*SETTING UP SHEILA'S SEDUCTION* Even though I'm not a fan of Brad Bell's writing and I think the show is already deteriorating under his regime, there are still individual episodes here and there that are well-structured. This is likely because other writers and directors from Bill Bell's regime are still around. So for instance, Sheila's seduction of Eric is set up well by the show's two strongest Storytellers. First Sheila lays out the stakes of her seduction to the viewer via Mike (wanting to have a baby with Eric so she can have financial security). Then Stephanie "reads" the story for the viewer by intuiting that Eric and Sheila are not intimate and by letting the viewer know that Eric is amorous and randy. These earlier setups then pay off when Eric finally gives in to his desire and succumbs to Sheila's seduction. In one episode the viewer is told a clear and complete story with an ending that's justified by what came before.

@@NewYorkNick0607great analysis! I watched this episode b4 reading your comment and I said to myself.. This has to be the best epi in a while, as it threw me back to familiar characters doing what they do best. I have said it before, but Macy and Anthony have a very strange vibe going on. Like they are drawn to each other physically but repel each other mentally. They find each other attractive but don't actually seem to understand each other or connect on a deeper level.
@NewYorkNick0607 Жыл бұрын
Great observation Annie. In this way, using the "language" of romantic dramas, Anthony is clearly coded as the villain and his relationship with Macy coded as "bad." Because in this genre, sex and physical attraction is suspect or immoral if it's not paired with an emotional/intellectual connection. So Macy and Anthony only having this carnal charge between them is like the Michael Douglas/Glenn Close relationship in Fatal Attraction.
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 that's an interesting read, and I think you are right! It's a little odd how this genre adds these moral implications to s ex with and without a deeper connection, but there it is. And following that interpretation, the show positions Anthony as "Bad" and Macy as "Good" by having him desire physical love and not really care about mutual understanding, while she rejects that idea and wants to build an emotional connection while postponing the physical intimacy. This also supports my interpretation that they have never slept together (and never will), because of this fundamental incompatibility in moral alignment. They are incapable of "togetherness" because the characters don't play by the same rules.

There it is again - the connection between tape recordings and Macy's attempts to take control of her own life! It really is a recurring theme with this character that she uses _recorded sound_ (rather than letters like other characters would) whenever she tries to actively shape the plot. She did it before in 1992 (the taped message to Thorne that Bill intercepted) and she will do it again in 1995. And of course it is very fitting since the concept of "voice" is so central to this character. And, interestingly, every single time she does this _something unexpected happens involving the tape,_ showing how despite her best intentions, Macy is _not_ in control of the plot.
