I would praise this game quite a bit more than you did, Nitro. The sound effects are top-notch and unique, and the environments have great variety. The levels are pretty short but there are a LOT of them (way more than other 3D platformers that have levels). This makes the game very different from the open-area collectathons that dominated the world of 3D platformers the moment 3D became viable. In that sense, this game has a lot in common with 2D platformers -- it's less about exploration and more about linear platforming skill. And yet it uses the 3rd dimension just enough to provide some exploration and hidden thing, and the third axis works great for interesting visuals and for meaningful enemy placement. In this way, it's much like Super Mario 3D World, but a few generations earlier. Because of the fixed camera and the weird bunch of stages, the game just feels eerie to me. You often end up inside weird techno buildings or jumping around strange indoor duct-systems suspended over an abyss. It makes you wonder who built these, and who uses them? I mean really, it's completely unique. I don't know a game that built such a mysterious vibe just because of its platform-driven level design. And these strange aesthetics in every level integrate cleverly into the gameplay so often. This stage is all about its elevator system, this stage is all about moving into the z-axis, this stage is about teleporters, etc. And don't forget the mirror stage -- that one is brilliant. As for 100%ing the game -- I think it was done terrifically. The levels really are short, so if you just want to beat the game, it's a pretty simple and fun experience that a kid could probably pull off. But if you want to up the difficulty, you try to collect everything in every level. And this would be annoying in so many other games, but again, the levels here are short and linear. So there's really not much to it; it's not super difficult, nor is it a tedious game of hide-and-seek. For an experienced gamer, it's a perfectly suitable challenge, and it frankly redeems the game. Without this design, it wouldn't hold my attention long enough. I would just beat and shove it under the rug. But man, no matter what you think of the gameplay, the sound effect for picking up crystals -- mmm! Man, it's just so glassy and crunchy. It's delicious. This game's sound design is just like no other. So I've got to give this game the ultimate praise: It's not the greatest game ever. It's not the masterpiece that aspiring designers should bow down to. But it's exactly what a video game should be: It's excellent fun, it's imaginative, it has an appropriate challenge for everyone, and it uses the audio-visual and player-controlled nature of the medium to the fullest. And it does it all on its own terms. Again, it might not be on the Mt. Rushmore of gaming, but it's good AND unique; if you want to play a game like Bomberman Hero, you pretty much have only one option -- play Bomberman Hero.

I don't know if it's the nostalgia speaking, but I used to love this game as a kid in the 90s. And then the game was re-released for the Virtual Console on Wii when I was around 18 or so, and I managed to complete it, and the game didn't seemed to age poorly to me. There was only one stage where I really struggled to get the maximum score. This video brought some nice memories, thanks dude

12:24 is the funniest moment of the video in my opinion. 😂

Been watching your vids for a while and I gotta say, it's hard nowadays to find someone that gives games a fair shot. Keep it up.

Underrated, quality content. I showed my brother your Lisa videos not too long ago and he purchased Lisa the Painful + Lisa the Joyful last week.

There was one other Bomberman platformer just before this: Pocket Bomberman!

There are a lot more changes in the Japanese version of Bomberman Hero. For starters, power-ups are much more plentiful in on-foot levels, more than you need to get a perfect score. In particular, the game was much more generous with health pickups. More importantly, you know how when you collect 200 gems you get a health upgrade? In the Japanese version, that was permanent to your file, hence why a lot of late game stages are so much more unforgiving - they expected you to play them with more than just four hit points.

That explains a lot I though it was more along the lines of, this is the "git gud" section of the game. I was still able to do most of the game with 4 health until the ship and final planet.

I'm really impressed you knew about the three bonus levels for the start-mashing. I half wondered if I needed to make a cheeky comment about you missing that after watching, but nope! You really do your research, haha.

I know you're tired of all those "but was it Nitro?" Kinda jokes, but you did kinda bring it upon yourself you know, mister.

Just recently started watching your reviews and you instantly became my favourite. Love your exposition in all your reviews and personally, hearing your opinion on so many childhood favourites (Bomberman Hero, Chameleon Twist, Sonic Adventure etc) you seriously seem like a rad dude haha (pun intended of course). Keep up the amazing work man! Cheers from Ontario!

okay just saying this now thank you for reviewing this. I have so many memories of playing this either as a kid and as an adult and all of them I loved playing this odd little gem from Hudson. From the great music and levels to the unique gameplay I really enjoyed playing this game. I also agree to most of the points of this review (minus the flying and aqua stages since I kinda liked those stages) but the rest of them I either understood or agreed with. Awesome work dude.

Man I love your videos, they're so natural and genuine, the bits of comedy you add aren't forced at all, and I feel like you really know what you're talking about, and you're extremely fair in your judgement. Bomberman Hero is my least favorite of the three N64 Bomberman games. I know you focus on platformers a lot, but I'd really love to see you tackle the other two games, those are some of my favorites, despite their clunkiness at times.

Hey dude. I've been watching your videos for quite a while, but only recently was able to subscribe and rewatch the channel again. I just wanna say that I love your content. Your Anodyne review was great and it was a pleasant surprise to see a brand new Bomberman Hero review in my feed just now. Cheers, friend.
