Dang, I think you guys talked over one of the best lines in this episode! At the end of his trip with Charlotte (the deer) he says to her “what are you thinking about?” And she says “oh... just how nice it could have been if you HAD chosen this life” That line always hits me.

I had just gotten my DUI when I saw this episode for the first time. I broke down crying in the shower before work, thinking about how I could have chosen to move across the country with my parents and instead chose to stay behind with my brother and friends leading to me partying too hard and fucking up. I felt I had made the wrong decision. 2 years later and things are ok x) I love this episode, it made me fall in love with the series.

The first season has a really great way of easing people into what the show really is about. The first few episodes are (mostly) pure comedy, then they start throwing in the absurdist points and the real negativity starts to creep in. One thing that people love to say about this show (without spoiling anything) is that it's a nihilistic show. It is NOT nihilist. Really, it's anything but that.
@harishariharan7664
@harishariharan7664 4 жыл бұрын
yep... those people have entirely missed the point
@captasticts8419
@captasticts8419 4 жыл бұрын
of course it is nihilistic. it deals with a lot of issues related or even caused by nihilism. just because the message the show eventually tries to tell you is NOT nihilistic does not mean that the show wasn't covering mostly nihilistic topics up to that point. also, the message in the end is, if we wanna be precise, optimistic nihilism too. but "nihilism" seems to have 2 different meanings in today's culture anyway so i don't think it's worth to discuss such semantics.
@lacabra1279
@lacabra1279 4 жыл бұрын
I find the show to be pretty nihilistic, giving you examples time after time of how nothing ultimately matters, there is not a cosmic point or reason for anythinh and we are the choices we make, that's it. Responsible for our actions in a lonely universe that doesn't even care.

Great discussion as always. However, there comes a point where you can no longer blame your crappy actions on childhood trauma. Not to mention passing on that trauma to other kids (Sarah Lynn) and allowing the cycle to continue. Bojack always has to blame something or someone, rather than take responsibility for his actions.

@sam mayne immediate gratification is usually the answer to the first. It's hard to leave with the knowledge that your actions drag down those you love and that you might be an active part of their suffering so many deflect. For example, he wants to keep tod close but at the cost of tod's happiness. People, in general, think with their emotions first which while that is good for empathy, it's pretty selfish since your emotions prioritize you in any given moment. so no matter how fucked up the thing you did is your emotions will first validate themselves. Taking responsibility requires you to set all that aside and take what you've done at face value and say that was you. Doing the right thing requires that you not only feel that it's worth it to help others but also feel like take steps that might be completely detrimental to yourself.

I hate to be that person but... I think you should take the crazy scene more seriously, this show is not supposed to be always funny, it's actually very serious and I think by talking you miss some important sentences. Everything has been thought in detail and those trips are actually impotant to understand Bojack's mind and his fears. This show literally changed my life and got me out of an addiction so I'm really passionate about it. But I guess you'll understand what I mean the more you watch it.

Someone should’ve warned y’all. And every season follows this basic format, get ready for every 11th episode, they’re emotional roller-coasters. Don’t know if y’all noticed or not, but during that awful silent pause after BoJack asks Diane to tell him he’s good they play a faint sound cue of Harper (imaginary daughter) laughing. Like his last memory of her is fading. It shatters my soul every time I hear it, probably the best sound cue in tv history.

I disagree that Bojack acknowledging his flaws is inherently a step in the right direction. In the real world we all know things that we don't like about ourselves, but some people never overcome that drug addiction, or that mental disorder, or just treating the people around them poorly.
@sertu1462
@sertu1462 4 жыл бұрын
I find it quite funny that you bring up addiction, since aknowledging that you have an addiction is pretty much the first step in the 12 step program (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_program#Twelve_Steps ). Being aware of your flaws is already more than some peaple are ready to, so yes, acknowledging your flaws is a step in the right direction, in my opinion.
