Malayalam cinema is top notch but should Bollywood be bullied for not being on par with Mollywood?

My love story with Malayalam cinema is kind of interesting 💖💖 I am a North Indian and a die hard Priyadarshan fan when he was active in Bollywood after he left Bollywood so I missed him but loved his Hindi films. Later when in 2021 he came back to Bollywood so I was about to enter college life, I applied in Symbiosis Pune, so in the interviews I was asked about my Interest which was 'Filmmaking' and Inspiration who was 'Priyadarshan' so the Symbiosis staff asked me that Do I watch Malayalam films? but I had no knowledge of it, though I left Symbiosis as I did not get admission in Mass Comm but always had a wish to see Malayalam films. During the same time phase many Malayalam films were promoted like Home or Joji and 'Home' was my first Mollywood film followed by Uyare and Minnal Murali(did not understand it much), later in 2022 I fell in love with Mollywood more with films like Hridayam, Bangalore Days, Drishyam, Oppam and became and addict to it. I later even watched the cult classics of Priyadarshan and that lead to me discover another legend Sathyan Anthikad. I was born in 2003 but the 80s and 90s is my most favorite era of Mollywood after post 2010 era and now 2024. I am just addicted with Malayalam music and even tried cooking Malayali food and started understanding the language though unable to speak, read or write due to which some of my cousins say that I should live in Kerala and get married to a Malayali. I wish that I can work in Mollywood also because as an aspiring filmmaker, I started loving Malayalam cinema more than any language and it has an influence on my writing and vision of filmmaking. 🎥 Hope I visit Kerala soon. I even have a budding filmmaker friend from the state who offered me to work in Mollywood.🎬 🎬💖💖

As a malayalee, I'd like to think of it as the difference between a person who reads novels, vs a person who does not read novels. Any avid reader of books or stories would want to hear new stories and would be appreciative of a good story, no matter the language. Kerala has a rich legacy of libraries, writers and scripts from decades. Which has slowly translated into movies since.

Nowadays Malayalam viewers wanted to know who all are the technical part of the movies along with actors eg: directors, script writer, cinematography ,music camera man , production team etc. they play crucial role in movies. People are the great fans for directors too.

Every film industry has a golden era. Malayalam cinema is doing great now , no doubt . But the quality of Malayalam cinema frm mid 80s to early 2000 were totally in a different league . If Malayalam film had the similar reach in that era , this industry would have already become global or so called pan India .

To feel a slice of Malayalam film culture you should visit yearly International Film Festival of Kerala - IIFK. You would see common man and woman, young and old from streets walking in to watch some of the best movies of that year from around the world. The bonus, you would be sitting next to some of the most famous movie makers. You won’t see the sunglass wearing glitterati anywhere.

You're right about Bollywood claiming credit. Already the director of the Hindi version of Drishyam 2 has spread nonsense about Drishyam 3 releasing simultaneously in Hindi and Malayalam in the future. He said that their team has cracked the script and the Malayalam team will be using their script. He has no aukaat to write a script like Drishyam series and giving big talks. Later Jeethu Joseph clarified in an interview that all those reports were false and he hasn't even started work on the script for Drishyam 3, only the climax was narrated to Mohanlal who loved it.

@@ReelRealReflect You're welcome. Oh you haven't watched it? Man you're in for a treat! Even with it's near 3 hour runtime, I've watched it 3 times already. It doesn't feel boring/too long due to the gripping screenplay. The inclusion of tribal/folk music into the BGM is a masterstroke. Beautiful cinematography, realistic fight choreography (no people flying around), great performances by the cast. The movie won 4 national awards too for direction, fight choreography, supporting actor and singer (an elderly tribal woman who sang for this film).

A very balanced analysis highlighting both film industries, which I equate to being branches of the huge tree that is Indian Cinema. You've succintly put forth your points on craft that Malayalam actors and technicians have for the craft of cinema. I was also happy that you did not dismiss Hindi Cinema that many people automatically do these days when compared to regional stuff while highlighting the consistent period of decades that the industry churned out, which I feel is way more than all other film industries in our country. At the same time, kudos for calling out the major problem of mainstream "Bollywood" and the celebrities that constantly cater to box office collections and mindless entertainers by taking the audience for grated due to which superlative Hindi movies get buried, whose list is huge, under the crap pile of bad work. Please also make a video on the superlative stuff of Hindi and other regional industries as well.

