These are handmade bokken and saya for the art of iaido and kenjutsu. They are fully functional and built very tough to withstand the rigors of kumi iai and kumi tachi. This video was made by my client O.T. Ray Vizza, who has given me permission to post this on my channel. Thanks brother.

Very nice work, Yours make the bokken and saya that I own pale in comparison (the ones I own are mass produced (and boy, does it show)), whereas yours are done with a passion that shows of the true craftsmanship of his work. It's nice to see your son take an interest, he seems very at ease with the tools.

Thanks for checking out my video. Brazilian panacoco has a Janka hardness of 3700 lb/in2 and a rupture strength of 29,000 lb. In relation to American hickory or Japanese white oak, panacoco is twice as strong. Added with a tri-laminate construction and traditional mortise and wedge joinery, the tsuba is quite solid.

Its clear that the maker of these bokken has put a lot of stock, as well as time and experience into ensuring the durability of these beautiful training weapons. That said, I think people on the fence about buying bokken for $400 and higher would benefit from a video demonstrating their long term durability after many training sessions at the dojo.

I've seen these bokken on etsy. Wonderful work but out of my price range for a bokuto. Unfortunately I can't say I will ever buy one unless you start listing them at around 100. I train daily but there's no way I can pay as much for a wood sword as I do for live blades. Chose the wrong career for such luxuries. I can't help but wonder how much of the price is due to the wood type. Many types of wood are very expensive. Which sucks because they sure are free to cut the trees down.
@MrJustdinh

Thanks for checking out my work. The value of my bokken is that the are very tough and fully functional (weight and balance) with a blade geometry that allows for the same practice as with a steel blade (blade alignment). The advantage is that you can practice kumitachi or kumi iai more safely with a partner. This is what you would expect in formal swordsmanship practice.

Point taken. Cheap Bamboo bokken only have the curve of a katana that's about it. Still more than I can afford for wood though. That said, I'd still love to have a three set daisho of them. My next weapon buy is going to be for a T10 blade. 99% Most likely from shintogo. I like the bat katana they make.

that's easily the fanciest bokken I've ever seen. I have two bokken, one crappy old one I take to the dojo, it has numerous dents along the blade and side from impact work with a partner, cheapest possible bokken that wouldn't break or shatter on impact, I also have a slightly fancier one, made of a more ornate piece of hardwood, I'd never dream of taking it to training, instead I use it for solitary practice, solo drills and other applications where it sees absolutely no impact. I'd suggest these bokken are intended for the latter use. Personally, I'd never use a bokken that nice for impact work with a partner, it's just a great way to ruin a superb piece of workmanship, if I needed a saya, it'd be the cheap, crappy plastic type from ebay. A really beautifully carved bokken and saya like that would be much better employed as an aid in practicing draws, drills and techniques alone where it isn't going to get smashed around, that way, it'll last a lifetime and remain the thing of beauty it is indefinitely. ANY bokken, no matter how durable, how well made and no matter what material it's made from will eventually look like the dog has chewed it if it's used for impact work.

+Some Guy Thank you. I use it primarily for the reason that it is accurate in weight, balance and geometry. It has become an essential part of my iai, kumi iai and kumi tachi practice.
@MrJustdinh
@MrJustdinh 8 жыл бұрын
I have been using Brazilian panacoco bokken regularly for very hard contact kumi practice against other hardwoods and it looks nothing like a dog chewed on it. In fact, it shows very little wearing or denting. I train in a traditional koryu where hard kumi practice is a regular part of our training. Because I speak from experience, I can speak with confidence.

The craftmanship looks excellent, but I worry about the origin of the wood: I doubt, that it could be ecologically friendly! Oak would have been a more integrous material choice.
