Once again, the only storyline that actually works (Macy/Thorne) is treated as an afterthought next to the disastrous one (Brooke/Ridge/Taylor). Yet, funnily enough, the show's popularity really surged when Bobbie Eakes and Jeff Trachta started coming out with albums and doing concert tours. Brad Bell always underestimated Macy and Thorne as characters, and their portayers.

I agree - in fact I remember when the show had a special "milestone episode" (was it the 7000th episode?), they reminisced on how popular the show was in the 90s and bragged about how they did a sold out concert in that Rotterdam stadium, and they managed to do that whole segment without showing Thorne and Macy, or even mentioning the characters or their portrayers by name. It was mainly BE and JT's concert and they got no credit at all and were omitted from the footage from the concert in that episode. That spoke volumes. And this is also apparent in how most of the singing storyline is written, completely islanded with a minimum of scenes (something like one Thorne/Macy studio scene every two weeks and almost no development of Sally/Macy, Thorne/Ivana or Macy/Anthony) while the honeymoon scenes with Ridge, Brooke, Taylor and Omar in Morocco go on and on and on...

*FLATTENING THE CHARACTERS* I've written before about how Brad Bell will flatten and ruin these characters and you're already starting to see hints of it here. He's so anxious to get from one plot point to the next (Taylor's alive! Get Ridge & Brooke down the aisle!) that he's sacrificing important character and story beats. All the tension between Beth and Brooke over Eric is gone, Eric has no unresolved feeling for Brooke, and Eric Jr is happy that his brother is marrying his mother! All the opposition to the marriage is being reduced to the Stephanie vs Brooke feud when there are actually more complicated dynamics that could play out. The point when you do storylines like this isn't to smooth over all the rough edges but rather to hang individual characterizations and story beats on those rough edges. That's what Bill Bell would've done. When Eric and Brooke were getting married for instance, Ridge/Felicia/Thorne vacillated between supporting their father and encouraging their mother in trying to get him back. The same should be happening here. Eric SHOULD have misgivings about his son marrying his ex (which could lead to more tension with Sheila). Eric Jr SHOULD throw a dinosaur at his mother for marrying his brother (which could raise the mystery of Bridget's paternity). That doesn't mean Ridge & Brooke can't be together (it's a soap, icky family drama is par for the course) but you should let the characterizations breathe and play out rather than steamrolling them so you can drive from one plot point to the next.

Eric loves Brooke but never admits his wrong in going after Ridge's ex. Not resolving this makes him look as shallow as he is. Thorne had his mourning period when Ridge took Caroline. But Eric seems so giddy for Ridge and Brooke. It's gross.

And the thing is, this part of the storyline (Ridge and Brooke's wedding) *did not need* to be rushed. Taylor could easily have been allowed to recover "at the speed of the plot" - if more time was needed in LA to let certain story beats play out, Taylor's gradual recovery could have happened more slowly with just the occasional scene to remind us that she's there. Instead the show gives Taylor a miraculously quick recovery and the rest of the plot is struggling to keep up with that pace.

I love how that little musical phrase at 19:19 (when Stephanie and Brooke look at each other) is always used to signal "unresolved doubts". I have referred to it before as the "Unanswered Question" motif, because it is _extremely_ similar to the solo theme of American composer Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question" (if you are interested, check it out - the piece is only 4 minutes long and the theme is instantly recognizable). Not only is this theme in B&B virtually a quotation of Ives' theme musically speaking, but the _meaning_ is also pretty much the same - an important question that remains unanswered. I think the B&B composers, if they are classically trained, would definitely be familiar with this piece of music as it is part of the standard curriculum in "classical" music history, so the use of this theme is probably not coincidental.

So, Stephanie is seeing more and more how volatile, manuiplative, mean, disrespectful, selfish, narcissistic, self centered, sluty and bad brooke is. So, she wants better for her son. And she is right about that. She has seen many times how much pain and damage Brooke cost herself and her family. She also sees how weird, disgusting and gross it's that her son is marry his father's ex wife. And stephanie was not supported of cridge after Caroline was with throne. She was opposite to that. And not really of bridge either. She would have preferred that rigde would have dated someone else. And stephanie only support brigde when Brooke was with Eric, because Brooke suggested that to her (it was Brooke who convinced stephanie of trying it) and wanted out of that marriage and hoped if stephanie would get back with Eric it would happen quicker. Brooke was and will never be good for rigde or anyone. She is an infectious disease. I have never met any mother who would have been thrilled her son marring the ex prostitute of his father.

The running theme of "intercepted letters" continues! Once again, Macy _records a tape_ in order to take control of her own life. It fits with the theme of Macy's "voice-oriented" character that she consistently chooses a sounding medium rather than a written medium as a way of trying to control the plot. And once again, _something happens_ and the tape does not reach its destination as intended. The last time, Bill Spencer intercepted the tape and replaced it with an empty one. This time, _fate_ intervenes (in another example of Nick's "Chance vs Design" theme) and "replaces" the _contents_ of the tape. Macy intends to give the record company a demo tape of herself singing, but accidentally (because she was in a hurry) gives them a tape that also has _her and Thorne_ singing. And just like before, this unintended complication involving a tape recording completely changes the course of Macy's life. Two of the most defining traits of Macy's character, as well as her high and low point respectively, her singing career and her alcoholism, are *both* set in motion by a "switch" of tape recordings.

She lies, steals and manipulates if it suits her.

@@TriniT21You are correct. It was Eric's accident that turned the tables. When Ridge decided he wanted to be with Brooke and they thought Eric was in love with Sttephanie, he was turning Taylor away. She was meeting him for dinner, dropping by the office. She was in love with him. But after Eric had the accident Ridge felt guilty. Taylor was single and ready to mingle. Brooke was married to his father and still Ridge's choice over Taylor. Eric's blindness changed everything. He didn't sleep with Taylor when he was pursuing married Brooke. He had already slept with Taylor when she was play engaged to Storm and messing around with her ex husband.

B4 that Ridge felt bad to break up his dad's marriage esp when he saw Brooke, Eric and Eric Jr as a family (which was Eric's exact plan why he invited Ridge over for dinner).. So Ridge chose Taylor (as opposed to just staying single lol) but then even afer his marriage to her he had many opportunities to leave his marriage for Brooke when Eric was no longer a factor (esp after the paternity test when Eric married Sheila) but he stayed with his wife Taylor and was committed to making it work when she died.
