Rottweilers & maremma are my favourite breeds. I have a almost 2 year old maremma and he still comes inside every night and tries to sleep on the bed. Them being “ uncaring “ of their owner isnt true mine guards me from things I didn’t even know where threats when I try to sleep lol 😂

This is absolutely not a dog for apartment. It need open spaces. Was selected to be very sweet with owners and other farm animals, but aggressive with strangers and wild animals. The good maremmano abbruzzese loss is aggressivity when it go far from this territory. The best natural dog.

What an amazing breed of dog. Not quite sure why uk farmers are not using these. There has been so many deaths of sheep 🐑 from dogs especially this time of yr. maybe people would keep their dogs under control a bit more

Would 3 acres of land be enough room for one Maremma? Would a 4ft 9g chain link fence keep a Maremma in? We have a small herd of goats and there are coyotes in the area.

Depends. I have 4.5 acres but the poultry and my maremma dog have only about 3.5 fenced acres. This is pretty small for him to patrol. He makes up for it by "guarding" the properties in front and to the side as well as mine. He is very vigilant, but also smart. He knows who belongs at the neighbors' places and does not bark at them, but when anybody strange comes around he barks. So he seems to think that the neighbors' properties (as well as their kids) also is his responsibility, and this does give him enough to keep an eye on. He scared off burglars that had broken into a neighbor's house while he was working midnights. As for the fence, some of mine is only 4 feet and he does not try to get out. I believe if they are happy and occupied taking care of their territory and flock (of whatever, ducks, goats, ?) they are not interested in getting out. If you have coyotes, you need a guard dog. Be warned though, that they do not fully mature until 18 to 24 months; you can't expect a younger one to be a reliable guardian. Get some info from whoever you buy from about how to train your pup. Best wishes!

My maremma is not and has never attempted to jump our 4.5 ft fence. He is respectful of boundaries... might just be his sweetheart of a personality though

Cuddling pups and stroking affectionate adult dogs shows you are not conditioning them well. Their bond to the sheep should be stronger than the bond to man. As soon as they are weaned place them with the sheep and just ignore them. Their working instinct (protective, attentive, trustworthy) clicks into place automatically. Feed them where the sheep are. From then on they must never be separated from the flock they are to protect, day and night, good or bad weather, hot to cold, for the rest of their lives. Each flock should be guarded by a team of three or four adults comprising one female. If the flock is sold its own Maremmas go with it.

You said the breed originated hundreds of years ago in Italy, but three minutes prior to that you said that the breed originated in ancient Rome and even talked about Roman art depictions of the dog... A little editing goes a long way in a finished, refined, professional product. how much does a puppy cost?
