The facts in your explanation have been the most useful in ALL (100+) videos I have watched on this issue. How may I repay you for your efforts?

A really intelligent explanation of shutter mechanisms. Really appreciated.

Electronic shutter is the future, but there are issues with it that require better technology to resolve. EFCS was devised as a kind of stop gap until sensor design reached that point. We're _starting_ to get there, with cameras like the Z9 eschewing the mechanical shutter all together. Soon I think we'll see sensor readouts get so fast that mechanical shutters won't be put on anything except the cheapest cameras. The higher end cameras will almost certainly eventually get global shutters which eliminate all issues intrinsic with a rolling shutter (banding, the jello effect, etc).

I was trying to understand this and at 4:09 I finally got it! Thanks for this explanation!
@PeterSz732 жыл бұрын
That logic you explained at the end of the video is so simple, it should be built into every camera with EFCS function. Use EFCS when it is not degrading the picture, turn it off when it is a problem. Really besides the fast shutter speed, large aperture should be monitored as well if I understood you correctly. Above 2.8 any shutter speed would be fine right? At 2.8 1/4000 or faster is no good.

Canon R5 user here. Also still have Fuji X-H1 which does have the choice of EFC until 1/2000, MS faster than 1/2000, ES faster than 1/8000 (goes to 1/32000!). If Fuji can do it, Canon and Sony should be able to do it. This would be great if Canon would implement this because MS with a SS of 1/60 to 1/160 gives a slight blur whereas ES or EFC at these speeds does not.

Nice explanation, Thank you. But I think the automated system you mentioned at the end does exist in Fuji cameras. It's a nice feature to have.

With your demo with the dollars, wouldn't EFCS solve that, as there is no first mechanical shutter? You explained the mechanism so well and I learned something. But, I don't get how EFCS would be bad compared to mechanical.
@CharlieVN10 ай бұрын
4:07 is the EFCS dillema, think of the dollar on the right to be the electronic shutter (equal plane as the sensor), the one on the left is the second mechanical curtain, on a different plane above the sensor. Full mechanical shutter (and full electronic shutter) would not be possible to overlap and cast a shadow on each other since they are on the same plane and can never touch.

It's a strange... feature indeed. If shutter shake is a thing, we can just increase the shutter speed, or make it heavier with a rig/tripod right? I was so tempted to get the A7C, but the EFCS can't be turned off, which made it a dealbreaker. So this basically means the A7C can only shoot up to 1/2000 technically, if I want perfect images, which is worse performance than the basic standard of 1/4000.

@@SangsakaCreative Yep. And that's too limiting for me. I'm not sure why Sony only installed half a shutter. If Sony had something like the Nikon Z5 it would be better.

@CharlieVN3 жыл бұрын
It’s the only 2.8 uwa zoom for aps-c and if anything like the 17-28, then it’ll be great. If you have an aps-c body only, worth a consideration. When it comes to UWA zooms vs standard zooms, I tend to consider both acceptable as standard zooms.
