Freddie did not destroy the band by leaving to do a solo album. In fact, he was the THIRD member to do a solo album. Roger Taylor Brian May had already done solo albums and returned to the band. When Freddie announced he would do a solo album it was understood by all bandmates that Freddie would return, so no one was mad as was portrayed in the film.

@@daisyperegrino6380 First, Freddie's solo album was recorded during 1983-1984 while Queen was on hiatus (i.e. - taking a break from recording/touring). Therefore, he didn't go to his bandmates and have a contentious meeting where his bandmates ended up hating him because he was destroying Queen as was portrayed in the film. Second, the reason most people who are part of a band do a solo album is to explore other musical styles that are not consistent with the vision of the band. Direct quote from Freddie, "I had a lot of ideas bursting to get out and there were a lot of musical territories I wanted to explore which I really couldn't do within Queen." Also, here is a quote from Brian May: Oddly Brian recently said his favorite scene in that movie is something that never even happened in reality. Sir Brian said: “My favourite moment is when Freddie is plucking up the courage to tell us he’s going off to do his solo album. It’s a wonderful piece of acting - and a lot of that wasn’t in the script. . . But we fought for that scene to stay in, because the realism of it is quite gut-wrenching. That was a difficult moment for us. It’s Freddie kinda leaving his family.” We all know Freddie had no intention of leaving Queen & never did. It took him so long to finish Mr. Bad Guy because he had Queen commitments that he put first.

As said elsewhere in comments; Great movie despite the inaccuracies. Guitarist Brian May has said of their Live Aid performance; "We did have an unfair advantage. We had done football stadiums. Freddie, particularly, learned this magical way of involving everybody. In a huge football stadium, he could make everybody feel that they were in contact.” It is also rumoured that as David Bowie walked past Freddie as he went on stage to follow Queen he said to Freddie "How the F' am I meant to follow that?" Another quote I have heard is "The greatest instrument Freddy could play was the audience." All of Queen are notable outside of music as well with Sir Brian May being a published astrophysicist that has work with NASA.

Great film but only *very* loosely based on facts. The most accurate things are the speaking voices for Freddie and especially Brian. Oh and the fact that John barely speaks ! Did you recognise the actor who plays John btw ? He was young Timmy in Jurassic Park.

There was a joke among the fandom that someone had gone back in time to 1979 and kidnapped the real Brian May to appear in this movie! His voice and appearance are so spot-on that even his own kids thought he dubbed it.

As with any biopic, there were things that were changed, exaggerated, time shifted, etc... There is an easy to read History vs Hollywood article on the movie that is well worth checking out. Nothing that was altered really lessens the impact of this movie much at all...IMHO, but you should make up your own mind. 👍

Paul Prenter actually died before Freddie did. People don't realize that there are many different strains of the AIDS virus, some way more aggressive and virulent than others, and unfortunately for Freddie, he had one of the worst. So it's very likely that he originally contracted it from Paul Prenter. (In fact, Jim Hutton lived on until 2011 and died of lung cancer completely unrelated to AIDS.) For comparison, basketball player Magic Johnson was diagnosed about the same time as Freddie, and not only is he still alive today, but he looks as healthy as a horse.

Well, AIDS itself isn't a virus, HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is actually 2 viruses that can result in someone developing AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. :) In fact, not all carriers are infected, some are just carriers. It was something else seeing Freddie's last performance, he was so frail, but still as radiant.

A lot of people are confused to learn that Freddie "only" left Jim Hutton $500,00 in his will (!!), but Jim was already HIV-positive by 1991, so Freddie probably assumed he would not be requiring millions for the few years he presumably had left. Jim actually returned to his hometown in Ireland, and used the money to buy a home there.

Remember Wayne's World?? Mike Myers' cameo in the movie was a nod to Wayne's World. Legend has it, the director of Wayne's World wanted to play a different song other than BoRhap. Mike Myers stood firmly and said no. They said yes. He threatened to quit. They caved because Mike Myers WAS Wayne's World. They sent Freddie a copy of the scene before he died and supposedly he loved it. When Myers says "a song teenagers can bang their heads to," that was a reference to the BoRhap scene in Wayne's World where the 5 of them banged their heads to the song.

