The scene with Thorne and Macy is another example of the parallels between Caroline's death and Taylor's death. After Caroline's death, Macy wrote a letter offering her condolences to Thorne even though the two of them had broken off their engagement at the time and were estranged. This time, they are divorced and again Macy reaches out to Thorne and offers her condolences to his family. And both times, the tragic death of Ridge's wife, and Macy's sympathetic gesture in response to it, are a first step towards leading Thorne and Macy back into each other's orbits and making them reevaluate their relationship.

*JAMES IS THE NEW BLAKE* Returning to my theory of narrative control, Stephanie is trying to arrange the plot without James (ordering him to stay away from her family) but he attempts to narrate a place for himself in that plot that could benefit Stephanie (taking Brooke off her hands). The show is clearly trying to make James a Storyteller and often this is done by putting a character in conflict with Stephanie (think Sheila, Sally, Brooke, Connor). But James is trying a different tactic: he wants to ingratiate himself with Stephanie and be her ally instead of her rival. And indeed they will soon be on the same side, trying to move the plot in the same direction with James attempting to marry Brooke, James attempting to destroy Sheila, and James attempting to bring Taylor back home - all outcomes that Stephanie wants. In this way James is like an updated version of Blake i.e. a mysterious man from her past who's in love with Taylor and who enjoys plotting and strategizing with Stephanie. And indeed just as Blake brought Ridge's first wife back from the dead (going to Texas to find Caroline's twin), James will also bring Ridge's second wife back from the dead (going to Morocco to find Taylor).

From what I know about the show, a Karen-Ridge relationship never took off. It's surprising because Johanna Johnson (think I got the actress name correctly) and Ronn Moss had great chemistry.
