Jordan Payne yeah, so techies (gamers and coders especially) are kinda known for smoking weed. I seriously doubt the sponsors are unaware of this lol. seriously the NSA & FBI cite drug testing as a primary problem in reference to recruiting computer related candidates.
@bmxriderforlife12347 жыл бұрын
uhm not true, lots of fbi people used to be ex druggies. sorry but i think youre thinking the airforce with lsd, if youve taken lsd at any point in your life you can legally not ever fly a plane. as long as you admit past drug use the FBI doesnt care, for current drug use however they do care. lying about past drug use will disqualify you however telling them about past drug use will not. you cant have used weed within 3 years and other illegal substances within 10 of your application. other then that youre good to go on past drug usage.
@bmxriderforlife12347 жыл бұрын
nope for certain jobs within the airforce they do a more thorough form of drug testing. also its been proven that lsd usage and high altitudes can lead to flashbacks and cause accidents. obviously the airforce does more then fly planes however what is the main purpose of the airforce. flying fucking planes and training people to be able to fly them repair them and do all the traffic control shit amongst other things required in the aviation industry. also lsd often doesnt show up in regular piss tests hence why lsd has its own testing procedures done. and nope as there are literally loads of people who have done drugs that now work for the fbi. it may be competitive but not in that way. people party. people have fun. that doesnt mean shit. and btw it says right on their own site that past drug usage literally as i described it 3 years for weed and 10 for everything else, and they dont give a fuck. dont believe me go look at the site yourself.

Kissanime and other completely free sites are so much better than Crunchyroll, unless you've got lots of money to chuck away simply for a few more miscellaneous functions.
@dead_p1xl9648 жыл бұрын
absolute madman Most free anime sites operate in a grey area of legality. They use fansubbed anime, which is also still usually very high quality, so it's technically a transformation of the original and not just sharing a duplicated copyrighted work. You get even more legal leeway when you consider that some shows don't get subbed in English for months after the episode airs or even until the DVD releases. Many of these sites have the policy that they take down their copies of the videos as soon as the publisher releases a subbed copy. That way these other sites help those of us who want to watch it on the release day quite a bit, without digging into the publisher's profits. The only one to blame for this system existing is the Japanese publishers who for over 10 years outright refused to do subs at airtime or even allow bigger publishers like Funimation, Aniplex, or Noitamina to do the subs right away. They tried to use it to drive DVD sales months later, but the internet made that backfire pretty badly, and a HUGE fansub scene was born of people who didn't want to wait to watch more of their favorite shows. Crunchyroll is skeezy. They take pre-made subs licensed from the publishers (some of which are also pretty bad), post them on the site, and then charge you to watch them - but only if you want to watch them when they're released. They make bank because they worked out some deal with the publishers to pay far less in royalties than they should, and then act like they're providing you some great service by sharing other people's videos. I also find their show selection to be kind of shit, and if you want to get into the more indie shows or older titles, you're better going just about anywhere else. FWIW, Crunchyroll charges you more than NKK charges people for their TV service *in Japan* and has a small fraction of the interesting content.

Linus can you revisit this now. I think yall can build a new crazy bong that would smoke this one.
@jblackops998 жыл бұрын
+LinusTechTips For the automatic refilling that would be fairly easy because just like when you flush a toilet and the tank refills or a swamp cooler you would just need a valve with a float on it then some type of source for your cooling liquid. then find a way to add a hole on the side of the ice chest and pick a level you want to keep the cooling liquid and boom you are set. once it gets low enough it will start activating the valve to refill what is needed.
@modal_derp8 жыл бұрын
and then you do what linus did, your PC is in a room next to yours, that room has the bong semi isolated from your PC and servers, so it won't be too moist. And you sit in your room running thunderbolt hubs for you displays and peripherals in that room.

If your arm is out the window you still don't get colder than ambient air. Wind chill does not affect static items, increased fluid flow (air flow) only affect rate of change by constantly giving the heat exchanger lower temperature air by moving the heated air away quickly.
@pr0xZen8 жыл бұрын
Your body temperature norm is still roughly 37'C, and the rapid heat transfer off your skin is going to register on your nerves as freezing. Going by this example, we can't exclude the fact that we're dealing with nerve signals and human perception here, just as much as actual heat transfer.

You could very easily solve the water level problem in one of two ways. 1. Toilet cistern valve connected to home water supply (runs risk of breaking and flooding) 2. PVC cement in a shoulder fitting to the reservoir so you can easily monitor the level to top it up when necessary, and make it a routine thing to check the way you'd check your car's oil. Also with appropriate planning and a sufficiently-powerful pump you could easily route your tubing to an outside area like your balcony or the like to have all the noise and humidity-supplementation outside.

