Poor big lad was probably dyin' hot underneath all that wool- I'll never understand why people think shearing sheep is abuse. Bless you guys for helping all these animals! 💚
@jaykneegarner24794 жыл бұрын
I don’t thing the sheering is the issue but rather the way they are handled during sheering. Most people see the sheep’s body being contorted, pushed and pulled on. When it really doesn’t hurt them at all. It doesn’t help when a lot of sheep shearers is that they tend to rush and grab skin as a result. This sheep is a prime example of rushing the job! If the sheerer has slowed down than Ben would not have nearly the number of nicks on his body! Even with that amount of wool that many nicks and cuts is not acceptable!
@prcervi4 жыл бұрын
@@jaykneegarner2479 if he'd slowed down Ben was at greater risk of giving himself a heart attack from stress and as they said in the episode, the weight of the wool was pulling the skin and making the nicks happen far more frequently then on a sheep that's been regularly sheered, dude doing the sheering was doing impressive work on not cutting up Ben a ton while trying to efficiently get rid of 50ish pounds of overgrown wool. also Ben still had his gonads, boy has way more testosterone and subsequently higher stress base level, his baseline was an unsafe level to begin with.
@treeoflife914 жыл бұрын
Right? It's such a juvenile thing to think, they seem to think that everything that involves a sharp instrument and an animal is automatically evil. Even if it does hurt a bit and gives a few nicks, it's still worth doing if it makes the animal happier, healthier and more comfortable in the long run! Would sure be fun to see these people never cutting their hair, taking their clothes off or showering and carrying a massive backpack 24/7 to see how fun it is. 🙄
@litchtheshinigami89364 жыл бұрын
Same for cows.. alot of these animals do best at lower temperatures shaving them is actually helping them as opposed to hurting them wich most people might think they often go aww isn’t that like sad they’ll be cold.. they won’t be cold.. it’s completely fine for them.. though i’m guessing for sheep they might mean the way they are shaved as opposed to the shaving it’self.. for a cow you just shave them upright wich unless they haven’t had it done before they won’t really mind..
@Joghurt24994 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is more the problem existing. Same with cow's milk. Yes, they need to be milked and they probably like it, but the problem with these animals is them existing and producing excessive amounts of milk basically by our design, having calves regularly and having them taken away only so we can drink milk. Wild sheep do not grow that much wool because it is obviously absolutely useless and dangerous if they have noone harvesting the wool. It's more of a Stockholm syndrome thing where they just can't exist without us. Hell, modern milk cattle in the west can't even be outside year round because they can't deal with cold, wet weather and non-ideal, muddy meadows! Their legs are too fragile to deal with it! I drink milk and wear wool and leather so I am not saying that having cattle and using it is bad in and by itself. That is just the world we live in.

I’ll still never understand the “danger” of sheep shearing, from what I’ve heard from sheep farmers is that REAL wild sheep could shed off there wool but as sheep where brought into captivity and bred to have wool for clothing, etc, etc that they now can’t shed off there wool so it’s up to farmers to shear them to keep them safe. Image how hot that is and wool is super heavy, I’ll never understand how it’s dangerous to shear them vs not shearing them ever
@yes2day1004 жыл бұрын
The explanation was that it stresses them out because of being held in prey positions and manipulated around and it releases the adrenalin they would have if attacked by a predator. If the sheep had it done regularly, it would obviously get used to it. But this particular sheep hadn't been sheered in at least 4 or 5 years.

I just want to say: I hear so many people talk about how “it’s cruel to shear sheep” and I just want to talk about this. Sheep have been bred to develop wool at a fast rate, and like Ben of left untreated can lead to these problems. Shearing them is a blessing to sheep, not shearing them and having them grow and grow and grow so much wool can severely hurt the sheep and can cause them to get a heat stroke and die. And if leaving them grow like they said in the video it can pull that skin so when it’s finally sheared that sheep is gonna get cuts. Sheep shears are made to keep the sheep from harms way, and many sheep farmers never try to cut the sheep, if they wanted too they would have to do some whack thing to get the shears to do that. I hate they use stuff like Ben to show how “it’s cruel” when Ben being left cut up a bit with sore skin is the product of *not* shearing sheep. I’m very frustrated as I hear this all the time when it comes to wool. Shearing sheep is a blessing, not cruel in the least bit. What would make it cruel is the individual shearing the sheep and not the general act is shearing.