Guys, you should go ahead and react to Queen at live aid. You can see how close the movie was or wasn't. The band never broke up or took an extensive break...a little creative licence. And, Freddy didn't get diagnosed unt 87, I think. They stopped touring after 86. 🙂

I believe Mary brought home their first cat when she and Freddie were a young couple. Mary did keep the cats as Freddie left her his estate (and partial royalties). She lived there until last year; the home is now for sale and Freddie's belongings were auctioned off by Sotheby's. Freddie's life and the story of Queen is interesting enough without the fake Hollywood dramatization.

This movie was very good, but not actually factually accurate. Freddie never left the group, they used to take breaks when they knew they needed to be away from each other for awhile, and Roger and Brian had more solo projects than Freddie in the early days until Freddie finally git his solo album done in 1986, it took a few YEARS because of his commitment to Queen. And towards the end of his life, they were super close. Freddie did an album for/with Montserrat Caballe’, a famous soprano opera singer., a dream of his. And he knew Roger and Brian before becoming part of the group, actually worked in a shop with Roger before that lead singer left and Freddie became part of the the group. They were going to just split up, but he was the driving force keeping them together those first five years. On an on it’s inaccurate, in fact, Freddie was very shy offstage. It was also the recording company that mentioned his teeth, or the manager. Thank God it didn’t keep him back. RIP you gorgeous person, being, soul, Freddie.

I've seen it described as a biographical jukebox musical drama and/or a musical fantasy. Why Broadway hasn't snapped this one up by now I don't know!!! Can't afford the costume budget?!!

Freddie did not have to come crawling back to the band so they could play Live Aid as was portrayed in the film. They were together and were actually doing a world tour when Bob Geldof announced Live Aid. Geldof (incorrectly) assumed that all British musicians would GLADLY perform for free at his charity event. Queen declined the offer because they were on the road for a year and wanted to go home and relax and spend time with their families. Geldof went on British TV and shamed all British musicians who declined to perform. Queen was scheduled for a 6:30pm timeslot because they and their type of rock music were not that popular in 1985. Since they were fresh off of a world tour they played with the energy a 2-hour Queen show in their 20+ minute Live Aid performance. All other musicians who performed before and after them gave a 10% effort because they were performing for free.

Mary was always the love of his life, and his heart. Freddy was the heart of Queen, but the heart of Freddy was ALWAYS Mary! It is wrong that he was entirely gay, because he was Trysexual. He had sex with both men and women. His appetite for drugs and sex unfortunately destroyed his relationship with Mary, who was just such a wonderful woman. Also he wasn't the only one that tried to break free from the band and do solo stuff. They all did. After the golden years they basically stopped hanging around with each other, having different circles of friends. So they basically just hung out when recording and performing, starting around the album "Hot Space". That is why both "The Works" and "The Miracle" are both lackluster albums. The performance at Live Aid did bring them back together again. From "A Kind of Miracle" album and on until Freddy's death, they were again re-united and kept up with each other until Freddy's death.

Queen is one of the best pop-rock bands ever. Bohemian Rhapsody is the first rock song I remember listening to. Freddie Mercury was an amazing frontman and singer, his vocal range covered 4 octaves, and this is a lot! He is greatly missed.

The world got revenge for Paul Prenter... in real life, his interview was written not on TV but Prenter was an actual person. He was like he's portrayed here... but the revenge: up until about 2021 if you Googled Paul Prenter, Google said he was a fictional character in the movie. For three years Prenter was delegated to the fictional world. Too bad they fixed it.

The press eas horrible,of course tabloids are awful. Many storiesabout Freddie. If I remember correctly it was announced that Freddie had AIDS; then a day or two later he died. Very sad day.

I liked this film, but I loved Dexter Fletcher’s (he was brought in to finish the film) next one, Rocketman. A much more warts and all affair than this, Taron Egerton was shamefully overlooked for awards as he was even better as Elton John than Rami was as Freddie.

