Thanks Graham, I've not had the chance to hold in my hands a Riverdale boiler but have looked closely at details and photos on the web and think it's a well thought out design. I particularly like the damper idea. I so ofter see coal fired engines blowing off steam whilst they are running which is a waste of coal. If the damper controls the heat of the fire without it going out, great.

As a complete novice on steam locos, I'm finding your videos well presented and very informative. Do you think a novice should attempt this scale or something larger? Thanks

Hi Matt, small engines are much easier to build that bigger ones. If I were you I'd look at getting parts from Roundhouse Engineering. You can buy a complete kit for an engine or individual parts as you need them. They are very helpful with advice, even give you dimensions and drawings to make your own chassis for instance. You can buy wheels, axles, cylinders and valve gear to start. They have brochures of how to assemble and time this. You'll learn a lot about engines. Check out their website: www.roundhouse-eng.com/

Thanks - I'm fairly proficient at model engineering - just not locos! Plenty of reading to be done! Will check the site....

Mud ring is, as you know, an American term. I just hope I don't collet too much mud on my foundation ring.
