I really enjoy watching Kimberlin Brown act...even tho they started to make her a cartoon villain from now, she still has the acting chops I think to make Sheila an interesting character to watch. The way she went from sultry voice on the phone to instant mama bear voice and face when Erica told her what happened. Flawless

ITA Trish. Kimberlin Brown's performance is still compelling even if the writing isn't as good anymore. I have to say too I think the directing and production values are also helping to accentuate her performance because those aspects are still strong in these 2002 episodes (look at the set design of that restaurant - it _feels_ real and lived in). I saw some scenes with Sheila's 2024 return to the show and the lack of good directing and production design unfortunately makes it hard to enjoy even her acting. You can't appreciate _anyone's_ performance really when you don't have camera angles or closeups or moody background music. One glance at 2024 and I'm suddenly willing to forgive the bad writing in 2002 because at least the show still LOOKS good.
@annieo65272 ай бұрын
Yes! Kimberlin Brown's acting, and the production values, really make her scenes work even when the writing is nowhere near as good as it used to be. And @Nick, I absolutely agree about the 2024 episodes. The lack of storytelling through direction, music and camera angles makes it impossible to enjoy even a good performance because there is nothing to support it (least of all the writing). I have even stopped watching the current episodes in spite of Kimberlin Brown being on the show because even she can't save it anymore when everything else works against her acting.
@leviaj12 ай бұрын
@@annieo6527and @nick, you both touch on a very important point. Despite all the issues we've identified with the writing in these 2002 episodes, the production values and the performances still made them watchable. There's also the fact that although there are major inconsistencies in the writing, the characters themselves feel "lived in". Even when they're retconned, there's still a connection to their past history and they still feel somewhat like the characters we were first introduced to. From 2019 onwards, the show completely lost its way. The production values are shabby, the music cues are bland and the writing is at elementary school level. Because Brad continues to be uninterested in long form storytelling, the characters just keep getting reinvented to suit the requirements of each storyline. They are largely disconnected from their respective histories and exist more as plot devices than people. Because the characters are so disconnected, it's actually difficult to turn in a good performance. An actor can't play a character effectively when the writing doesn't allow them to have an awareness of the character's history. Needless to say, I've also stopped watching. I just read recaps to see if it ever gets any better (and it doesn't). Many of the cast members even admit to being mortified by the material they're given to play. I mean KB is playing Sheila as a happily married waitress😱. So yeah, 2002 episodes are a masterpiece in comparison.

@@annieo6527 BTW Annie I was thinking of how this also relates to our mutual love of the Disney Renaissance films. Take a film like _Pocahontas_ where the writing isn't as good as _Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast_ or _Aladdin._ The characters are flat, the villain is uninteresting and the story itself doesn't have much of an arc. And yet if you watch the film now, it still looks and sounds amazing especially compared lot of Disney films today. The hand-drawn animation is absolutely gorgeous (the "Colors of the Wind" sequence is one of the most beautiful scenes they've ever done) and the music is lush and stirring. All of those those visual and aural elements make up for the poor writing and it's the same thing with these late 90's/early 2000's B&B episodes.
@annieo65272 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 great comparison! Yes, I agree. The more recent Disney films feel less "lived in" because the characters are almost always genre aware and, in a way, not taking themselves or the story seriously. This makes them less connected to myths and archetypes because they _make fun_ of those tropes, not realizing that they are meant to be symbolic rather than literal. (For example, Frozen with the "you can't marry a man you just met" theme and the subversion of the "kiss of true love" trope.)
