The proper way of unlocking Nen is through meditation. Wing said, that a genius can do that in about 6 month wich is the time that Leorio needed to do so. Leorio however focused on studying medizin. So the "unlocking" Nen" stuff is just a low priority thing he did on the side. We cant compare his skills with the others here, because they all took the "quick and dirty" approach of learning Nen while also focusing their entire time on becoming stronger. Since so many people dont seem to understand the "skill levels" in this season I also want to point out that Kurapika trained Nen for 6 month now. Gon and Killua unlocked their Nen 6 month ago, but Wing forced them to do a 2 month training break after Gon got his arm broken. So Gon and Killua only trained Nen for 4 month now. Of cause Kurapika has the best mastery over Nen at this point. He had 50% more training time than Gon and Killua. Of cause Leorio is the most behind. He doesnt care and just started. I dont like how in this adaptation Leorio is portrayed as far less capable than he actually is. In the original version he opend the second testing gate at Killuas place, before Gon was able to open the first one. If it is about strength alone Leorio is more than two times stronger than Gon. Dont underestimate him!

Yep, in the first few episodes of 2011 you can see Leorio occasionally handle shit like a true Hunter, but for some reason they decided to nerf him and only leave the comedy relief aspects. At this point, ignoring Nen, Leorio is physically stronger than Kurapika and Gon.

When you say original version you mean the old anime? Because then it could be non canon since that anime changed some things from the manga (Or at least that's what the comments i read say), i never read the manga nor watch the old anime so i have no idea if is canon or not but it could be non canon if it never happened in the manga. Though i wouldn't mind if Leorio was physically stronger than Gon since he's older and also actually a good fighter too (Hisoka himself recognized Leorio, that fact by itself says it all), but of course even if he really had Gon's potential he would never be able to be as strong as Gon, Why? Because Leorio doesn't want to be a strong Hunter, he wants to be a doctor, his path is very different from Gon's, he has no reason to focus on training when he could be saving patients lives.

he didn't, if you remember well every hunter that didn't know nen yet had a teacher assign to them, it is implied that the teacher could refuse to trained them, but leorio is the only one it wouldn't make sense to refuse, evryone talk about how nice he is
