB in almost every way. Boeing is a much more astute builder than less agile Airbus. Has the A350 demonstrated the superiority promised?

I can't wait! I fly Cathay Pacific from JFK to HKG all the time (which uses 777-300ER) and I'm hoping that they'll put 777X's on that route when they're delievered

Boeing hat mit der 777 und in der neuesten Version 777X derzeit ein Flugzeug entwickelt, dass allein schon von den Eckdaten her als führend auf dem internationalen Markt bezeichnet werden kann. Dieses Flugzeug ist wohl das Beste im Vergleich mit anderen Typen die bisher produziert worden sind. Es hat eine enorme Kapazität in allen Punkten und "weniger" ist bei der 777 mehr. Es hat nur zwei Triebwerke und ich halte diese als die modernsten die je gebaut wurden. Die 777 ist in der Frachtversion das größte Flugzeug auf der Welt und das auch nur mit 2 Triebwerken. Sogar das übliche 3. Landegestell bei dieser Größe wurde durch die Kunst der Ingenieure eingespart. Das mindert nicht nur das Gesamtgewicht sondern spart auch an Wartung ein. Das gilt natürlich auch für die nur 2 sehr guten Triebwerke. Und was diese Maschine kann, hat sie eindrucksvoll auf Air Chows und natürlich auch in der Praxis nun seit Jahren gezeigt. Jedenfalls bin in fasziniert von diesem Flugzeug und halte es für das Beste in seiner Position als Langstrecken Jet.

captain787 well the dash 8 isn't selling very well, the 777X got almost twice the orders just on its launch day than the dash 8 got in several years.

sad but true .... Boeing would need to do something like a 747-8MAX but companies love twins and new products like the 777X are basically a 747 on 2 engines.. they even widwned it .. its just 10cm short of a 747 width.. Airbus with the A380 has a chance to save 4 engines some longer since the A380 aims for a way higher pax numbers (for high-density routes) and has anounced the A380-900 (longer) and the A380NEO (more efficient).. and then there is the Il-96 but no-one wants to buy them.. i presume due to political reasons (they might not be as eficient as an A330 or A340 but they cost less than half)

i was there, i helped build the 40-58 building. 27 acres under one roof and it certainly looked that big while standing on it. nice views from up there.

The level of interest (and preliminary orders) for the 777X is not unlike that shown for the 747-400 when it first came out.

Thing is the 777-300 is still very much a new aeroplane, this will be amazing and like the 300, it is a beautiful looking aircraft aswell, just look at the airlines ordering it, some of the biggest powerhouses in the industry

+PA28 With the new generation of airliners coming online, it's smart to have a successor lined up. Composite materials and a new generation of ultra-high-efficiency high-bypass turbofan engines will make the -300 and 300ER far less competitive by the time the -8s and -9s enter service.

When I watch how the GE90's propel such a large aircraft it is amazing! One engine alone is a beast, but two engines are now putting the four engine crafts to bed.

now that ETOPS has demonstrated a safe reliable record for more than 30 yrs I'd say the 747 and A380 have a limited time frame. I do however think we will continue to see them in the freight market .. but as for pax. they flying into the sunset. the commercial aviation market will be a twin engine plane competition. the end of the 3/4 engine era is here.

The 777x is the reason the A380 is not getting any orders and will be the reason the A380 manufacturing line will be dismantled within 10 years. The reason why is that the average passenger load the A380 has been getting is about the same as the 777's have been getting. The airliners have not been selling out the seats with the A380. The 777X is extremely efficient compared to the A380 with it's 4 engines. The 777X will do a better job at moving people around the world at a much lower cost from buying them ti operating them. The cost of a new 777X is quite a bit less than the A380 while the operating costs of the 777 is a lot less than the A380. The range, speed and fuel savings of the 777X is to much of a good thing that the airliners will be by-passing the A380 for it.

A380 still has one chance.. it can seat quite more passangers than even the 777X in the same configuration.. so it can compete in very-high density routes to congestiones airports where you cant fill more flights .. also carrying 600 people in one flight than 400 means paying only one crew flight-wage , one airport and operations flight tax for 1.5times the passangers than in a 777X.. so in thouse routes it might offset the slighty larger seat-mile fuel cost.. Also Airbus will give it one more shot to the 380 and anounced the 380-900 ..a larger version with more seats and also an A380NEO .. Its a simple question of knowing where to fit it.. on the other hand if companies set for the 777X and 450-500 seats they might say "we have this seating and thats it..and if there are more demand for seats we simply raise the price"

sparrowlt The problem is, they will not fill these A380's to capacity. The airlines don't need a jet that can house up to 800 people per flight. They can't even fill 'em to 600 on a regular basis. Check the sales.

Airbus didnt sudenly decided to make a jet bigger than the 747 .. there is the need to massive pax carrying in some oversaturated routes where they cant fit more planes or flights in some mayor hubs.. an A380 allows to carry 2 flights in one .. if there is enought demand.. if not then just buy a 777 , A333 or A350 (as A345/6 are dead now)

***** Not true. DL is an Airbus stronghold now, so no 777X for them. AA could order the 777-9 to build on growth from the 777-300ER, and as for UA, perhaps 15 777-9s could work. AA doesn't need the A350-1000, as it's too incapable for their network. Plus, they already operate the 777-300ER, further decreasing the need for the A350-1000.

Kevin Metz Delta is also hesitant on ordering airplanes right off the bat. They prefer to give them a little while as fresh, more efficient models such as this plane come out not to long afterwards.

It'll be interesting to see this battle between Boeing and Airbus in the next 10 years or so, considering these planes won't even be delivered for another 5-7 years. But certainly an interesting competition and tough to beat a old-timer like Boeing which has been around from the get-go.

I like how to A-340 is the 777's competitor with roughly the same volume, yet it's inefficient enough to use 4 engines and the A350 is a ripoff design of Boeing, yet still manages to have a smaller capacity and higher pricetag.

Singapore Airlines (SQ) maybe Considering Ordering this Boeing 777X just as SQ had operated the Worlds' Second Largest Operator of the Boeing 777 including the Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner and Scoot Airways with Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner.

Pack more people in packed cabin. Money...thats the evolution of aviation. Either you pay for business, being able to fly further in a coach cabin is NOT good. Coach class revolution. Thats what passengers want.

You do realize that is up to the carriers not Boeing right? The carriers decide which seats and how many in what classes. Boeing just makes the plane itself. I is an evolution on how far it can take people on such a better fuel burn rate.
