"While Ann Wilson and her Uncle Fred are en route to her boyfriend Joe's birthday party, Fred suffers a sudden stroke and is rendered unconscious. A man claiming to be a Good Samaritan stops to help, only to rape and kill Ann. Joe is devastated and vows to track down the killer. While Fred is eventually moved to the Ponderosa to recover (and for his protection against anyone who might want to silence him), Joe undermines Deputy Clem Foster's investigation. Meanwhile, the killer - a munitions expert named William Poole - gets a job on the Ponderosa, since his expertise with a new substance called nitroglycerin can help clear old tree stumps off the ranch. Poole, who is staying with a widowed neighbor named Mrs. Gibson, tries to get at Uncle Fred, but Joe, who has been keeping a bedside vigil, stops him at every turn. Eventually, Joe sees Uncle Fred's hand move and begins questioning him. Fred is only able to scrawl a barely legible message before he goes numb, and suffers a subsequent (and ultimately fatal) stroke. Before Fred dies, Joe manages to figure out the note had something to do with "New Orleans Woman." Joe visits Mrs. Gibson, who produces sheet music to the song. After Joe leaves, Poole returns and Mrs. Gibson eventually realizes that he killed Ann. Poole, knowing he can be identified, kills Mrs. Gibson. Joe later hears an explosion coming from Mrs. Gibson's house and, knowing that Poole had finished his work and was supposed to be on his way, returns to investigate. Upon arrival, he sees Poole carrying Mrs. Gibson's burned corpse into the house, but Joe's suspicions that the explosion was no accident is confirmed when he sees the ripped up sheet music, pieces it back together and fingers Poole as Ann's killer. Poole, who reveals himself as a misogynist, threatens to blow the Ponderosa off the map and throws a vial at Joe, but Joe kills the villain in self-defense." Written by Brian Rathjen on IMDb.com

@Joe Owens. I agree Joe. This detective type episode reminds me of another episode where Adam did the detective type work to figure out who the killer was. Grjngo showed that episode as well. The title of that one is "Elegy for a Hangman." The date for that episode is January 20, 1963. It was as well written as this episode was. I think that you will really enjoy it! 🙂

A well-scripted, acted and directed episode. As some of my fellow viewers have so rightly commented, this is a fascinating murder mystery. We know who is the killer, yet we cannot be certain whether he will be unmasked in time. And there is nuance to these characters, particularly Evelyn Scott's Mrs. Gibson. The eerie and sickly attraction between her and Simon Oakland's Poole is edgier than most depicted in TV Westerns of that period. Again, a fascinating episode and worth watching. @@kevc21 Thank you for your insightful reply. To the best of my knowledge, the actor Simon Oakland, who played the murderer, was not African American. But you are absolutely correct that there were very few Black actors in Bonanza. This series, like others, is most definitely a product of its time. Bonanza ran from the late 1950s through the early 1970s, parallel to the Civil Rights Movement and Black Liberation Movement. The country, and in turn Hollywood, were changing, but very slowly. However, I still think that this was an interesting and view-worthy TV episode. In any event, I appreciate very much your valuable and insightful input. Thank you again.

These cartwrights like Benjamin Cartwright has such wisdom and had a way with words when he talked to me and everything sounds so simple and easy to understand a man of great education inspiring person especially to listen to in here could communicate so well and with anyone out there had a lot of character of course all the actors in the series was programmed Bonanza all them had character and wisdom beyond their years very very inspiring program very enlightening I spent hours and days watching episode after episode just a wonderful program I don't think programs like these anymore of course they don't do anything anymore like things too I guess it's a sign of the times to me sad times those days will never come back we need to hold on to these movies and programs cuz they show us the time in our lives they were happier times wonderful times on TV was great and not one of us today

I wonder when it was changed ( like Greensleeves became What Child is This?) I heard my mom talking about remembering laughing about singing Buffalo Gals (with what a child would think was witty , ending with " and she was full of gas.") It must've been around 1928 or 1929, as this was a toddler's joke cracking up the aunts and uncles. 😅 Wonder when it morphed?

Double post, sorry. All I see in a hurry is the sing was population in mistrial shows in 1800s, Buffalo Gals referred to Buffalo, NY. But it was common to change words to the place they were playing at ( thus New Orleans woman???I don't know without spending hours to try to find it). It mentions variations in the 1900s, but 70s or later in different genres. I don'tt see any prior switch before 1930, but had to be or maybe this was the original, since my family took a big dive [and though Caucasian even picked cotton in the south, truck farmed, and made a living playing music, too- not minstrel shows, but hillbilly & western swing early records]. So might have known the NY version.

@@belbal5004 I didn't always have that support as a child. I have always tried to give that type of support to my child. I have found the benefits are having a rewarding relationship that has grown and developed as my child has grown into adulthood.

They should have given a fewer discretion advised on the TV for this episode that's viewer discretion advised this is a real powerful episode I agree with you thank God for posting this show absolutely terrifying who would know that a serial killer is loose on a Bonanza episode that's a trip

Mistake On the ep the actress which is a few episodes before this one Ben said Joe Just turned 22. So unless this episode was flim first and they got them mixed up then ok but if not then Hugh Mistake on the writers part
