Bones of new dinosaur species discovered in Missouri

This is a massive find. Considering Missouri was part of the Internal Sea during the Mesozoic. To find fossils from that time is incredibly rare in the Mid West.

It was but very little of the western interior seaway was in Missouri during the cretaceous period. It’s possible mosasaurs and turtles like Archelon could be out in the western half. The eastern half of Missouri was most likely part of Appalachia. I would not doubt it one bit that we could find dinosaurs like Appalachiasaurus and Dryptosaurus. Nodosaurs were also present and obviously hadrosaurs. Not a lot of ceratopsians. If they were. They were very small unlike their cousins in the western half of laramidia. That’s were most of the giant dinosaurs were during the final stages of the Mesozoic era.

1942, Daniel R. Stewart, a geologist with the Missouri Geological Survey He is recognized as the first to discover dinosaur bones in MO. I believe the the reporter said “The first ever Dino bone found in MO” Apparently even local news reporters can’t be bothered with doing any real research before doing a report.

I can believe it. Many Christian conservatives are not the brightest people. Hell, they tend to be the reason why the pandemic has continued this long and are the people who believe in a flat earth and young earth creationism propaganda…and on and on. Some people just don’t get the context. From an economic standpoint, the tourism it’ll bring in is great for the small businesses, so if they’re smart, they’ll be educating themselves at least a little to tell people who come looking for the museum it’s in. To some people, it’s neat, just not relevant to them. To people like us, it’s a monumental discovery, but to those whom paleontology isn’t there Thing, it don’t make them backwards. Some people, yes, but not all.

Not a lot is known about eastern US dinosaurs- was its own island-continent during the Cretaceous- so this is indeed a big find!

We know there were dinosaurs in Appalachia (the eastern part). There are just no deserts or similar terrain to expose the bones.

@@robertlackey5845 yes, we know there were dinosaurs, but we don't know as much about them. however given Appalachia was an isolated, relatively flat island continent while topographically diverse Laramidia frequently was connected with Asia, it's possible there was just a lower diversity compared to Laramidia- cf Australia vs Eurasian mammals today

It isn’t secret because they don’t want people to help, it’s to protect it from the people who would go in, steal the bones, destroying valuable smaller context Fossils along the way, and sell them for extravagant profit.

No, it could not have been a snake, nothing about a archosaurian dinosaur skull resembles the incredibly derived lepidosaurian skulls of snakes except for them both being diapsids. Anyone with a simple understanding of basic reptile anatomy could show you're wrong.
