Swing around to the approach on Google Earth; if you're thinking "I need to land on the long straight thing to the left of the big runway," well, Charlie kinda qualifies. I could see it being an easy mistake to make if you're focused on everything except the paint on the pavement. (And trust me, if you're landing parallel to and behind an airplane several times the size of yours, you're way more focused on where that wake turbulence is going to hit than on the ground art.)

Hi Kelsey, Voice recognition over the airwaves. Years ago as a military pilot on a ground tour with the Army I was waiting for a supply drop and communicating with our airborne delivery system. The pilot of that system was an old mate of mine and after hearing my army call-sign and my voice broadcast over the airways... He asked " Is that you ***? I answered is that you ***** (I recognized his voice as well,) Yes I said and yes he said... totally unprofessional really but the outcome was he asked if I could mark the drop zone in a way that he and I knew and had dropped on when we flew together back in the day day. I complied. I gave him an approach heading from an easily identified ground feature and he amazed the assembled company of army folk by arriving over the DZ at 250 feet and putting our supplies on the button instead of a scattered delivery from 800+ feet. It's nice to have friends.

From what I understand, hearing “I have a phone number for you to call” from ATC doesn’t necessarily mean that the pilot is in trouble. It’s more of a “Hey, call me, and we’ll talk together about what caused this incident.” I was actually listening in on my handheld transceiver to ATC at my local airport, KUES, and the Tower asked a pilot to call them. The only reason they wanted the pilot to call in that case was because he mentioned on the radio that he saw something on the taxiway. It’s better to have a prolonged discussion on the phone rather than jamming up the radio.

I always said, even if he thought he was landing on a runway you would never over fly another plane and land on the runway. He should have went around and he would have corrected two wrongs at the same time.

For the Atlanta situation, I would have revoked his taxi clearance and directed him to return to the gate and called his company. He’s obviously not in a proper mindset to fly responsibly.

I was flying on LOT airlines once, I think I had a slight cold and probably my sinuses were a little congested, during the decent, I began having unbearable pain in my neck and ears, I never felt such pain in my life, I couldn't move my neck as I felt knives were cutting through it.. I was confused on what was going on, I thought it might be a pressurization issue in the aircraft and tried to tell the flight attendant about it and that I'm in great pain, I got snubbed by her in the worst way.. Out of the blue, another passenger a couple of rows ahead passed me a liquid and told me to pour it in my nose, that guy was a life savior, the pain immediately went away, it must have been a combination of pressurization and congestion, I will never forget that guy

Thaks for your discussion of crew resource management! I was a bit worried if the first officer had felt at that point whether or not he could say anything to the Captain. And thanks for providing a good example of a better way to respond to mistakes made being pointed out.

Since that airport has the John Wayne tower, and Han is an actor as well, seems only fitting to rename that taxi way as the Harrison Ford or HF taxi!!

I unknowingly met Ford at the FBO I worked at 20 years ago. He was in the line shack drinking coffee with the line guys before taking off. I had no idea it was him as he was wearing a hat pulled down over his face and a full beard. He was friendly and unassuming and a regular guy. I was acting like an idiot in the line shack joking around and he was laughing. He left and that's when the guys told me who he was. Although I felt like a fool, I'll always remember what a genuinely nice guy he was.

it could hv happened to anyone, lots of visibible illusions in aviation that lead to mistakes, pilots catch most of them- how much tire rubber, is covering John Wayne runway markings? he is foumous so its scrutinized for years, same thing happens every day

I lost an uncle due to a mistaken taxiway landing. He was a Nebraska Air Guard pilot doing practice night landings in an F-80 at a SAC base in the mid-1950s when he mistook the taxiway for the runway and crashed into 3 B-47's, killing him and two airmen on the ground. Fire fighting efforts were hampered because the B-47s were armed with nuclear weapons.

Sorry, as much as I think you are correct about "wind check" for high power aircraft, for single engine, and in CA, (presumably Kansas as well) the wind can change your life and the landing decision when it changes from head to cross to tail between base and final at coastal airports. Otherwise, a big fan of Han Solo's famous taxiway thing. There's one hellofafun airport in CA, 1C9, Frazier Lake, where you suppose to land R5/23 on turf or water parallel runways, and the paved thing next to it is a taxiway, but most people land on taxiway anyway....there you have it, but the kick is that you can practice grass and water all in one day!! Cheers 74!!
