Its funny you mentioned that it sounds like it was recorded in a cabin in the woods, because that's exactly where Justin ended up recording this album. Love the vibe of this channel, keep it up!

the last week of ninth grade, my english teacher told me to listen to bon iver. blood bank had just come out a few months before, he was going to a small concert that weekend a couple of hours away. (he later told me about a dozen people showed up to that show.) i went home that day and downloaded this first album from itunes. one of my best friends had just gotten his driver's license. we drove around town in his car constantly that summer and this album was on the stereo every night. it's a wintery album but i'll always associate it with that hot alabama summer. it quickly became my favorite album. now i've seen bon iver live five times.

HoooooooRaaaaaaaahhhh! We're back! Live. From the STUUDDIOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo..... yo! Man oh man, Bon iver, you've reached very familiar territory for me. I've loved exploring new hip hop and things like radiohead with you. Been finding some really nice stuff through your reviews. But here we are, alternative, singer songwriter, these kinds of things are my territory (in terms of familiarity rather than expertise haha). Im keen to journey with you on this one. Ill type as I listen. Flume: What a start, straight into setting the vibe for the album, simple, moving. His vox production and style makes it hard to follow what he's saying, and yet (and even though lyrics are a huge part of a songs enjoyment for me) I still love how it works in these songs. Lump sum: Man how about the warmth in these stripped back productions. Two for two. The low falsetto, iconic. The high falsetto harmony, iconic. Rough but clear but warm acoustic, iconic. Skinny love: Haha I was right with you on this one when I first heard it. I was like hey! This is birdy's song. But no. "Like its recorded in a cabin in the forest", funny that! Sounds like it because it was :P. The wolves (act I and II): One of my favs from this album. Such a melancholic, slow, but resonant, and powerful song. The chorus? Soooooo good. The build, the vox layers, the delicious chaos of percussion into the outro, perfect. Blindsided: You're right, such a nice play between low and high elements in this one. I find it a nice part of the album going from this really driven song with its base note guitar picking into the open and vocal exploration intro to creature fear. Creature fear: Amazing dynamics isn't it. Such highs and lows. Team: Probably the song I least connect with on the album. But a cool use of whistling which I can get around stylistically haha. For Emma: Call back to the album title, fills me with so much emotion in this album, so far so filled with heartbreak and loss, melancholy and grief. Yet lots of energy too in the instrumentation. Like an old heartbreak, dulled by time but not forgotten. The long horn lines and drawn out electric guitar notes for me add to this distance of time. Like looking back in a dream while still being driven by the strumming and drums. Re: stacks: Man, got to be one of my favourite songs of bon iver of all time. This is such an amazing finish to the album. The resolution we were looking for throughout the whole album. An album of searching and remembered pain comes to a close on this song. For me re: stacks has alot of peace in it. Im not theoretical enough to know if theres things going on here but its the most grounded and resolved on the songs for me. There's hope in the chord progressions, each measure ending on the higher chords rather than lower of the rest of the album. The lyrics are fantastic. Like after the emotional processing of the album we come to a clearer take on the past relationship. Still plenty of emotion but there's an acceptance and readiness to move beyond. Feels like when the song is over he will be ready to leave the cabin he's been stuck in. And this is enhanced by the outro to the song where you can hear the sounds like that of him putting down his guitar and getting up off his chair. Haha loved the rain shananigans there at the end. :P. I love the continuity of this album. The songs are individual and iconic of themselves, yet the whole album is so cohesive, drawn together by common threads in instrumentation, style, production. I agree entirely with you, its like a journey of comming to terms with past heartbreak. What a journey! A pleasure watching you go through this one! Can't wait for the next upload!

In 2008, one of my bestfriends was going through a tough break with his love. I bought him this vinyl and played it for him on loop until he got it all out. It's a bewitching cathartic piece of music. This album is good magick.

. . He was actually lucky to have a Witch as a friend. I spun his sorrow out the door. And turned it into a storm. Thus the rain when the sounds of this album are really heard.

Really enjoying your reactions, man. I'd really recommend Volcano Choir to you, which is another Bon Iver side project. They have two albums, Unmap, a experimental folk album that isn't everyones cup of tea, but the second, Repave, is a brilliant collection of songs that I think you'd love, especially if you love Bon Iver's second album as much as I do. Keep exploring, mate.