The reason's the bands couldn't play life on top of the tops is because it was one song after another and they simply didn't have time to set up the equipment, sound check between songs. They did try it once, was disastrous.

I never liked this movie, I already disliked it the first time I saw it. The reason I think it's so bad is because I'm a hardcore Queen fan and have been all my life (play any song from any of their records and I'll instantly know which record it's from). That's why I'm just bothered by all the factual errors, how songs come in the wrong year and similar things that don't match reality (plus it's so obvious that the guy who plays Freddie Mercury doesn't sing a single note himself). A really good biographical drama film, on the other hand, is "La Bamba" about Ritchie Valens.

The 20th Century Fox fanfare was written and performed by Brian & Roger. That is the original Smile, Tim Staffell, Roger & Brian, reuniting to perform "Doin" Alright" in the opening scene. Tim went on to have a successful career in visual arts as a designer, sculptor, illustrator, animator and commercial director.

The way they won over the Live Aid crowd is even more remarkable when you remember that this wasn't a "Queen" crowd. They were an eclectic mix of music fans. Queen were not only considered past it by many but they also had the stigma of having broken the UN apartheid boycott by playing at Sun City in 1984 - even though they had insisted the crowd be racially integrated. So they were really up against it yet still came away having stole the show completely. The staging of the day in the film was *so* well done. On the BluRay release you can see they actually filmed the whole set but only uised a fraction in the feature. There are also YT comparisons that show how perfectly choreographed the movie and the archive footage was.

I don't know the accuracy of this interpretation of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' but I have seen a video that said it was Freddy's "Coming Out" song where he had come to accept who he was & decided to be who he was meant to be. The lines "Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, Pulled my trigger, now he's dead" refers to I have stopped pretending I am what I am not, from now I am a new man. With the lines "Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry, If I'm not back again this time tomorrow, Carry on, carry on, As if nothing really matters" meaning I didn't want to hurt you but I am who I am, please forgive me & if you can't it's not your fault, please get on with your life & don't worry about me.

RE: The scene on the early BBC appearance. My career was media. Mostly in TV, but I started in radio when I was a teen. One of my heroes was BBC DJ John Peel. You could catch replays of his domestic radio show in the US on BBC's shortwave service. When he started in the 1960s, the BBC had a rule that was meant to improve working conditions for union musicians - you couldn't play an artist's original recording, you had to hire someone else to play it. John's genius was that he'd hire * the actual band * at union scale wages to re-record their own songs, and he'd play those recordings instead. BBC had very strange rules about music performances back then. John's been gone for about 20yrs now, and music historians and archivists still marvel at how innovative his idea was. What a great movie! Rami won the Oscar for it. On the other hand, Rocket Man (A musical about Elton John) was also great, and Taron Egerton, who played EJ flawlessly, even sang everything himself. Sadly it was snubbed by the academy, received no nominations. It is well worth a watch, and Nick they have 2 poeple to hate.....his parents. God they were awful to him

This is a good movie, despite the massive inaccuracies. The movie is maybe 40 percent accurate and that is being generous. Nearly everything is wrong; how the band formed, the timeline songs were recorded, Queen had reunited a full year before live aid and had just finished a tour promoting their new album The Works, and perhaps the most egregious inaccuracy is that Freddie's AIDS diagnoses was two years after live aid and it was another two years after that that he told the band. Most of the inaccuracies in the movie are the direct result of Brian May, and Roger Taylor being executive producers of the movie, they wanted the movie to be more of a celebration of Queen's legacy than a factual story about the band. In fact it was this altered retelling the caused Sascha Baron Cohen to walk away from the role of Freddie Mercury. He had been working on getting this movie made for 6 years prior quitting because he wanted a warts and all story of Freddie and the band, but May and Taylor wanted the story to be about how the band overcame Freddie's bad behavior and persevered after his death.

Cohen stated that a "band member", (he wouldn't say who), expected that Freddie's death would occur in the middle of the movie then it was to play out with Queen carrying on. I believe it was a Howard Stern interview. I commend Brian and Roger for their commitment (and success) with Queen+ but I question their motives in approving certain obvious falsehoods for the movie.
