Indeed. I found it rather ominous. Someone else might have felt nervous, not so Peter. Which is why I found this scene entertaining. Note that the men on either side of Tommy begin to manifest uncertainty (sideways glance) only after Peter attempts to defy Tommy with the threat of public indignation.

An irresistable force versus an immovable object, take your pick who is which! Of course we all know how it's going to end but I've got to admire Group Captain Townsend, he's a fighter ace and has faced death many times over. He's not going to be intimidated by a bureaucrat, no matter how high up that bureaucrat sits and how hard that bureaucrat tries to frighten him. But of course he can't win in the end. A shame. Peter and Margaret were just born too soon. Although I've read that Margaret COULD have married Peter IF she was willing to give up her title and everything that came with it but she was unwilling to do so.

It depended on the circumstances. I read his 1942-1946 diaries titled Kings Counsellor which are absolutely fascinating. Lascelles regarded anything that might damage the reputation of the monarchy as a threat to the country as a whole. Hence his utter ruthlessness when dealing with the Duke of Windsor who he was a close confidant of during the 1920s and had come to despise with good reason. He had nothing personal against Peter Townsend. He in fact respected him because of his distinguished military service but he also understood all too clearly that at that time, it was impossible for the Queen to be seen to condone her sister marrying a divorcee as it would have undermined her place as Governor of the Church of England. If I recall, several years after this Lascelles and Townsend had lunch together at Kensington Palace and there were no hard feelings.

Townsend's threat about the press turned out to be accurate. Once the wedding was called out the press ripped into the Church of England and the church and monarchy came out of it seeming weaker and more out of touch. Then Margaret new marriage fell apart and became a scandal, because she became the first royal in a long time to divorce, something that potentially wouldn't have happened had she married Towsend. Thus the blocking of this marriage created multiple scandals that caused the monarchy headaches for the next couple of decades. In the end Townsend married a young Belgian woman and later remarked about all the drama he avoided but not joining the family.

@@madeleinegrayson8372while i agree that someone like Margaret is unlikely to do well living life as a common person (anyone in the royal family, really) I also think that her decision to not marry Townsend was also in part because of falling out with her family. The example her uncle left on the family was tremendous, and she was obviously raised by her traditionalist mother to put her duty to the crown before anything else, as was Elizabeth. Growing up hearing how selfish her uncle was for preferring love over duty. Ofc the live of luxury also had to do with it, but I imagine the threat of being a pariah in your own family has to be taken into consideration.

Peter Townsend had significant deficits as suitor for a royal princess even if you discount that he was divorced. He was temperamental and impulsive and often indiscreet. And he never did grasp that radio and television had made the Royals first-story news 24/7. There could be no quiet weekends out of the public eye and many of the 'low traditions' of the nobility no longer applied. For example, there could be no discreet affairs for either of them after Margaret had supplied the 'heir and a spare'. He simply couldn't accept that a member of the House of Windsor had the least private private life in the Western world. Yes, Queen Mary and Tommy Lascelles use every trick in the book, both over- and underhanded, to keep Margaret and Peter Townsend from marrying. On the one hand it was a lousy thing to do to a daughter you love. On the other hand, Townsend would have been a disaster for the Royal Family in the wake of The Eddie And Wally Show.

Queen and parliament were rady to give her permission to marry in Scotland and the only sacrifice she was asked to make was that her and Peter's children will not be in line of succession. They gave her option of morgnomatic marriage same option was given to Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson but he refused because he wanted to make her Queen. Princess Anne also married 2nd time in Scotland nobody take away her titles and she,her children and grandchildren are still in line of succession (because her children are from 1st marriage). And since 2002 church of England allows divorce people whose ex spouse are still alive to marry another person. Margreat didn't marry peter Townsend because in their 2 years brake Margreat had few flings and she thought peter isn't good enough to not have grand wedding in Westminster Abbey and to loose her children right in line of succession.
