This incident was reported by a pilot who was on frequency at the time. If you are a pilot, don't hesitate, send an email and share your experiences with VASAviation so we can learn together. *Lesson to be learned today:* use caution in sunrise/sunset, doublecheck your instruments and visual clues and go around if you have any doubts where you're heading to.

With the sun in the wrong spot... easy mistake to make. You can't really see much out the windshield, you're squinting, but you can see a long stretch of what looks like runway thats reflecting the sun. Of course you can't see what's around it or even the markings on it. It's not until you're quite low that you realize that it's the parallel taxiway thats the same width as many small runways. Although its a concerning occurrence, as a commercial pilot myself, I'm not going to judge for that.

Agreed, been there myself, although I figured it out myself at 200' not 15'. Plenty of time to correct. Another point I'll make is that in retrospect it didn't "look quite right" either: I was familiar with the airport, I should've considered going around. Many airports have taxiways parallel to the runway, it's not at all uncommon, and many smaller fields don't have lighting or PAPIs.

Not going to lie, I just moved from Morristown New Jersey (kmmu) to Mesa Arizona. I keep my Mooney at Falcon Field. And the taxi ways do look like the runway. They are really close to the runway (compared to Morristown) and there is a run-up pad before the taxiway that when planes line up on it, it looks like that they are holding short of the runway when they actually arent. I've never made the mistake. But i can see what the bonaza was saying (not giving him the excuse)
@VASAviation

Plus the sun in front at sunset time. Sounds very logic from his side so it's OK to make that mistake and that's what we all have to learn. Thanks for sharing your points of view as a Mesa pilot.

Thanks for providing the context on this. I'm not a pilot in real life, but I know from sims how this kind of mistake could be easy to make at some airfields Something to think about in designing an airfield, too: try to make your taxiways and runways visually distinct, not just by markings which can be hard to see in sun-glare, but by layout and design.

go around, go around ... go around. “I can still land...” Trying to salvage and force a landing at that point is going to end badly. A mistake happened. What was a close call (past tense, danger behind us) almost became another error leading to a bent airplane or far worse. Good on him for keeping his head and thinking better of that decision. The pattern takes +/- 10 minutes. That’s 10 minutes to catch your breath, clear your head, fly the circuit you’ve flown hundreds of times before, and a make a smooth gentle turn base to final in a focused, stable approach down to the runway. Yes, there was a f up. Consequences sure - chat w/ tower, maybe FSDO. But no bent airplanes and everyone lives to fly another day.

Sun on scratched perspex is not a good combination. Its not like sun on glass of a car that remains in one place, it radiates across the whole windshield. I remember my first solo, late afternoon - basically lost 90% visibility with the sun directly facing me. Shocked me, basically had to keep moving the airplane to block the sun on the metal body work. Always consider (low) sun as a risk factor now.

I fly out of this airport and while there's no real excuse for this, I can at least understand how it could happen based on the pilot's explanation. There have been days when pilots on frequency have actually requested that the tower change the runways due to sun glare. Remember this is Arizona, and at certain times of year and day the sun is just right down the 22's and *very* bright. I have had trouble more than once just determining height over the runway because I just can't see it. It may as well be IMC. Never lined up with the taxiway because there are other visual cues you can use, especially if you're familiar with the airport, but I can 100% believe that the pilot never even saw the other plane that was holding short.

Met a guy a few years back who was a British ww2 pilot. He told me that he was being taken up in a Cesna and he would have the opportunity at the controls. You can see the write up in the newspaper, so I checked it out. His story was published and told of being awarded a DFC for bringing a bomber and crew home from a raid where the aircraft was caught in searchlights, he looped the plane after being hit, losing 12000 feet in the loop and just making it home as the plane went onto 1 engine. Purpose of telling this story here? He was trained at Falcon Field together with many British pilots. There’s a great book out there somewhere of this field and its place in wartime history. Pilot was Tom Austin the most unassuming man you ever met.

@5putput it’s not lying if you’re just wrong, and people are often wrong in recalling stressful situations. There’s no immorality to it, and you do it to when you’re not trying to be holier-than-thou on the internet about someone else. I know this because that’s basic human psychology.
@mytech6779
@mytech6779 3 жыл бұрын
@5putput I made a separate post about the added melodrama psychology. Often it is as you say about taking advantage of a situation simply to get an upperhand and feel power. In some cases it is an Ego issue where they need to be the biggest victim to self justify their decision to cancel the flight, that is they exaggerate the incident so they can dismiss any appearance of weakness by claiming nobody else has had so much burden.
@mytech6779
@mytech6779 3 жыл бұрын
@5putput Fortunately accident investigators are trained to reduce bias and be as impartial as can be expected for a human while collecting evidence, and then to avoid confirmation bias while later analyzing the collected information. They also know about the possible inaccuracy of eye witness reports.
@DoctorLodi
@DoctorLodi 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a standard feature of human psychology. You’re getting yourself worked up into a moral frenzy over the natural working of the human brain. It is categorically not lying if your fallible human memory tells you it’s true. Being wrong != lying. Full stop. I’m making light of nothing, I’m condemning your angry mob mentality which is way more dangerous than your manufactured outrage and othering of people for a standard trauma response.

I had to take a breather once after a near midair in the pattern. I was in a Kiowa Warrior in closed traffic and a Chinook flew through my pattern at my altitude. It happened to be my first night flying with NVGs and was the scariest thing that ever happened to me. We landed, sat for about 15 minutes, and then finished the lesson.

Well in jobs like that, where you handle lot of radio traffic, you kind of zone out unless you hear "tower" as in someone calling them.. which means he probably missed half, if not most of the sentence as he was not prepeared to focus on the message given. Besides that, yes it was quite funny.

@TheVergile

Eh. Disagree. First off its not like he made a mistake due to negligence. If the sun is in a bad spot it can be almost impossible to make out the runway. Especially on small fields that you dont know well. Wouldnt be suprised if the runway wasnt much wider than the taxi, if at all. Only becomes apparent on close approach. Deciding whether or not to still go for the landing isnt a matter of “what was maybe almost caused” but a decision based purely on your ability to safely come down. If the runway is long enough it could have been a valid decision. I assume he just ended up not liking the length he had left or his mental state and went for the go-around. Also perfectly valid decision. You dont know any of the factors from this video, so making an outside retrospect call is just completely unfounded. Maybe he decided to give it another go with a tailwind landing instead or just went around to have full runway and some time to collect himself. I dont know that. You dont know that. Learn from mistakes other people do, but do so based on facts - not conjecture.

I was landing 22L at FFZ when a Piper who was cleared for 22R got confused and starting to descend on top me. The controller saw the near mid air and went ballistic.