Well narrated, to understand Malayalam content and it's cultural influences you need to have a good patience and the roots which are close to our daily lives. That's how our Malayalam industry work, offcourse there are masala and maas movie seekers also who are more influenced by other industry and do get carried away, but young director era started from 2012 movies have come to a great thought process and changed the dimensions of movie seekers.

Wow! Great video dude. You covered pretty much every aspect. Sometimes I feel like it’s not the problem with the story or direction in any industry. But they are making movies which is more appealing to the ‘target audience’. Most movies remade from Malayalam to other industries are highly modified for the audience.

i watched a Malayalam movie a few years ago. I don't remember it's name but i remember the story quite well. It was about a young man going through the consequences of road rage. How he goes to jail, how he repents and becomes a good member of the society and the help he gets and the difficulties he faces. It did not have over the top elements or anything, Just a movie telling a story which had me hooked from the beginning until the credits started rolling. And then recently, i saw another movie partially. It was another one telling a story and that story was not far fetched but the kind that happens in real life. It did not have any obscene item numbers or anything. Just a story which highlights how grit and a positive outlook to life helps one face challenges and overcome them. Again the nature of challenges was also not over the top, it was something that anyone in real society would face. The music was controlled and not the blaring kind which is usually used to tell the mood or set the pacing. That was accomplished by well crafted screenplay. There was a Marathi movie where the protagonist was born into a rich family. He was not useless but was uncaring towards the employees in his family's factory. His grandfather was a very kind man. He could not understand why his grandfather did what he did and why he stopped him from firing people to maximize profit. His approach to business was different to his grandfather. So his grandpa as a challenge, asked him to go and live the life of a normal employee for a month or so and then whatever decision he made, he would be okay with it. So, he goes and finds himself a job and lives their life and finally understands his grandfather's actions. It was an amazing movie. I don't remember the name of the movie but wish more movies like them get the attention they rightfully deserve.

Sadayam is a must watch. It is Mohanlal’s best performance along with Iruvar imo. Spadikam, Devasuram, Aaram Thamburan and Narasimham are his best Mass movies.

Although the video is speaking more about quality in Malayalam film industry to which I also agree, some observations regarding Bollywood being glamour oriented is not completely true. I've watched some films of Tapsee Pannu and her choice of stories is amazing. She made sure that she got enough screen space in those stories and every character in those story are different from the one that she did before. Bollywood, to do justice to their heroines, just needs to promote such actresses who are ready to do experiments in the stories they choose to act rather than who play safe by being glamour girls. When women oriented films gather momentum then male leading plots would also be quick to follow.

Everybody talks about the golden era and the current era of malayalam movies where the love for films is what drives the indusstry. but there was also a dark phase where all that came out was soft porn and mediocre mass movies , the reason being that quality movies were getting rejected. Not even the big stars like mammootty and mohanlal were spared where their good movies tanked and the mass movies became superhits. Even then, good movies like mazha, manchadikkuru, akale, makalkku, karunam, shantham, photographer were being made. Malayalam movies recovered from this malady around 2010, when the mass stopped working on the younger generation and small budget films like traffic, cycle, chappakurishu won big at the box office and stood on equal ground with big movies.

I started watching malayalam movie in 2019. Before that I would watch only bollywood movies all my life until 2019 and started watching mohanlal and mamooty movies. Then different mallu actors movies and I realized the content they have and the acting omg I realized bollywood actors are still learning how to act. From 2019 I never watched bollywood movies again. Became Hard-core fan of malayalam movies. Even mani ratnam who is dangerous director. People are scared of him. Because if the right expression and dialogue u can't deliver. He will fire you on the spot and after watching mohanlal's acting in iruvar. He forgot to say cut. He just stood still. He said no one can act like him. He is God of acting.

Can popular cinema raise social consciousness? Malayalam cinema did that during 80s, along side meaningful entertainment. Unfortunately, you had to live in kerala to witness the flow. But some of those films are available online these days.
