A very interesting compilation. A few meters away from my house there was a level crossing with one of the most crowded main lines. It was closed 10 to 14 hours a day and often you had to wait 20 to 25 minutes. Now there is a tunnel and no one in our neighbourhood had a kind of document like this of what it was before.

It never ceases to amaze me what lengths road vehicle drivers will go to just to avoid waiting at a level crossing. I live very close to a locally well known level crossing in Portslade near Brighton and some people will drive some way out of their way to avoid it when, if they had stayed where they are in the queue would probably have got to their destination in exactly the same time!

With regards to a sign saying that if a train has gone passed another train is coming, those have never existed at full barrier crossings such as these (which are always manually controlled although some remotely from a signal box some distance away using CCTV). Automatic half barrier level crossings still have one (e.g. in the frequently seen TV advertisement) and this is because a frequent cause of people zig-zagging at such crossings is the barriers staying down after a train has gone by.

Thanks. Its just that in the present technological age more and better real-time information allows waiting road users to understand whats going on, in the process helping reduce frustration of the type which induces road rage. When motorists zig zag half barriers they usually know the risks but are so frustrated by the delay that they see the delay as being of a greater significance. Of course they are putting themselves in danger; but all they want is to continue their journey asap.

And named after Bollo Brook which now runs underground from near the Acton Depot down to the Thames at Chiswick Reach via Chiswick House, below the lake.

nice, please try to filming more about this crossings, cose it is vrry curios combination...

I agree entirely, I don't see any reason at all why full barrier level crossings shouldn't likewise have a sign stating that if the lights continue to show another train is coming.

I really wish I could do one of these contrasts for Ware level crossing. It had very similar barriers to this crossing in the 1990s, and a much louder alarm.

There's ads that need to be shown in the UK, with the message "if you tie, YOU LOSE" (seen some great ones here in North America.......about why you shouldn't race a train to the crossing). And people need to realize....a) trains are faster than they appear....b) they can't swerve at the last second to avoid hitting you....c) even the lightest passenger trains with the best brakes need the distance of a few football pitches to stop.

The original level crossings here (the one(s) filmed in the 90's) were better!

Excellent video. Do the class 378 5 car trains run past this and between 7:37 and 8:20 was that Bitter Sweet Symphony by Verve?

Thanks:-) Yes, nowadays the service only uses five car trains. I did not add music to this film - its likely you can hear someone's car radio!

walking over one level crossing is scary enough but two?? i wonder why the crossing was altered,it seemed to look smaller in 2010 to its early footage.the white border round the lights looks very odd!

because those crossings were 70's to 80's when white was normal

@CitytransportInfoplus10 жыл бұрын
maria cornwallis sounds good to me, although if you come by car you'll need an overnight stay in London as its at least a 6 hour drive each way to this location. A day trip by train (East Coast from Newcastle / Grand Central from Sunderland) will be less tiring.

when did the crossing get refurbished?
@CitytransportInfoplus12 жыл бұрын
because thats how they 'switch off' when the barriers rise and the rquirement for road traffic to stop ends.
