A well-scripted, acted and directed episode. As some of my fellow viewers have so rightly commented, this is a fascinating murder mystery. We know who is the killer, yet we cannot be certain whether he will be unmasked in time. And there is nuance to these characters, particularly Evelyn Scott's Mrs. Gibson. The eerie and sickly attraction between her and Simon Oakland's Poole is edgier than most depicted in TV Westerns of that period. Again, a fascinating episode and worth watching. @@kevc21 Thank you for your insightful reply. To the best of my knowledge, the actor Simon Oakland, who played the murderer, was not African American. But you are absolutely correct that there were very few Black actors in Bonanza. This series, like others, is most definitely a product of its time. Bonanza ran from the late 1950s through the early 1970s, parallel to the Civil Rights Movement and Black Liberation Movement. The country, and in turn Hollywood, were changing, but very slowly. However, I still think that this was an interesting and view-worthy TV episode. In any event, I appreciate very much your valuable and insightful input. Thank you again.

@Joe Owens. I agree Joe. This detective type episode reminds me of another episode where Adam did the detective type work to figure out who the killer was. Grjngo showed that episode as well. The title of that one is "Elegy for a Hangman." The date for that episode is January 20, 1963. It was as well written as this episode was. I think that you will really enjoy it! 🙂

These cartwrights like Benjamin Cartwright has such wisdom and had a way with words when he talked to me and everything sounds so simple and easy to understand a man of great education inspiring person especially to listen to in here could communicate so well and with anyone out there had a lot of character of course all the actors in the series was programmed Bonanza all them had character and wisdom beyond their years very very inspiring program very enlightening I spent hours and days watching episode after episode just a wonderful program I don't think programs like these anymore of course they don't do anything anymore like things too I guess it's a sign of the times to me sad times those days will never come back we need to hold on to these movies and programs cuz they show us the time in our lives they were happier times wonderful times on TV was great and not one of us today

Little Joe is a hot tempered mess. He is feisty as all get out; he will snap on you at the drop of a hat. It's as if he has a 'tic' for lack of a better word.🤷‍♀️ Thank goodness he was raised by Ben, if anybody else had raised him he would be a maniac! However we love him still.

I wonder when it was changed ( like Greensleeves became What Child is This?) I heard my mom talking about remembering laughing about singing Buffalo Gals (with what a child would think was witty , ending with " and she was full of gas.") It must've been around 1928 or 1929, as this was a toddler's joke cracking up the aunts and uncles. 😅 Wonder when it morphed?

Double post, sorry. All I see in a hurry is the sing was population in mistrial shows in 1800s, Buffalo Gals referred to Buffalo, NY. But it was common to change words to the place they were playing at ( thus New Orleans woman???I don't know without spending hours to try to find it). It mentions variations in the 1900s, but 70s or later in different genres. I don'tt see any prior switch before 1930, but had to be or maybe this was the original, since my family took a big dive [and though Caucasian even picked cotton in the south, truck farmed, and made a living playing music, too- not minstrel shows, but hillbilly & western swing early records]. So might have known the NY version.

A girl named Ann was going to Pendarosa with her uncle Fred and she was sexually harassed and killed by a criminal called William Poole . The culprit ran away. Again he killed another old woman. Joseph Cartwright was determined to catch the culprit and at last he killed him and solved the case. Such a great story. Western Classics. This episode is my favourite.

Wow. I never expected an opening scene like that from Bonanza! 11:37 The killer asks about the girl's uncle?! Why not just confess! :D That was ridiculous. More natural would be to say something like "I'm sorry to arrived at such a bad time, is the sick man part of your family?" and then Ben would state that he's the dead girl's uncle. Then the killer visits the dying man several times, each time providing another opportunity to be caught. I didn't really like the last quarter about the song. A man near death who just regained use of his hand writes the long "New Orleans woman"?! and they can immediately read it?! Silly. Then, the scene with the lady and Pool discussing the song seemed unnaturally forced. I was expecting Little Joe to see the uncle's reaction to Pool but not understand it. Using the song theme, the uncle could tap out the tune. People repeat it and the uncle is pleased but nobody understands what it means. Then Little Joe can ask the lady if she recognizes the tune and she says no but that it feels strangely familiar. Later, she hears Pool whistling and when he sees her, he sees that she's white as a ghost. so scared. He asks why she is scared. She won't say. When he moves towards her, she moves away. He feels that she is scared of him. This rejection makes him angry. She tries to leave. He stops her, says that he can't let her go. She asks why. He says that "I think that you know why." Knowing that Pool understands, she asks him "Did the dead girl reject you? You couldn't let her go?" Then he can give a speech about being wronged or being thunder... and kill her. Joe doesn't need the songbook to know that the Pool likely murdered the lady. Could simply be "She broke her neck? The dead girl had a broken neck too." You wife died from being too close to a blast. Did she have a broken neck too?" Pool knows the game is up. and we have the standoff. But no way that Little Jose would throw away his gun. That would make sense if Pool had a hostage, but this is a simple standoff. Joe could tell him that "You try to throw that and you'll be dead before it hits the ground." Pool fakes a throw and Joe flinches but doesn't shoot. Pool laughs at him. "You won't shoot because you don't know how big an explosion this will make. It's big enough to take out both of us." As he steps towards Joe, feeling confident. (or tries to get into his buggy to get away. At some point Pool starts to wind up a bigger throw, Joe shoots as he is diving into the house or behind a planter box. Perhaps a water trough and the explosion sprays water all over Joe, but he's safe. How does that sound? Which do you like better? How would you have written the ending?

Mistake On the ep the actress which is a few episodes before this one Ben said Joe Just turned 22. So unless this episode was flim first and they got them mixed up then ok but if not then Hugh Mistake on the writers part
