Also, Laissez-Faire is unique amongst the economies, because it gives capitalists the power to destroy closed factories, preventing them from filling up the state's factory slots with closed factories (up 'till 6/8 until quite late in the game; HPM's (and I bet vanilla's) AI is reluctant to build more). In fact, I'd say it was specifically because Bo subsidized inefficient factories under Interventionism that they all closed once they shifted to Laissez-Faire. I mean, just look at that ammunition factory - Level 42? In 1890? Really? Why? This is basically like the economic depression Russia experienced IRL in 1992 once the Soviet-style Planned Economy collapsed. The only real problems with a Laissez-Faire economy is the limit on taxing pops to no more than 50%, which means that a government that spends a lot of money (on, say, the Army, the Navy, and, in Bo's case, on Overseas maintenance) needs to increase tariffs, which make factories less profitable (and, thus, easier to bankrupt) due to a higher input cost.

They couldn't retreat back to France without going through a German army, so the pathfinding looked for the closest friendly province that didn't require going through a german army - which just so happened to be in Russia

No, I think what happened was a missclick. Mainly because I've done pretty much the same thing a few times. I think what happened was Braun had his army that was fighting in the battle selected and tried to open the diplomacy screen of Russia by rightclicking on them. But because he had his army that was fighting selected, instead of opening the diplomacy screen, he ordered his entire army in that battle to retreat to Russia leading to them just leaving the battle and walking all the way to Russia.

In fairness to the Russian player in that first game, a weakened Germany (and slightly strengthened Austria) WOULD be in Russia's best interest. A slightly strengthened Austria would not be a major threat to Russia because Austria would nerfed by having to deal with the internal threat of nationalism, which would be tearing the old Empire apart so the Austrians wouldn't have any ambition for big territorial aggrandizement against Russia, unlike a strong German Empire. In this scenario Russia would cede management of the Central European geopolitical situation to a relatively "weak" Austria in order to focus on other fronts and on internal development. One only has to look at what happened when Russia got involved in European conflicts during the Vicky timeline historically to see the benefits of Russia staying out of European affairs. The got involved twice and lost twice. Mind you this assumes the Russian player isn't a complete jackass, but still, his logic isn't without SOME merit.
