I grew up with Bonanza.... Yes from the very begining in the late 1950s until it finished in early 1970s. But mostly in the 1960s it was a great hit! I love the original cast members Lorne Greene with the 3 sons, Adam , Hoss, and Little Joe Cartwright. I even dreamed on being on that Ponderosa acting out a scene in one of their episodes. When looking back at the beginning of Bonanza we can see how much the characters changed as they developed. It would be interesting to know whether that happened because of intervention of the actors, or was a conscious decision of the writers or director, or possibly a combination of everyone involved. I am grateful that the characters developed into the 4 that I am so fond of. I am not impressed with this first episode. One of the first special 10 Episodes of Bonanza in the 1959-60 season that did loosely follow the history of the great silver strike in 1858-59 that became the Comstock Lode, and the founding of Virginia City. Being a history buff, those first 10 Bonanza Episodes are my all-time favorite episodes of the show. After that, Bonanza stories became more standard Hollywood / TV western. There are two great books that inspired the show, THE BIG BONANZA (1876) Dan DeQuille and ROUGHING IT (1872) Mark Twain. Both authors had lived in Virginia City during the original glory days of the silver strike, both as newspaper men writing for "The Territorial Enterprise" and living in the genuine 'Wild West' era. The Bonanza Season 1 Episode 5, "Enter Mark Twain" shows the arrival of Twain in 1860 roughly, when Twain actually did not arrive in Nevada Territory until July 1861.

@@CathyKitson Well you have a point. However if Hoss had not been on the show I would not have made a point to watch every single week as a child growing up Hoss was so different from any other actor on any other western series at the time. Joe was cute but did not have quite the engaging personality that Hoss had. Usually boys loved Hoss and girls loved Little Joe but my 3 sisters preferred Hoss.

Christopher Dark plays Doc Holliday in a later episode. He has more of a role in "Calamity over the Comstock" than his portrayal of Langford Poole. He's pretty good looking for a villain.

Lorene Green convinced the powers to be that the show would be better if the Cartwrights were more a part of the community rather than being so defensive of their land. Adam was pretty cruel to be talking about Joe's mother being from the French Quarter. In a later episode, Ben confesses to Joe that his mother was from the rough side of town and he seems to be hearing that for the first time.
