Freddie told the band he had AIDS in 1987 not during Live Aid in 1985. He continued to make albums until he could not do it anymore. Freddie made sure he had legacy in music not for having a deadly disease. After his death, Brian, John and Roger made sure to keep that legacy going along with Mary and his family.

They wanted to finish the movie after their performance in Live Aid, since it was a good example of the success they got at their prime. After that performance, a lot of other important things happened, and they showed some in the movie, but then it wasn't chronologically accurate. Unless you wanted to see Freddie's decreasing health and sad-as-hell death... Well, I guess I get it... they made an effort to end it with Freddie at his prime form, like we all remember him.

I'll be honest: I really like the way that Rami played this scene. On the one hand you can tell that Freddie, on some level, is scared about how much longer he has to live but on the other he's all "I don't care who hears me say that I'm scared, I've said it and from here on out the only thing I want to focus on is making music, not on how sick I am."

I think at this moment the band had fully forgiven Freddie for his misdeeds, and that they realised that it wasn’t just about him performing alongside them but that he wanted to make amends before he passes away. I particularly liked Roger’s reaction at hearing the news and then compliments Freddie to a point that he has forgotten the past arguments between them: “You’re a Legend Fred” (love that line).

It’s a film, never happened this way, there was never any break and they never got back together having “not played together in years”. Plus Freddie didn’t tell them openly like this, he just said “you know what’s wrong with me” or words to that effect, which they did just like everyone else at the time who saw his weight loss etc

sadly all this drama didn't happen in real life, which I found very distasteful. They didn't break up, they took a hiatus and it was amicable. They'd have fights in production but that was just their style. The movie didn't need this falsified drama to add to the impact of Freddie getting sick. They never had an argument or disagreement that put the band in jeopardy. but the "oh we need to sell how traumatic this is" bullshit you do.....the guy was one of the most famous musicians in the world and he's now contracted one of the deadliest diseases in the world at that time....we didn't need that.

Yes. Those wee moments are so brilliantly done and convey the depth of John’s shock and grief. Watch Freddie’s tribute concert, he was absolutely heartbroken. The ‘Dancing Deaky’ people talk about is gone, he looks lost. Something of John died with Freddie.
@CourtneyLachiver
@CourtneyLachiver Жыл бұрын
@@ElGibby from what I've heard, Johnny was so heartbroken and when Freddie died, he ended up retiring because he was too sad to play music without Freddie. The whole band had a wonderful friendship with him. I'm glad that Brian and Roger are continuing to play on for the world. Freddie would've wanted them to keep going. I sure hope Johnny is holding up okay.
@ElGibby

@@CourtneyLachiver yup, that’s exactly it. He felt there was no way he could do it without Freddie. And yep, what Bri and Roger are doing now with Adam is amazing. My ultimate dream come true would be for John to come back and rejoin the band, rejoin us fans, rejoin his Queen family that love him. But it’ll never happen. He seems to be happy enough living the quiet life with his family, AFAIK he and Veronica are still going strong and they have a load of grandbabies now (they did have 6 kids after all). Wee tangent here tho: how amazingly cool would it be to have JOHN DEACON as a granddad?! Or indeed any of our Queens 😁

That's what I've always hated the most about this film (well, there are multiple aspects but this was the cherry on top). It literally had the audacity to exploit Freddie's AIDS diagnosis simply for an emotional beat to bring the band together and then say it's the only treason why Freddie performed as well as he did at Live Aid. I long for a day the majority of the audience wakes up and realize how duped they were by this exploitative awards bait.

It's historically inaccurate but I think what they were actually going for was ~why~ Freddie did not want to talk about it. It's easy for us Queen fans, not so for beginners. @@jacechinea5870 Yes and No. They had to cram much of the real life events in the movie without jumping back and forth in timelines, which would have been confusing. This scene did not happen, however in real life, it did basically happen. Freddie did tell his band mates in 1989, but they just placed it here to keep the movie going. They were clever not to show Freddie with AIDS dying in pain, as this was something he didn't want public, so it's nice they kept it out of the movie, but still touching on the AIDS topic.

The main issue I always had with this movie is the liberties they took to give a dramatic story. Freddie didn't tell anybody about his having AIDS because he didn't have it at this period. He contracted HIV in the mid 80's and kept it a secret from everyone including his bandmates until his illness became too apparent to hide. While this telling of the story is amazing in it's own right and gives the most satisfying ending, I really wish they hadn't left out or altered their story for the sake of the movie.

@EOTA564
@EOTA564 Жыл бұрын
We don’t know how/when he contracted it. He likely had sexual contact with multiple partners who were HIV carriers. But he didn’t find out for certain until 1987 when he returned home from a holiday in Japan. By this point he had symptoms of AIDS. I seem to recall hearing that he had an earlier positive test when he was still healthy but this was at a time when tests were unreliable.
@kevinskipp2762
@kevinskipp2762 8 ай бұрын
Nobody knows exactly when he got HIV, but mid 80s is definitely not accurate. It’s when he started becoming ill, but HIV was probably contracted around 1980 to 1982, maybe 1979 even. He was basically resident in NYC 80 to 82 and visiting the bath houses regularly. There is no way he got through those two years without contracting it and it takes a few years before it affects your health where it is obvious to others around you. Everyone became suspicious in 87 when his health was failing and weight loss really started but even the band weren’t ever really told. He just told them “you know what’s wrong with me”. Think that was very late when everyone really did know.

Freddie lived as he did, playing to the beat of his own drum. Yet while it is sad that when individuals with great talent are brought into this world, we have to appreciate the time, no matter how long or how short we have to spend with them, because no matter what way you want to look at it; mortality is the universal constant is what we all have in common; because it's what we do with our short time in this world, the many individuals we encounter, or don't encounter, the life or lives we help for better or worse is really what matters most; and people like Freddie made such an impact on the lives he knew personally, and the lives he inspired by the music he and his band mates made on millions around the world through the decades is a gift he left for us to cherish for years to come. God speed Freddie, and may you rock the Heavens from here to eternity.

This is something that tends to separate people. How one sees their death. Some just lament the time they have left, others do things that they never done before. Then there are people like Freddie who say 'fuck it' and just continue on without a care in the world. He wanted to sing, he did not want sympathy, condolences or being a poster boy for anything. All he wanted to do was stand up on that stage, say fuck it to aids and sing because that's how he wanted to go out. How he wanted to be remembered was on a bed dying, not spouting pleas for help. He wanted to be the one standing on the stage, singing for all. He is and always will be a legend.

A sequel would be sad as hell,but,there are some amazing stories about his tenacity and feverish work ethic. They could cover the Magic Tour,his work with Montserrat Caballe,The Great Pretender,The Miracle,recording Innuendo (at this point in the movie he would look really ill),and you could end the movie with the last thing he ever sang..Mother Love. When he said he couldn't do any more work on it and would be back after a rest,and never came back. That's why Brian sings the last verse of that song :(

Deacy crying, pretty sure he took Freddie’s death harder than anyone. That’s actually the reason why he left the band.
