Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 117 - Elegy for a Hangman - Adam helps an angry young man to confront the "hanging judge" who sentenced his father to death in a high-stakes miscarriage of justice.
Elegy for a Hangman
Director: Hollingsworth Morse
Writers: E.M. Parsons (teleplay), Shirl Hendryx (teleplay) | 1 more credit »
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 20 January 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Bob Jolley is an angry young man who confronts Judge "Hanging Harry" Whitaker about unjustly sentencing his father to death. An attempt on the life of the chief witness leads Adam to wonder if Bob might be right. Powerful interests, including a senator and a railroad, seem to have wanted Bob's father dead. Adam learns that a gunman has apparently been hired to silence Bob. Adam, with the support of his brothers and his father, must defend Bob and bring the truth to light. Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
Review:
"The Cartwrights are entertaining Judge Otto Kruger at the Ponderosa who has a good but strict reputation on the bench. At the same time young Keir Dullea comes into Virginia City accusing the judge of an unfair trial in regard to his father who the judge sentenced to hang some months ago.
When the chief witness at the trial Kevin Hagen is wounded and when gunman Ron Soble tries to pick a fight with Dullea it's Adam Cartwright who appoints himself a one man Warren Commission to investigate the whole matter. The results point to a lot of corruption in high places.
This episode belongs to Pernell Roberts who conducts himself like a prosecuting attorney in that last scene. The guest cast is uniformly fine and that includes William Zuckert as a smarmy senator.
One for Pernell Roberts fans." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

An extremely well-scripted, acted and directed episode. One of Pernell's best performances as Adam. He was truly a highly talented yet underrated actor. Keir Dullea, Otto Kruger, William Zuckert, Kevin Haven and Ron Soble all shone in their supporting roles. Once again, Adam is the brains of Bonanza with a heart to match. The humanity of this series is truly humbling. I especially liked Keir's Bob Jolley facing the truth about his flawed but innocent father and his guilt over his father's lonely, tragic death. A very moving episode that still resonates after more than five decades. That is the true test of any art form, especially drama. Many thanks again for airing this fine episode.

@@hannahcruz1440 Pernell never regretted leaving the show. He went on to an award-winning theater career and a more satisfying and lucrative TV gig as the lead on Trapper John MD. Pernell also was a social and political activist, having marched for civil rights with Dr. King at Selma. He may have foregone making millions of dollars had he stayed on Bonanza, but he led a million-dollar life in values, in my humble opinion. Most important, he did it his way, to paraphrase Paul Anka's song. That's what counts.

@@arlineabdalian8974 Well said! D Dortort admitted he had been too hard on Pernell and hadn't appreciated him enough and he enhanced any part he was given, He left the door open for Pernell to come back but as we know he never did. When Pernell agreed to the part he was promised diversity in the role but it didn't happen, Pernell tried for 3 years to give suggestions to improve his part but they were rejected, he asked to work on a part time basis so he could do other things but D Dortort refused so for the next 3 seasons Pernell gave up trying and saw his contract out . For his own sanity he did not renew his contract and left and the 7th season onwards was not the same and lacking in losing the Adam character. Pernell went on to bigger and greater things and had a lucrative career....What would you do for your own peace of mind and sanity, in todays world mental health is an issue but back then Pernell decided it was for his mental health that he left...I applaud him! RIP Pernell!

Because Brando and Dean had made the Rebel movies new idols many of the actors that would have been leading men in movies had turned to television. I think that judge was a spineless wimp. Instead of doing his duty as a judge, he caved in and did not have the balls to stand up for justice. This is especially galling in a capital case, when a man’s life was at stake. The senator and that other man were just crooks, but a judge who violates his oath … I just cannot stomach that at all.

The slow camera pan of the town banner is a significant part of US History--the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Bonanza had much sensitivity to present this. Also to hire Perry Lopez, Alex Montoya and Rafael Lopez(no relation to Perry).

In the opening scene, I thought the old guy on the wagon (the judge) was Bob Barker.

In the opening scene, they can be seen loading the wagon with sacks of grain. If they own the biggest ranch in Nevada, why don't they just grow all that grain and whatnot? They are all the time going into town to buy supplies that the land they own could easily supply.

They use that land for range and pasture. Grain takes plowing, seeding, irrigation, harvesting and threshing. All that takes equipment and manpower. Time and money.

Nowadays, there's no fighting over property wanted for the RR. They make an offer, or declare imminent domain. Anyone shooting gets prison.