25:29. If this is the Sydney funnel web spider its the 8th deadliest spider in the world. The Brazilian Wandering spider is the deadliest in the world. Here in the US we have the brown recluse spider (among others)which is #4. I’ve seen what it can do. A friend had a bite on her ankle. The doctor treated it as a regular spider bite. When I saw the bite I told her it was a poisonous bite and she needed to go to the hospital. She got treated but it got real infected and her foot got really swollen, mainly because the first doctor had not treated it correctly.. The puncture site grew to about 1 1/2 inch. It was gross. So if you get a bite from any spider and the area swells and gets red get to the doctor ASAP.

Ok, I did some more research. Some articles state both the Brazilian Wandering Spider and the Sydney funnel web spider tie for first place. They didn’t go into the criteria they used but I’m guessing it must be how many bites per year, the intensity of the bites, damage done by the venom, deaths, etc. Tim would be familiar with that data.

There is not really a treatment for brown recluse bites. Keep the wound clean, apply antibiotic ointment and watch for signs of infection. Most bites can be treated at home. They are rarely lethal. Sometimes tissue destruction can occur, but all you can do is debride it (remove dead tissue) and treat with antibiotics for any secondary infection.

watching how funnel web spiders are caught and milked to make antivenin was amazing! I appreciate there's no 'shocking' music like I'd expect in an American show and how the spiders are presented like any other animal. and what a cool job to milk them with people watching and learning to *respect* these animals instead of just plainly fearing them.

My cat suffered a fracture just like this. Instead of pinning it, the surgeon removed the head of the femur and smoothed the bone end. A pad of scar tissue and muscle functions as a pseudo joint. He healed quickly and it’s like it never happened. He won’t have arthritis at the old fracture either.
@81dawgfr3 жыл бұрын
I think they have to consider the size of the animal & the strain on the "joint" and muscles as the animal ages. A cat is much smaller than a Pittie and the movement of a cat vs a dog is quite different. I would also imagine it would depend on the age of the animal when it happened not to mention the fact that although the breaks were similar, the breaks could have been very different whichh would drive the treatment (not to mention the fact that treatments improve so quickly that the treatment when your cat had its surgery may have been the standard of care, but the Pittie's surgery may have had new developments that made the care the Pittie received the new standard of care. Unless you know all the facts of the case and why the treatment path was taken, you shouldn't attempt to second guess the treatment of a professional.

Oddball is a fun movie. I have it on DVD and enjoy rewatching it. FYI- shearing generally only takes a few minutes. A good shearer keeps them relaxed and prides themselves on not cutting them. Afterwards it is a relief for the sheep to be free of the wool.
@windwoman35494 жыл бұрын
Chris explained why poor Ben ended up with all those cuts & it wasn’t because the shearer was bad at his job! More an unfortunate side effect of how his skin was stretched by the weight of 5 years worth of wool.
@DemonRose694 жыл бұрын
They explained why he had all the cuts. Don't down the man at his job because it didn't live up to your expectations. Ms. Know it all. Ben had five years worth of matted wool pulling and tearing at his skin and it was not an easy task to shear all of that heavy wool off of his body. There is just no pleasing some people sometimes.
@shepherd44064 жыл бұрын
Mчѕtíc Rσѕє Please read my earlier reply. I very much respect Chris, the shearer and all those at the rescue. Having had sheep, I certainly understand the difficulty of the circumstances. I just wanted to defend the practice of shearing and shearers. There are many good shearers who like sheep and take pride in their vocation. Sorry there was a misunderstanding.

Hopefully you will give a small presentation of how the venom is used to produce antivenom. Pls!
@prcervi4 жыл бұрын
another channel, Snake Discovery, did a video of their visit to a venom production lab where they also mention how the process works(not shown in that video, but mentioned that it would be sent off to another facility where they would inject amounts into horses, collect the antibodies, and process those into antivenom) and also start giving a clue as to why so much venom needs to be harvested just to make one dose of antivenom(it's shipped out to the other lab in a powder form)
