This hits close for me. Three senior members of my family were part of the poster industry in the 1950s & 60s. The money they made from it was barely anything so second and third jobs were a necessity. I have a lot of artwork which was never used, old and faded; it will never see the light of day. Love your work and new topics that you explore. I feel posters can still be an effective strategy to market a film if done well. Like for period epics like a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film I guess a poster is very important as if released 3-4 months prior to the the teaser, it acts as character introduction and creates curiosity for the movie and its trailer. A good or innovative poster does create a buzz. For example, lipstick under my brukha is a recent one that stands out and hate story backless poster is still iconic. I am sure the poster itself would have sold so many tickets in small towns and single screens where audience at that time probably didn't see trailers as much as they do now.

I don't totally agree that posters of recent movies doesn't convey the storyline of the movie. And it's not like we can create posters in two seconds using AI, It will just not look good. Poster designers today also put their efforts in making original artworks in computer software and it takes time and dedication. You can check out Raj Khatri's and his team's work called Marching Ants. And there are many poster agencies running today and there are really talented artists today also.
