Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 140 - A Question of Strength - A stagecoach containing Hoss and two nuns is robbed. Later, one of the badly wounded robbers finds himself in their power.
A Question of Strength
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Frank Cleaver
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 27 October 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
"On business for Ben, Hoss takes the stagecoach to Denver. He joins two nuns in the same coach. Bandits attack the stage, which overturns, killing the driver and leaving the passengers at the mercy of the bandits. They rob Hoss and the nuns, who must trek their way on foot to the next way station. There they are surprised to find one of the robbers, badly wounded. Hoss finds that both of the nuns show a special kind of strength with the robber in their power." Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"Great episode. Best I've seen. Judith Carne gives an amazing performance as novice nun. Dan Blocker was quite an actor. He had little trouble carrying an episode without other Cartwrights.Hoss would have made a good Catholic. Episode looks at challenges of obedience and putting others ahead of yourself. Wonderful look at Christian life." Written by nlathy-839-300677 on IMDb.com

Truly, speaking both as a Catholic and as a true Bonanza fan, this was one of the most moving of all episodes. Also it presented Dan Blocker's wisest and most discerning self; he made Hoss truly loving, protective of good, and a little wiser, perhaps, about the inscrutable ways of the Lord.

This was intense, choices on top of decisions mixed with dreams, and the irony of the nemesis interfering with our choices, decisions and dreams, all these actors are inside each of us. Really good acting, scripting and the musical scores that seduce us into the story line of our imagination. We don't get this form of art in this 21 century, unfortunately. Yup. And where was her faith in G-d to accept what happened when she found out she'd been robbed. Then strongly criticizing her young nun apprentice for trying to save the robbers from searching her for the money. Which they would have gotten in a disrespectful manner. Always a good lesson from these episodes. We need to look ourselves for how to be better before tearing someone else down.

In CZ we have a saying: "in return for goodness, there is poverty," and this episode illustrates that well. They helped a man who rob them and killed a man, only to rob them again, and kill a woman. On the other hand, had they not helped him, they might have never recovered the money. Maybe we should start saying "in return for goodness, there is poverty; but in return for evil, there is DEATH."

Will never understand how pecking on s.o., humiliating and abusing a person should make her/him a better personn or were something God wanted us to do. My Mum spent time in a nuns' school as a child and had a dose of that kind of thinking. They left her with pulmonia to "teach her not to ly" - unfortunately she was one of the sort that do not develop high temperature so no one beliefed. Ages after on an x-ray a doc found the scars on her lungs. She could have died as a child due to that cruel idea of forming a person to "God's will".
