The scene @39:24 is personal for Emma Thompson. Her husband at the time, Kenneth Branagh, cheated on her with Helena Bonham Carter. Her emotion is real and not scripted. Alan Rickman said it wouldn't work without it.

The conclusion of Laura Linneys character is just another kind of love. She chose to care for her brother first.
@MZAH19866 күн бұрын
She should and that is what FAMILY is for, on the other hand, Karl Acted in a very stupid way, i think she should rethink he feelings for him, because if he acted like that in the beginning, he will leave her for the least argument or disagreement. All what want from Sarah is sex and when it get interrupted, he acted like a stupid teenager. Really glad that they show A Character with this manners because not every man is worthy man to have a family.

This film literally explores every facet of a relationship, from childhood crush, to "till death do us part," bromances, unrequited love, awkwardly missed connections, one-night-stands, and infidelity. And honestly, I'll never understand why the Lincoln-Knightly part is the one that people put out there most.
@shirleydurr4116 күн бұрын
The Lincoln-Knightly story is my least favorite. It doesn't connect well with the others.
@BouillaBased6 күн бұрын
@@shirleydurr411 Same here. If I had to choose one, it would be the "language barrier" story line. But each of the others have their own moments, like breaking down when she received a Joni Mitchell CD, then having to compose herself. That gets me every time.

It's nice to see that people can still watch this film and enjoy it for what it is. It has its problems, but that's no reason to completely bash it and overlook how ultimately sweet it is. Humans are messy, and this is the film to reflect that.

Still a all-time favourite to rewatch in December every year! Glad you enjoyed it too. And what a beautiful and touching performance of Emma Thompson as the wife who knows her husband has his eyes on someone else... It always gets me when she excuses herself and goes in the next room and tries not to cry after she opened her present and it's not the necklace.

I like that you understood the Claudia Schiffer cameo, it usually goes over most people's heads 🙂 Also, that you understood the dynamic between Andrew Lincoln and Keira Knightley at the end - most people just jump in and say that it's creepy or assume that the kiss meant that she liked him back, but it was just a chance for them both (well, mainly him) to clear the air and for him to say "yes, I have feelings for you but moving forward I'm going to be able to put them aside and hope that we can start afresh as friends" 🙂

Love that you immediately realized the one couple are body doubles. Took me years to catch on. The fact that Keira Knightly and Sam were only 3 or 4 years apart in age when this was filmed. I think he was 13, and she was 17, but I might be off a little with the ages.

I lost count of how many times I’ve seen this, watch it every Christmas Eve (followed by The Muppet Christmas Carol). It’s also fun spotting all the British TV and radio people, my favourite line in the whole thing is “Ant or Dec” cos my mum could not tell them apart, even though they stand the same way round every time and have done for the whole of their presenting career.

LOL...such a fun Christmas movie...I have watched quite a few times. One quick thing, in case nobody else mentions it, as you guessed Martin Freeman and Joanna Page were not playing p**n stars, they were actually playing stand ins for blocking purposes...they pretend to do things to set up the camera positions and framing and lighting setups for the scenes before the actual performers come in to be filmed. LOL

Love this movie. So many great actors and the intertwined storylines are so good. To see Alan Rickman in another kind of role, check out Sense and Sensibility (also with Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and pre-Titanic Kate Winslet). Four Weddings and a Funeral (again starring Hugh Grant) is another great romcom by Richard Curtis.

So glad to see you guys reacting to this movie. Definitely up there in my top 5. I ❤ anything that Alan Rickman is in. Don’t know if you’ve ever watched Snow Cake with Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver, but it’s well worth a watch. Not sure if you noticed in the film, but there was a blooper with Hugh Grants tie when he arrives at Downing St. He is wearing two different ties. Apparently they were filming and broke for lunch and Hugh changed out of his costume. When he went to get dressed to resume filming, they gave him the wrong tie to put on. No one noticed. The two ‘actors’, Martin Freeman, are stand ins for lighting checks etc.

Emma Thompson said she drew on her sadness at her marriage breakup to Kenneth Branagh in the crying scene. Colin Firth had almost the same experience with language when he met his ex wife Livia who was Italian. He wanted to ask her father for her hand but he didn’t speak English so Colin learnt some Italian.

To explain the bad "fat" jokes - the actress playing Natalie was at the time ridiculed by the press about gaining weight. The writers went out of their way to repeat these jokes to show how ridiculous is was and on top made her the love interest of the Prime Minister... and the President to make clear how gorgeous she was. BTW the scene when Emma Thompson confronts her husband was not in the original script but Alan Rickman insisted there has to be a confrontation and the husband has to face the consequences otherwise this storyline will not work properly. I always think it is kind of ironical that Alan plays the cheating husband while in real life he spend his whole life with the girl he fell in love as a teenager. I you want to see Alan Rickman in a romantic lead role - I would definitely recommend Sense and Sensibility from 1995 (again with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant and a very young Kate Winslet in her first big role) - it is considered one of the best Jane Austin adaptations. Another tip for am again completely different Alan Rickman is Snow Cake. Alan suggested Sigourney Weaver for the other main role of the movie (a part that I would never ever imagined her in) and he brought her aboard... and she was fantastic! They both were - as they carry practically the whole movie. It is such a beautiful, gentle movie and so terribly overlooked but I think it would be right up your alley.

It’s not addressed, and that’s probably because it would detract from the film, but I don’t think Daniel can keep custody of Sam this easily. Stepparents in the UK in this situation don’t usually have guardianship unless they have adopted the child or are named as guardian in a will. Though since the mum knew she was terminal this was probably sorted out.
@a.bertasso12986 күн бұрын
Liam Neeson could if Sam’s biological father had passed away and or he’d legally adopted him. Or there was a consensual unofficial or legal arrangement between the biological father and the stepfather father
@Andy-ju8bb6 күн бұрын
@ Unofficial agreement would not allow Sam to stay with Daniel. In the UK, stepparents have zero guardianship rights without a formal court order in place. Sam would be placed with grandparents or an aunt/uncle in that case.

I think Wisconsin represents average America…..and I mean that in a good way. Remember Colin said he could walk into any American bar and find beautiful girls. And this choice also reflects Colin’s perception, and often a general view from some countries, that American girls are beautiful and fun but not always terribly intelligent and will fall for accents. I lived in the international dorm in college. And that’s where I learned about this perception. It was more amusing than anything. And the movie just exaggerates it a bit and has a little fun with it. Just like with any perception or misperception…..once we can talk to people and get to know them, we get to see beyond the surface. Yikes…. I didn’t mean to go on and get all corny😊 🌽😊