The water top off set up that you spoke of can be easily achieved with a direct water line, like that used to supply an ice maker, and a toilet valve. Simply attach the water line to the valve, mount the valve, and adjust your water level. Something else to consider is placing it in the basement and running the two cooling lines up to the PC, provided the PC is not in the Attic, second floor or some where else. The only bad thing about hooking this into the City Water system is you have to use City Water, which is the worse ever to use in water cooling. City, or Tap, water will clog your copper parts in time. They have a few inline filters that can remove some of the contaminants, but unless you plan on hooking this to a Reverse Osmosis system, clogging will ensue. It might take years, but it will happen unlike using distilled water.

One more thing you could try to increase your performance is add some packing to the towers. Industrial towers use ceramic rings or saddles but even glass marbles or beads would work. The idea is that you increase the residence time of the liquid in the tower by giving it something it has to flow around rather than just allowing it to fall straight back into your reservoir.

You've made a swamp cooler. We use them all over AZ, but I doubt one would be effective anywhere outside a desert as even here they become useless during monsoon season, when the (non rainy day) humidity might get all the way up to a sticky 20%. Also, shower heads are not optimal at all. There are misters sold just for this purpose that would have much lower water flow than shower heads and much, much better atomization.

Use this in conjunction with a dehumidifier do drop the humidity level of the room and use the captured water to put back into the bong cooler. You could do this in another room close to your computer to cut down noise and to control the environment better. I like this!

I built one of those ~20 years ago from time of this comment. The sound of the falling water is easily tuned by several methods. One can install screens in the vertical section(a bit of experimentation is nec. to achieve both desired sound dampening while maintaining cooling effect), apply Dynamat or similar to outer surface of vertical surface, and/or experiment with flow rates and shower heads. In 2001 I achieved a stable overclock of 666 Hz on a Socket A Thunderbird processor, or 1666 GHz on a 1GHz processor using my evaporative cooler and a CPU with hand-picked binning. I have about a decade of experience with evap. coolers. They needn't be loud nor unsightly to work effectively. I worked the thermodynamics out using MathCad. It's pretty standard stuff for an engineer.

This is quite uncanny actually, I would have never thought about using this process to cool a CPU! I am a power engineer (I work in large plants such as gas processing complexes or hydro facilities) and in school we cover thermodynamics theory and practice extensively, and Linus I'd just like to say you did an excellent job summarizing sensible heat removal process using the removal of latent heat in a cooling tower! we use a nearly identical process in industry! and for any disbelievers (not that I can imagine there would be any) this theory is used by nearly all large plants for their cooling water, the cooling tower in most plants can cool water to around 13*C - 15*C on a 20*C day where the water coming from equipment can easily exceed 45*C. It works extremely well when setup correctly.

I would place the fans on the top portion on the cooling tower pulling air out and plumb the water spraying down as you did and vent somewhere on the sides so air can flow from the bottom and you would create a more effective heat exchange, but keep in mind that you will need to treat the water to avoid legion air disease. I would add speed control for the fans based on wet bulb but now that would be more complicated. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like this might be an interesting option for Corporate Solutions. Kinda like the whole room watercooling loop.

Would love to see a build with a Peltier heat exchange for another try at keeping a cpu sub-ambient, though I wouldn't know where to find a higher wattage version. I know you guys could figure it out. Love these types of videos though keep it up.

I didn't knew that Linus knows so much about thermodynamics. XD BTW a very good project to build. I will definitely try to build one, but a much smaller one.

This (as Linus said) would work really well for me in the winter. I normally keep a humidifier running along side my space heater. This keeps the room from becoming too dry from the dry cold air and then drying it out further with the hot coils of the heater. I wouldnt use tap water. Maybe distilled & filtered with a anti-fungal agent to keep yuck from building up on all the parts.

Linus, you never clearly answered your own question about windchill. However, I'm pretty sure the explanation is this: Just as temperature increases with pressure increase, temperature decreases when pressure lowers. This connects to windchill through the Bernoulli principle; faster moving air has a lower working pressure than stagnant air in the same area. When driving, the air displaced by the car goes faster and decreases in pressure, resulting in windchill. When the wind blows, it's the same idea. Or it could be your implied explanation, that energy is transfered from the moving air into the water on your skin, breaking the bonds of the water and making the air colder as a result of energy transfer.

You could use a simpe mechanism from a toilet, which uses a float to controll a valve. Hook that up to your house plumping (which is pressurised), and you'll never have to look at it again. Simple plumbing, no electronics involved.

wow!! as a chemical engineer I can tell you that I'm really impressed with this build... if you wish to improve the cooling capabilities of your tower, try to pack it with some material that increases the contact area of the cold air and hot water :)

Could I get a little more info about what you mean? What material would help with this?

3:42 One small point. The ice cubes inside water in the glass shouldn't take any more space than they already had after they melt.

Actually, theoretically, you can get a little bit bellow room temperature with just fans. The faster the air moves, the lower the pressure. The lower the pressure, the lower the temperature (unless you add some more heat of course). Basically, the faster the air moves, the colder it is (although the effect is pretty negligible).
