Re: Cookie - so sorry he didn't make it but just wanted to reassure watchers that it's pretty rare for that to happen. I've run a sanctuary for little ones for more than 20 years - rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, chinchillas, mice, hamsters, rats etc. We've had many undergo anaesthetic (for neutering & other reasons) & we've NEVER lost one. Neutering rabbits is vital (unneutered female rabbits have a more than 60% chance of uterine cancer & pyometra is common in all unspeyed female mammals) so please don't let Cookie's passing put you off. Make sure you get an exotics specialist vet who regularly treats rabbits (RWAF website has a list) not a general vet. Sadly lionheads & other flat faced breeds usually require dental work at some point & will need anaesthetic so make sure you have a rabbit savvy vet near to you before you adopt a bun. Please don't let little Cookie's passing put you off getting vital treatment for your little furry friends, cancer or pyometra is a way worse ending than poor Cookie had. We've had buns live to 13 & older partly because they were neutered. It's the best thing you can do for them.

I wish I knew this information when I rescued EB X I just had to get him out of the situation he was in, he was thin, filthy and had a body score of 2 so we worked really hard to get him where he is now X he couldn't be neutered because he struggled with the anaesthetic, but luckily he was bought out of it X Never had any issues since though X

I am SO glad you added this. I adopted my little guy and I need to get him neutered. This came up in my recommended and is the second rabbit surgery vid I’ve seen today. Neither rabbit in either vid made it so I was starting to get VERY nervous. More than I already was.
@jamieandrew-kromer80084 жыл бұрын
I’ve had many bunnies over the years. Males can be very rambunctious. Since this little guy was just dropped off in a box he could have been any age and he was possibly just to old to handle the stress and the anesthesia.
@nirvanasanctuary76914 жыл бұрын
@@torioakley6000 it's ok to be worried about your friend, shows you care :) Have a chat with your vet for reassurance - most exotics vets have done thousands of rabbit neuters & often many on even smaller/more fragile critters like chinchillas, guinea pigs & degus. That & dental operations are their bread & butter. Most haven't lost very many over the years. A successful neuter isn't as TV worthy as a heartbreaking loss so that's why you're seeing them. They don't show the thousands of routine cases. Your bun will be very sexually frustrated, possibly aggressive & will destructive if you don't neuter & it's very, very hard to bond an unneutered male with another rabbit & that's without thinking of the 168 babies a year they can churn out! It's really the best option - good luck with it :)
@nirvanasanctuary76914 жыл бұрын
@@jamieandrew-kromer8008 Absolutely, the vets did everything possible but sometimes it can be an underlying condition or allergy that no one was aware of & it can happen to any animal including us. Anesthesiologists are supremely skilled people doing a very difficult job, it must be a terrible weight to lose a patient. Our vet does blood work before anesthetic to determine if they're fit for the op & heart/lung checks also. They do everything they can to ensure it's safe but in a tiny percent of cases it goes wrong.

@@ihave2channelsfollowmyothe578 Unfortunately, anaesthesia can kill some animals, even us humans. Why we have to sign a form acknowledging this before we have an op. Whenever I've had to get a cat neutered or spayed, I've had to sign an anaesthesia form for them and it states very clearly the risks. As for this sad episode, you do not know if an anaesthesia test was carried out prior or not. I'm just concerned how long that partnership will last, to be honest. We say to people in their 50, they are irresponsible to have babies. And kinda goes for getting pets when you are so old that they might outlive you. I don't mean to be mean here. It's a fucking fair thing to get old. Or deep depression or whatever. But if you find it hard to keep yourself tiptop, having additional responsibility is probably not the best. I do think that home visits to the elderly could REALLY benefit from having a dog come along. My grandma was in an old persons home and they had people come with their dogs quite often. ALWAYS a hit. This was a place for alzheimers and dementia. They would take pictures of the people living there with the dogs and so they could relive it and remember. So I understand what good a dog can do. I love dogs. At that age though, I feel having someone offer a service to come visit people with a dog is a better option. Cos realistically this dog can end up homeless yet again is a year or two. Same goes with people with disability or depression or something. The joy of dog is so real, but I think we should also think of the dog. It takes a very strong person to repeatedly adopt old dying dogs. But we are kinda forcing that on a dog.
@anyjen3 жыл бұрын
@@jenat82 considering how many dogs die alone and unadopted in shelters, even a couple of years in the home of a person who will adore it will make a huge difference in the life of that dog. And it's unfair to say an older person can't have the full-time company of that dog just because they might die before the dog. You can't know that; she might live ten or more years yet, and in fact she might live longer just for having that pupper in her life. Depression and loneliness are huge issues for elderly people that can effectively shorten their lives, because it may cause them to neglect their own care or actively work against it.
@jenat823 жыл бұрын
@@anyjen that's a problem too. But i hope you do realise there are many dogs that don't get a home cos of dog aggression. Not really the dogs fault. Nor can you blame people for not taking that on. Especially if they have children.

RIP Cookie 🍪 the tears are falling. It just reminds me of when my rabbit went into GI status and almost died. I was told I needed to put her down. However she perked up and is still here thankfully. I’m going to go cuddle her now. Life is too short.

Now these guys are absolutely great vets! When the rabbit passed, both the doctor and and his assistant were fighting back tears. The vet only met him once for a few minutes and it absolutely crushed him when he didn't make it! Had that been a vet here in the states, most of them wouldn't have batted an eye! These vets are exactly the way vets should be, I really hate the the way vets can seem so cold and I know they trained that way but still. Pets for most people are as important as a child to them and the coldness can make a bad diagnosis that much worse!

@@DM-ql6ps Snakes too make great pets for people with allergies. Cornsnakes are very friendly. As you probably know already, my advice to anyone considering getting a reptile for a pet is to do lots of research first and never be afraid to ask more knowledgeable people questions. what i really love- they just see the save place for an animal not the age of the new owner- in germany lots of elderly get rejected when applying for a dog or a cat because of their age- but i think especially for elderlys who are alone an animal companion can be a great life addition and very helpful

But the thing is, you need to be able to provide for them and also have the proper documents and so on for that. Unless they have an ally that would be ready to sign a contract for the shelter that theyre willing to take the dog on 3x-5x a walk a day its gonna be hard to provide for them.

My Nana is getting a new dog. She's just gone 80 but luckily has the money to be able to pay for a walker. Recently, her old dog Reese (dachshund x poodle) had tumours due to Cushing's so she had to put him down. What the shelter wants to know is if someone will look after the dog after she dies.
